Jimny J Posted December 28, 2012 Posted December 28, 2012 (edited) Hi all This will be my first time posting here, though I have been lurking in the background for a while. Decided it was about time I started sharing some of my creations with you all. I've only my latest too show so far and its still a work in progress. My creation is based on an 8x8 Mercedes Titan heavy haulage unit as pictured below. So far I have the chassis with drive and steering assembled, as well as the separate unit too house items such as fuel tanks, coolant and other such items. Mine however contains 2 M motors,. One for the pneumatic compressor and one too drive a small geared reduction unit for the winch. Will put up my pictures as soon as I work out how too decrease the file size. Was all ready too post. Gene Posted December 28, 2012 Posted December 28, 2012 Welcome : ) Looking forward for nicely taken images. Quote
robuko Posted December 28, 2012 Posted December 28, 2012 Welcome Jimny J! you can decrease the file size in standard Windows live photo gallery (properties/resize) or post the image to flickr and deeplink the smaller size image from there using the picture link button in the typing box. Looking forward to your pictures Quote
King Aragorn Posted December 28, 2012 Posted December 28, 2012 Nice heavy truck ...I'm waiting for updates! Quote
jorgeopesi Posted December 28, 2012 Posted December 28, 2012 Welcome, a blue truck it is hard to find, it will be nice to see it. Quote
TimH Posted December 28, 2012 Posted December 28, 2012 Hi Jimmy J, and welcome to the Eurobricks community. I look forward to your updates. Quote
Jimny J Posted December 29, 2012 Author Posted December 29, 2012 Sorry for the delay on the pictures. Decided to retake the pictures as they all had bad glare from the flash. Must apologise as they are not of the best quality due bad lighting. Anyway's, here are the first few shots. Quote
timslegos Posted December 29, 2012 Posted December 29, 2012 Well the photos are certainly better than Alasdair's . The progress looks great, have you done a drivetrain test yet? Tim Quote
Alasdair Ryan Posted December 29, 2012 Posted December 29, 2012 (edited) Well the photos are certainly better than Alasdair's . The progress looks great, have you done a drivetrain test yet? Tim If you had bothered to look before you posted would of seen that the truck is not rc. Welcome to EB Jim,you have made good progress with your truck. timslegos Posted December 29, 2012 Posted December 29, 2012 If you had bothered to look before you posted would of seen that the truck is not rc. I meant with the fake engine! tim Quote
Jimny J Posted December 29, 2012 Author Posted December 29, 2012 I meant with the fake engine! tim Yep, everything runs smoothly and is also geared down drastically ready for another motor to mount above the engine block. So as too rc it But before the rc, I plan to make this 8wd. What I have so far is just something to work from. Generally I always build a basic vehicle and then modify it from there. The ancillary's tower needs some more work aswell. The 2 side plates are mainly for rigidity at the moment, plan to add some more details if possible and find another way to keep it rigid. J Quote
Jimny J Posted December 29, 2012 Author Posted December 29, 2012 Just another inspirational photo, mainly for the wagon/trailer. Have all the parts ready, but need to work the design around the truck to get the steerable axles working nicely. Going for a tow hitch rather than 5th wheel. Quote
Lakop Posted December 29, 2012 Posted December 29, 2012 Looks like a neat build. Good colour scheme and mechanics. Look forward to the complete model. H Quote
Jimny J Posted January 2, 2013 Author Posted January 2, 2013 Evening all. Sorry for the lack of updates on this, have been busy trying out a few things. Firstly, as I mentioned earlier on I am intending to make this a true 8x8. Im pretty sure I have found a way to achieve this, which I am quite pleased about as this is my first attempt at a driven and steered axle this small. Still a work in progress at this stage. Secondly, having discovered my winch too be pretty darn powerful, I came to the conclusion the truck needed some sort of handbrake. At first I was quite happy with a mechanical lever and linkage running along the chassis to the cab, but decided this was a bit crude and bulky. So decided instead to use the pneumatic compressor and a small ram to do the job. The actual brake utilizes one of the gear selector parts onto a fixed gear. Hopefully the pictures will explain things a bit better than I can. Quote
Jimny J Posted January 2, 2013 Author Posted January 2, 2013 No diffs in front? Im working on that one this very moment Should also add that the front axle idea is for a pendular setup. Quote
matias bendtsen Posted January 2, 2013 Posted January 2, 2013 this is the smallest axle i can come up with. i use this on my haulotte multijob. Quote
Jimny J Posted January 2, 2013 Author Posted January 2, 2013 @ Matias, thats exactly what im aiming for. Only difference is im looking to have 2 steered axles. Quote
matias bendtsen Posted January 2, 2013 Posted January 2, 2013 that should be easy, just make two of them, and gear down the steering of the rear one. Quote
Jimny J Posted January 2, 2013 Author Posted January 2, 2013 The older style diff carrier is ideal for this, not only does it make the driven/steered pendular axle possible, but using a second one for the second axle also works for the geared reduction of the second axle's steering. The fun part however will be building this setup into my chassis! Quote
Saberwing40k Posted January 2, 2013 Posted January 2, 2013 Okay, I've actually built another pendular axle similar to the one above, but it is better because of the fact that it incorporates ackerman correction, and the rotation point is much closer to the wheel. However, it uses some very uncommon parts. I'll give you some pictures if you are interested, however it does require the torque tube parts from 8110, and 2 CV joints and sockets. Quote
Jimny J Posted January 3, 2013 Author Posted January 3, 2013 I have the 8110, and Im always open to ideas Quote
Jimny J Posted January 3, 2013 Author Posted January 3, 2013 One thought Im having is I may ditch the pendular front axles in favour of fixed as im aiming for maximum power/torque and pulling ability.Still 8x8 though. Quote
