I just found this piece in my Legos, the old "engine piston". I also found this piece and made a more compact connecting rod and crankshaft than the older models without having to have the cylinders offset. I also got 8 of this piece in yellow for making a v8, just placing them on top of the old piston squares. For a more accurate cylinder though, you would need this piece, except with a square hole so the piston could fit through. I think it could be useful for large models without pneumatic engines for better scaling.
