I am multilingual and read various forums from all over the world and it is really sad how some builders try and deter other builders from implementing certain ideas or designs into their models because of what original builder came up with it. I even see it on here a bit from time to time in the form of arrogant cheap shots. I'll be the first to admit that I am nowhere nearly as skilled as anyone on here and I only build official sets and some MOC's of others but I do admire everyone who has the confidence of posting their own original MOC whether it is a good model or a mediocre one. But the model bashing and criticizing that goes on in some home country's forums against other builders is pretty sad to say the least. I know everyone likes to think that their models/building style/ideas are the best, but this isn't always the case, especially in the eyes of the rest of the world. It's something I think everyone needs to keep in mind. :classic:

Would you post an example?

I'm a flamewar and offending post dependant.

No really, maybe I'm lucky and I am a member of only high quality forums, but I don't see much arrogance. (apart from some fun flamewars)

I would rather not. I am merely just posting this as an eye opener for everyone to let them know that just because comments are made on someone's home forum that there may also be others who understand what they are saying. :classic:

I know I was just talking to a very well known and well respected builder on this forum and he was mentioning the same thing. The worst part, you don't need to be bilingual to to read some of the other forums and generally understand what is being said. Its as simple as pressing the translate button from google. It is jaw dropping some of the things that some very prominent users on this forum say on their "home" forums.

Its the internet...at what point did you think you could hide?

Intriguing. I'd love to see what kind of dirt gets dished out.

As for me, I don't want to deter anyone from using 'my' techniques (like I could) but if someone builds something that was in part built with my instructions it'd be nice if they gave some credit.

As far as I can tell, I don't have beef with any builder.

Well i've seen lots of my ideas in other peoples MOCs, but then I don't really show my MOCs much so I know they have not copied me. What i'm saying here is, it's lego and we're all building from the same elements. Technic in particular requires that you solve many problems. It's very likely that two or more people will come up with the same solution to the same problem so nobody can really accuse anybody of plagerism (unless of course they are passing off a picture you created as their own, which has also happened to me). Besides that does not bother me much. If somebody likes my design enough to say it's better than what they themselves could come up with that's great, although some credit would be nice.

I think you're mixing two subjects. Animosity between builders is by its definition personal, while bashing someone's model can simply result from its low level or poor presentation (personally, I'm easily irritated when people post giant photos like 4000x3000 big, but I stopped reacting because they simply don't care).

In any case, it's interesting to read what you brought up, because I was under impression that AFOLs' society is generally quite friendly and welcoming, and Eurobricks in particular is a place where even crudest MOCs are met with warm welcome. I know a bunch of renown builders myself and I'm unaware of any animosities between them. Unless you count my envy of Mahjqa's crazy video-making skill ;)

In general i think the AFOL community is friendly. As in every community there are always these people who seem to have an issue with everything.

Often these are non creative narrow minded individuals (often i doubt adult, in true sense), who should find the Dora the Explorer forum to talk to people of their level

I think one of the issues is when newboarders use a very known design from a very known designer and fail to credit. But I also never noticed any dirt on homeforums,do you have examples?

I think he's meening some reactions you get on Youtube.

Here on EB and also at Lowlug i have never seen bad reaction's and thats the way it's shoot be, have respect for the builder and yes everybody have his own level.

When you juse something from somebody else give him the credits.

i've noticed some trollish behavior here in the technic forum. not on the level you find at youtube (a desolate place, youtube), but i was still surprised to see that anyone would bother with it here.

I haven't noticed any animosity on the forum, and people here seem to be pretty friendly. I've even managed to meet some members in person, all of whom were really great people.

That being said, I do have one pet-peeve that I've noticed a little on this forum, but more so on other non-lego international forums. It really irks me when a member starts correcting another member's grammar or spelling mistakes. This is an international forum, and for many of the people here, English is not their first language. If I could speak a 2nd language half as good as many here speak English, I would be thrilled. I say keep this a LEGO forum and keep the grammar/spelling corrections out. Even though I was born in the US, I grew up in a 3rd world country, so perhaps this is why I'm a bit more sensitive to this. Otherwise, no complaints from me. Love the forum, and there are many great members here.

I have seen one highly respected Eurobrick who only showed his true face when speaking of one of my mocs in his native forum.

When I tried to point it out here at Eurobricks (using the underhanded tactic of "can some please translate this post? - I need to know what kind of constructive criticism he has to offer" thread), Eurobrickers generally decided to pretend it didn't happen.

It happens very rarely (or at least I catch it very rarely), so I suppose the general "don't confront the BS" approach is preferred...?

Interesting discussion. As Sariel says, some may be confusing critiquing a builder's creation with critiquing the builder. Personally, I haven't noticed any of the latter.

There's too much hearsay in this thread. Care to provide an example?

Before the incredible makeover that Juanjo, my webmaster did with my site, I had at least 20 ignorant hate filled comments comparing me to various builders from around the globe on my blog thingy throughout the course of my first 2 years of having a site... Who these were coming from, I don't know... I also had overheard rude comments made by system builders at a show a few years ago that could have made a grown man cry... This grown man wanted to kick someone's (insert your term for derriere here)... And that is why I'll never attend another Brickworld show...

I have been trying to make friends and build up something at my own site by inserting picture links for various builders from different genres... I am trying to update it as much as possible and get most guys included, but the HTML format is still kind of new to me and I am still learning it...

That is the redeeming quality here. We critique the models, not the builders :classic:

(As opposed to local lugs where there is an infinite amount of personal drama. This is why I post mostly on EB - because it's about the bricks!)

I know i will willingly admit that I used more "famous builders" instructions to get my techniques up to par with them, but now I have mastered technic building techniques, I can start building 100% original MOCS like my ol' grey trialtruck (my first good original technic trialtruck) Speaking of which, has instructions in my Brickshelf gallery. Link is in my profile.

I also have been misunderstood sometimes because my particular nonsense of humor is lost in traslation , but I think it was the only problem I have seen but I wear glasses . In everything I do I mention who inspired me or where I got the idea, some day I hope to do the same with me if I do something good, I guess it's the right way but also think that everything on technic has been done before without technic so that everyone does what they want.

Well, I do not see any animosity on this forum, maybe because I am pretty new. There are courageous people out there who are brave enough to post their creations for us. I have never really seen any negative criticism and I encourage everybody not to put any negative criticism, unless it is absolutely necessary. And no trollish behavior, it does not help.

EDIT

Don't moderators ban stupid people from here? I have seen a couple of previous people who have been banned because they posted rude comments.
