subcaptian Posted July 31, 2012 Posted July 31, 2012 Hey everybody, I guess I want to come out of what this community calls the "dark ages". I saw some videos of Lego trial trucks on Youtube, and that inspired me to start it as a hobby. I tried hobby-grade airplanes, helicopters, and cars but they simply break parts too often for my budget. Does anyone have any recommendations on starting a Lego technic collection? Thanks, Subcaptian Quote
jorgeopesi Posted July 31, 2012 Posted July 31, 2012 (edited) You can start with those ones A small unimog with great trial skills My link Another Nico unimog, this one more bigger My link The last one is mine, somebody has to build one day My link Good luck and show us your trials soon. rm8 Posted July 31, 2012 Posted July 31, 2012 Hey everybody, I guess I want to come out of what this community calls the "dark ages". I saw some videos of Lego trial trucks on Youtube, and that inspired me to start it as a hobby. I tried hobby-grade airplanes, helicopters, and cars but they simply break parts too often for my budget. Does anyone have any recommendations on starting a Lego technic collection? Thanks, Subcaptian You are in time: lego presented us new set 9398 - this is set includes Remote controlled crawler with all electrics (new motors, including servo) for building trial trucks. Of course one set is not enough to build with all you fantasy, so it is bEtter to buy two or more big flagman's sets like 9398, 8110, 8043, 8258. This give you many beams and gears not to think "how many gears left in my box?!" When I came out of my DA I bought first 8043 because of full rc electrics set and 8070 because of big wheels (good for supercars) and full set of suspension. Of course both this sets contain many beams, axles, pins, connectors and gears. After that I began to buy spare parts: like additional gears, diffs, wheels of different size, electrics (like xlmotor and train remote conroller)...because I understood what I need and how to build. Of course I continued to buy new big sets (because of big pieces count and low price per piece) like 8110, 9398. So if you can buy two big sets or more - do it. If you dont want to spent much money for the first time - buy new 9398. Quote
Zerobricks Posted July 31, 2012 Posted July 31, 2012 9398 is a great start. But dont stop there, a couple of Xl motors and a smaller lighter battery box will boost performance. Quote
daniele Posted July 31, 2012 Posted July 31, 2012 I'm building a 8x8 tatra. I'm "fighting" with the steering right now. It's not easy due to the high range of suspension I'm using (the mog suspensions). Yesterday I found a great solution with an high range of steering. I'm building using a perfect scale, so it will be 68cm long. You can find many schemas on tatra.cz, just surf the military area :) Just a question for @jeorgeopesi: I saw you used the 6.5 suspensions. Aren't them too short for this big boss? Anyway, I like it. Tamas Juhasz Posted July 31, 2012 Posted July 31, 2012 Our TT team developed this type of suspension for 84mm wheels Tatra: http://www.brickshelf.com/cgi-bin/gallery.cgi?f=450033 http://www.brickshelf.com/cgi-bin/gallery.cgi?f=485582 http://www.brickshelf.com/cgi-bin/gallery.cgi?i=5212456 - useful in lighter Tatras, like the real one it uses a central driving axle Quote
daniele Posted July 31, 2012 Posted July 31, 2012 (edited) Thanks for sharing. It's an elegant solution. Edited July 31, 2012 by daniele Quote
Zerobricks Posted July 31, 2012 Posted July 31, 2012 (edited) I remember seeing this one in Kestzhely (or how its spelled). It was really small light and fast. But i dont think it will work on bigger (cough polish) models. Edited July 31, 2012 by Zblj Quote
Tamas Juhasz Posted July 31, 2012 Posted July 31, 2012 (edited) As I wrote, it's for light Tatras(that yellow 813 was 1,6 kg), 84 mm is the max. wheel, which can be used for this. Not because of the steering, but because of the 12-12 bevel gear driving. But it's very easy to make it modular, if you have enough wheels, you can make even a 12x12 Tatra(exist also in reality). But in this case the central driving gear should be in the center. Edited July 31, 2012 by Mbmc Quote
subcaptian Posted July 31, 2012 Author Posted July 31, 2012 Thanks for the suggestions guys. I'll start saving up for some of those sets and we'll see what comes of it. Subcaptian Quote
parda Posted July 31, 2012 Posted July 31, 2012 (edited) Nico71 has nice trials with instructions to start. The one Jorgeopesi linked was my start in building trials Edited August 3, 2012 by parda Quote
Paul202 Posted July 31, 2012 Posted July 31, 2012 (edited) Disregard. Edited July 31, 2012 by Paul202 Quote
Paul202 Posted July 31, 2012 Posted July 31, 2012 I would look at the models Sariel has made, he had many different designs you could look to for inspiration. Here is a link: http://sariel.pl/category/trucktrial/ Quote
Thirdwigg Posted August 1, 2012 Posted August 1, 2012 I have a couple of trucks as well with varying suspensions and drivetrains. Take a look at http://thirdwigg.com/category/trial-truck/. Quote
Zerobricks Posted August 2, 2012 Posted August 2, 2012 And i'm originally guilty for this: You can find instructions for my first really good (and most cpyed TT at that time): http://www.brickshelf.com/cgi-bin/gallery.cgi?f=377234 Quote
daniele Posted August 4, 2012 Posted August 4, 2012 I was building a 8x8, BUT i don't have enought cables (mine are too short). So, now it's a 6x6. Because of his modularity, it can be "upgraded" easy to 8x8. For now, I hope you enjoy my very first 100% self made trial truck. (Ok, the cab is from the mog, but it fits very good on it :P ) In the vid, a cameo of my dog named Java :) Quote
DLuders Posted August 4, 2012 Posted August 4, 2012 This is nice! You should add it to BrickTruckTrial.com for others to enjoy there too. Quote
