If you go for a solution like that, why not just use 8 rechargables? That will keep you in the 9V range and eliminates the drawback of rechargables (lower voltage per battery) and gives you the advantage of them (recharging).

V1 motor driver chip is specified at 9V, with a 10.5V absolute maximum rating. So as suggested by Balrog, I'd go with 8 cells (don't forget that freshly charged NiMH are significantly above 1.2V). The added benefit is that you can easily find battery couplers for 8 batteries, but for 9...???

Phil, I'd like to ask you if this video showing double PF AA battery boxes working together has any merit? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lba1u_IQIK0

I like the idea because it is 100% unmodified lego. I would load it with rechargable batteries for somewhere just under 15 volts, which would hopefull drop to 12 or less under load. Loads would not be too great, as I would build a lightweight drag bike...

BTW, parts have started ariving for my power functions superbike.

Thanks for the information. I think I will test it with 8 AAA rechargeable batteries.

@ Kierna

You had on this way not a higher power as 9V but a higher current. Because the PF AA battery boxes are switched parallel.

So, all one would get is double battery life?

Exactly (and fortunately, because at 18V you would fry something for sure). And you better have batteries with very similar characteristics... That said, increasing current may be useful, as you can see in this
