notaromantic Posted February 19, 2015 Posted February 19, 2015 (edited) How about the Beverly Hills Hotel: Its an Art-Deco pink monstrosity. By golly, it'll satisfy us all. Actually, I thought about building it once, and even searched for parts before getting caught up in something else. Nonetheless, its a great building that really couldn't be in any other color scheme than the one its in. Someone should do it in Lego... There are some nice mint-greens in there too, that you can't really discern in this photograph. Edited February 19, 2015 by notaromantic Quote
Rob1321 Posted February 19, 2015 Posted February 19, 2015 What exactly does "modular" mean? Will lego ever release a modular stand alone building? Like a gas station or something? I would like an advanced build but not something that has to be attached to another building. Sorry if OT. Quote
Blakstone Posted February 19, 2015 Posted February 19, 2015 What exactly does "modular" mean? Will lego ever release a modular stand alone building? Like a gas station or something? I would like an advanced build but not something that has to be attached to another building. Sorry if OT. There are a couple of definitions for modular that LEGO uses. All the many of the Pirates sets are considered modular because they are made to connect to each other without modifications. However when we talk about Modulars, there seems to be a much more specific requirements. The sidewalks and pins line up so that for nine sets, you can put them into any order and the buildings flow into each other. There is much love for the Victorian Haunted House. It matched the size and detail of this line, but since it did not connect, it wasn't a Modular. I think LEGO might make a gas station that is in the same scale as the Modular line but that would not be enough for me to call it a Modular. Quote
Herky Posted February 20, 2015 Posted February 20, 2015 (edited) Oh right, yes Im an idiot.... As you were... Though Art Nouveau would be great. Kitty, despite OTW's silliness, he actually would go for an Art Nouveau building, as would I. You just have to remember we are never to be taken seriously, just sometimes poke fun at things. I took a look at the new sets that are coming and if there was a way to make the Friends hotel in a cool manner, I do not see why it wouldn't sell as a modular. Same with the Scooby Doo mansion. The main point OTW and many others of us have made and will continue to make is that the Modular series with its price point and piece count as an expert is traditionally thought of as an AFOL build. The problem then becomes that we get kiddie oriented stories to go with them to put whimsy into the creation, something that for us, being more serious about the hobby, find a bit deplorable. I want cool buildings...and while the last 2 offerings could be considered good to some, there are those of us who do not need the silliness that accompanied the PR and now DO from the story and whimsy point of view. I could care less what color you give me, look at the nice places in Miami that are Art Deco and such with the colors, but don't give me an AFOL build aimed at a 9 year old. I guess it could really be me, I need to adjust my outlook as maybe 9 year olds is really the target audience, but the line was never designed or considered for anything but AFOL when it started with Market Street. That guy who created it did so for the adult audience. To that end, I have come to the conclusion to purchase what I want and like, and stop being a completest in any line. As to what is a modular, I would consider them to be the creator line of buildings that do connect, hit the 1000+ piece count and started with Market Street through the current Detective Office building. Hope you all have a great day! PS, here is a link to an article that I saw today: http://www.popsugar.com/moms/Best-New-Lego-Sets-2015-36885531?stream_view=1#photo-36885534 Interesting choices. K4kitty Posted February 21, 2015 Posted February 21, 2015 :) not to worry, just feeling a wee bit foolish ;) I was thinking more of using some of the new parts from the elves sets to make an art nouveau modular I agree though with regard to the modulars getting perhaps a little "whimsical", I intend to get at least two DOs and modify them quite a bit... Off the wall Posted February 21, 2015 Posted February 21, 2015 (edited) I'm currently working on a mod of the apartment side of PS. The primary colors are the light yellow bricks you see in GE and the sand green from the Haunted House. The green is the primary color. I got two HHs just for the green bricks. The mod has bay windows on both sides of the front door. So, it's going to be about 40% wider than the original PS apartment. I also have an extra Brandenburg Gate set from the Archetecture series that I will use as a source of trim/detail pieces as it contains a lot of sand green pieces. We'll see how this works out. I'm building a residential street based on the PS. Three buildings are done, two are the PS version and one is the PS version done in sand blue. The fourth is the sand green one that's a work in progress. I want upwards of eight residential buildings, most on a 16 width plate, when I finish. Thankfuly the hinge plates required for the bay windows were available in both gray and yellow on eBay in large quantities for a reasonable price. Plus, the shipper had free shipping and I received the parts in 3 days. Now, I know, I need to get around to the Flickr account......... Edited February 21, 2015 by Off the wall Quote
Boettner Builds Posted February 21, 2015 Posted February 21, 2015 Yes, the Flickr account! I would LOVE to see pictures of your street!! Quote
Faefrost Posted February 26, 2015 Posted February 26, 2015 Congrats. What did the price on the BLinked GG work out to if you don't mind my asking? Also believe it or not the Bricklinking gets easier if instead of doing it for the retired sets you opt for something like third part instructions such as those from Brickcitydepot Depot or our own Krystal. I particularly like the Pharmacy that the BCD guys published in their Lego Neighborhood Book. Of Krystal's stuff it does not get much better than her Tan Townhouse. You will find you are not hunting down quite so many rare and expensive parts. And not meaning to quote myself, I just placed the last part orders for the Corner Drugstore from the No Starch Press "the Lego Neighborhood Book". I will post pics when I get it all in and assembled. Quote
snaillad Posted February 26, 2015 Posted February 26, 2015 The new fence pieces from the elves theme are very art nouveau, I hope to get some myself later this year. Art nouveau is a fantastic style but it tends to be quite organic and lots of round and intricate detail, in particular some cast iron examples. I'm sure the Lego team could make some great architectural prototypes but making them stable for play is another problem. Whatever they come with next I would at hope for rounded clear window inserts and different design for the roof to what we have just seen which was very flat. Quote

I'm wondering if they would use this new piece in an official modular building? Although, if it's found in 3 Elves sets they might not want to use it in another theme, at least very soon. It would be nice if they introduced a new color like a sand orange to represent a reddish standstone. Quote
VintageLegoEra Posted February 28, 2015 Posted February 28, 2015 Next modular must be a Hospital Quote
Humdrum Posted February 28, 2015 Posted February 28, 2015 I still want my trampoline store! Back to serious spitballin': how about a structure to tie all the modulars together? A modular grade town square/ esplanade/avenue/... Or perhaps other spacious element which fit in any town: a zoo, a park... Quote
Off the wall Posted February 28, 2015 Posted February 28, 2015 I'm to the point with modulars where my main concern is subject matter. For that reason, I would like to see one building devoted to one theme. Museum, school, library, hospital.....all fine with me. Once TLG gives me the template, I can modify it to make it suit my city. Story line, playabilty.....TLG, knock yourself out.....I've learned from the last two modulars that I can turn whatever you make into something I want. Quote

Funny coincidence, last week I received my copy of this book: And the central idea behind it is exactly what you're describing. In this book they show you how to build one 'template building', then you get to choose how to make it fit in any theme you like. Edited February 28, 2015 by Humdrum Quote
Boettner Builds Posted February 28, 2015 Posted February 28, 2015 a little off topic: I LOVE the new art nouveau elves fences!!! Also does anyone know if the above book has instructions for the Victorian house? Quote
K4kitty Posted February 28, 2015 Posted February 28, 2015 Yes the elves sets have much potential for an art nouveau modular (though I don't have the skills!) Quote
K4kitty Posted February 28, 2015 Posted February 28, 2015 On a different note, I've ordered the PR this month :) Quote

I'm afraid not :( *edit* unless you're talking about the canal ring house on the left side of the cover (second from the left), in which case it does have instructions. K4kitty Posted March 1, 2015 Posted March 1, 2015 Just been looking at art nouveau architecture, it's going to take someone with far more skills than I to incorporate all the curves! Quote
