Seeing how small the DO is I've been having to buy more than one modular in order to get a full sized building. I've been building my own modulars now since its so much cheaper to build your own. I'm really not liking the direction Lego is going with the Modular line. The cookie caper was cute but it is really hard to figure out if someone doesn't explain it to you in a video. The story telling is starting to bother me, it just feels unnecessary. What's next an exploding modular for more playability? But I've discovered the joy of building my own modular and also the joy of Bricklink.

I have not yet bought the DO, but hope to get it within a month or two. Due to limited funds, the plan will be to probably stick with just the one and like you, focus on creating my own modulars in the future (after bricklinking a Green Grocer is completed). I will continue to buy the official Lego release as long as they do not become overglorified City structures with play features, cookie crimes, and who knows what else. Hopefully, Lego will realize that even though having AFOLs as your target audience is more the exception than the rule, the modular line certainly fits as the exception. If kids want play features, they have City, Chima, Ninjago, Star Wars, and basically 90% or more of Lego products dedicated to their desires.

It does seem difficult to get started into the Modulars now since so many have been discontinued since the inception. I couldn't imagine backtracking that much.

I guess LEGO will always have to keep sets current that resemble a city (preferably without play features).

Yep, I'm quite happy that I started two years ago and was still able to get all but the first three at MSRP (actually, I got most of them cheaper as I bought when they were on offer or during double VIP time). I only had to bricklink Cafe Corner and Green Grocer (just don't care for Market Street), which actually was a fun experience.

Here. Here. **The sound of glasses being raised**

I think of it in terms of the psychological concept of "Flow", in which one's skill level is taken in relation to the task before them. If the task is beyond one's skill level, the result is an experience of frustration, and therefore we must increase our skills, or else abandon the task. But if one's skill level is, or has become, adept to their task, they experience elation, as in being "in the zone" = Flow. However, if our skill level has surpassed the task before us, we experience boredom, and therefore must increase the demands of our task... Like a stairway that one can either ascend or descend.

Now, LEGO is not exactly a toy - it is a task, and one that requires skill.

So, I think, really, LEGO has been what it always has been. And LEGO will continue to be what they always have been. It is "we", the AFOL community at-large, who have in many ways, surpassed with our own skills, those "official" tasks before us and are faced now with having to find ways in which to challenge ourselves.

I've decided to skip some of these new releases that I'm not thoroughly interested in (like the helicarrier). Instead, I'm stocking up on PS. I've expanded the PS to 64 wide with an extra second floor. I've got three of the PS residential buildings side by side with one in various shades of blue. The next PS will be used to build another residential building in sand green with bricks from the HH. I should have enough parts left from other projects to build an additional apartment building in a lighter, earth tone color. A row of five or six--16 stud wide residential buildings. All similar, but with the type of subtle differences you see develop over the course of time.

Modulars like GG, PS and even TH and GE were great parts sets for MOC creations. Sad to see the PS is rumored to soon be gone.

Is the Town Hall set offically retired? I'm still hoping it comes out again...

I hate that they discontinued the town hall before the pet shop.

Yep definitely gone for good.

If true, it's sad. PS, at least to me, has been one of the definitive modulars. I was hoping it would be to modulars what the Death Star is to the Star Wars theme. A cornerstone. A set that would be there for a long, long time. I'd find it hard to start a modular city now with so many of the classics gone. Especially with the three sets that will remain available. Of course, with the modular line being pulled away from the original intent (appealing to AFOLs), I guess its probably a moot point, anyway.

I disagree. The DA does have some publicized play features I agree, but that does not take away from the appearance of the set. It is a great looking set with some creativity in the build. If Lego can expand the attraction of this series, I say go for it, just don't sacrifice appearance and complexity.

I think PS will be around for the rest of the year. 2015 seal cods are all ready being reported and we just lost two modulars. I would be shocked if it went before the fall of 2015.

Let's see some pictures!

We waited a long time for a pharmacy. Did not happen so far.

We ended up reverse engineering and modifying (we added 8 studs to make it 32 wide, with an outside stair case that leads to the first floor, and a bicycle shed underneath the stairs) this one:

A great MOC, with wonderful details inside and out. We tried to contact the creators (all credit to them), but to no avail.

Well, I guess it'll have to be a bank, then...

Or a police station...

Since the latest modular has more of an American theme to it, I wonder if the next one will be European in nature? People have speculated on patterns. Perhaps we will get a corner based European inspired structure. Banks and pharmacies certainly are both capable of occupying that slot. Then again, it could be something completely different.

Sounds nice, yes, but I don't think the next building will be Art Deco - but rather use the new corbel bricks we'll get in the Friends hotel (gold) and kiosk (tan) this summer. And maybe even the fancy fence from Elves. At any rate, this timing of architectural design elements sounds more plausible to me...

All I'm asking for in the next modular is the incorporation of elements and colors from Friends and Elves along with a great story line and enhanced playability. Yep, that's the ticket.

OTW - now that would be amazing! (I am seriously thinking of/wondering how to modularise the Friends Grand Hotel)...

There are some very nice new pieces indeed coming out in both those lines this year...

How about a Roller Rink? Lots of hot pink with lavender highlights. It could be only one level since there would be so many interior details, including power functions to get the skaters going around in a circle. And of course it would be a front for underground bunny beauty pageants.

By George, I think you've nailed it! We can only hope that Jamie draws inspiration from your idea!

OTW you're priceless, but your posts really should come with a health warning - I almost choked on my coffee.

Me, I'm looking forward to the next Modular whatever it is.

If the hope is that we go with some of the pieces that are being used in the Elves Line or the Friends’ Grand Hotel, then at least for me that calls for something from an Art Nouveau architecture style like the Confiteria El Molino that I am not sure I attached successfully. That style of architecture is very, very intricate and would definitely be a very different feel than the DO. Anyone think we will ever see a façade as intricate as Café Corner again? I personally wasn’t banking on it, but would be pleasantly surprised. What are the rest of your opinions on an Art Nouveau influenced Modular?

Except many will not attempt to increase their skill, but instead have high expectations for a set to be released to satisfy their wants.

Modulars and SW have brought a new niche of people into a world of builders and creators. They are called collectors, and they think in a slightly different way, not entirely in symbiosis with the real idea of LEGO. It is however common for collectors to become builders when the aforementioned frustrations are dealt with creatively and not expressed in the form of nagging about new sets on this forum. :classic:

Seriously though, as long as it's colors or elements viable for use in 'serious' buildings (like the cool yellow, which works perfectly for buildings, or the new window piece to go under arches introduced in that Friends Hotel set), who cares where they were introduced first? I don't think anyone thinks of a pink/lilac monstrosity with fluffy unicorns and glitter for greebling when they bring up points like this.
