I think the 8265 (front loader) is still one of the best looking studless sets and it's pretty complex as well. That one was quite brilliant.

Others which I found pretty good, are 8069 (back hoe) and 8294 (the red excavator).

Of the more recent sets, my vote goes to the following sets:

8265 Front Loader. Functions can be a bit slow since the LA's are hand operated, but otherwise, it's a fantastic set.

8069 Backhoe: Not a super complicated set, but it does come with 4 small LA's. Well worth the price, IMHO.

8053 Mobile Crane: Much better set than I anticipated. Interesting build techniques.

9396 Helicopter: Not a very realistic rotor head, but it does have a nice assortment of panels, small LA's, and the new blade parts. IMHO, best LEGO helicopter since 852.

And you can't go wrong with 8455 Pneumatic Backhoe.

I have wanted 8455 since I got into lego technic but the high price keeps me away from it even if 10 pneumatics to control things is really cool. It is in my top 5 wanted sets that don't have PF

By PF i'm just gonna assume you mean anything electrical, as the PF name has only been used for the past 5 or 6 years. But oh, there's a few. 8455 obviously! 42000 is probably the best of the very recent non PF sets. Then there is the older ones like 8880, 8856 and so on and so on. In fact those are some of the best ever, motors or no motors.

BTW, everytime I see the avatar of dhc6twinotter I always get very hungry very quickly!

8053 is great w/o PF, as long as you replace the black double bevel gears with cranks of some sort!:-)

Also, 8455; obviously.

I've never owned any of the super cars, so I wouldn't know, but they all seem great up until - ironically - they made one with PF (8070).

another set worth mentioning is the large backhoe grader from the late 80's, which really means something special to me at least:-)

8265

,and the 8053 are two of my favorites, the 8455 is a fun build for sure. The 42006 is a cool set for the money, need to pick up one soon to add to my collection.

I guess I'm on your team.

8265 is awesome, if only for the realistic looks

8069 is nice, given the price

8053 is indeed a much better set once you've built it.

9396 is already one of my all time favorites. Awesome looks, nice parts and it's not a car or other wheeled or tracked vehicle.

I don't own the 8455, but if you're into pneumatics, this must be a set made in heaven :sweet:

PS and indeed, the 42006 should be added to the list. Nice collection of parts, given the price.

Hi all,

i am not a fan of pneumatics, i love the mechanical solutions, so i just can agree with the ones above:

8265 - Still in love with it

8069 - anyway i would add here the 8455

8053

and maybe not the greatest set, but i was really amazed of it: 9392 - simply because of the shaping, and all functions realized in a small compact set - this is Technic about.

8265 is a great set, i think one of the best without PF. From the new ones, 42006 is a nice too.

uhhh? 8265 is a nice looking and well constructed set with lots of building fun but on the other side IMHO it is quite un-useable and un-playable without PF - unless you want to get a typewriter's cramp ;-)

That would explain the weight issue then.....

I like these three and own them.

8421 all the way, it uses the 12v system but is the second biggest set for techic. Im suprised there has not many mods for it .

Actually, it isn't. Although it's a great looking set, you will almost never see this in a "Top Rated Technic Sets" list. It simply does not have any advanced Technic functionality.

It's got the looks, although it's lots of panels (to cover up empty space), but it lacks some outstanding technic features.

Not saying it's a bad set, I own it myself, but it's not one of the best (imho).

That's not really a fair comparison, since it does use some (older) form of Power Functions. Or are you teasing us?
