So i spent my whol day today building this little monster only to find out that the lego chain is weak as  and that the machine kept loosing tracks every meter... Oh well at least the tracks were a great idea!

The tracks were done vith a combo of 2 chainlinks and one tread link.

Thanks to the ball joint this machine was able to steer and swiwel some 25 degrees.

No gear slips in here! Alsko note that all drive gears are motorized. Oh and the flexible bogies.

Could that be the cause of the treads breaking? I'm far from an expert in this, but I think most, if not all tracked vehicles drive a single sprocket per track. Wouldn't having driven sprockets at both ends introduce extra tension whenever the suspension moves?

Suspension moves only in the under part, the uppoer tracks part is always tendioned.

Yes, that's kind of what I meant. If it's driving forward, the rear sprocket is doing all of the driving, and th front one is just introducing unneccesary tension.

Maybe, I dunno.

i dont think that this is a problem. i use the same idea at my excavator undercarriage and the driving resistance is very low.

zblj, would the standard rubber tracks from lego would fit on your haegglund or would they too short?

The older track n chain pieces are not very strong at all. I built Han's 8421XL over the summer with a even longer boom, didnt work so well. The chain is not strong enough for a longer boom so I scraped the idea, and moved on.
