I wanted to upgrade the X truck with smaller, yet more capable power functions. To do this the axles and the body was rebuilt to make the new offroader shorter, lighter and more maneuverable. Now each axle has its own steering motor, which works independently. This allows the truck to drive in almost every direction, EVEN SIDEWAYS. Also the planetary gear train inside the turntables was found to be more efficient than a single tooth gear powering the turntable from inside. Suspesnion was soften up to allow better ariculation and the weight was lowered due usage of rechargable battery boxes (yes two of them). This in combination with IMO the best official offrading wheels reulsted in THE BEAST.

No terrain is too tough for this offroader, thanks to its total gear ratio of 1:6,25 from the XL motors.

Some railroad tracks...

And an uneven 45+ degrees slope

The underside showing the linear actuators and the axles. Interesting, this truck has no portal axles, yet there is more than enough room under axles.

A mandatory video:

I am quite impressed with this truck's power agility and overall performance. It may be one of my slowerer and oddest trucks, but it sure can crawl!

Hi

beside the unbelieveable good surface climbing abilities and general outstanding trial concept (the steering, the transmission) i would like to mention/ask two different things:

I really like the design of the car itself: althought it is not a show car but a funcinal one it looks really good. The use of the special technik plates is well done. I also like where you places the PF recievers, they are looking like police flash lights.

I also would like to know where you got these crazy wheels that seems to be great for trail. I have never seen them on a technic set.

@ Zblj: Are you thinking about making an LDD .lxf Building Instruction file for this wonderful MOC?

@ Darth Dino: The 47349c04 "Wheel 72 x 34, with Lime Tire 72 x 34 Balloon Offset Tread" are pretty rare.

Great power and climbing abilities. For the Czech TT it is still too long, but I really like the unusual concept of steering.

Interesting....no diffs. :)

I'm planning to build an 8x8 truck with power puller wheels and XL motors. I want to do it without diffs, but I'm worried about axle windup / broken cogs. Basically when turning, unless one tyre can slide a bit, there'll be windup in the axle somewhere.

The lime tyres look like they might slide a bit when turning, which would reduce windup? Also if there's a lot of reduction in the hub, the torque on the rest of the gear chain is relatively low, so less windup?

I'm planning to use one XL motor for each pair of wheels (4 motors in total), but I can't decide whether to do one motor for each axle (driving a wheel on each side), or use one motor for two wheels on the same side.

Here's the inspiration: http://www.nov.com/Brands/Rolligon/Body_Load_Units/Rolligon_8X8_Model_Brute.aspx :classic:

Thank you Zblj and DLuders. And those wheels fit on technic? The sets are horrible expensive and i do not see a use of the parts except the wheels. Even a wheel pack will kost hundered euros.

Zblj, can you please show me how you attached the wheels to technic?

I love how this model goes over high obstacles so easily, especially the other Technic model in the video. The planetary gearing seems to work well and gives the wheels a lot of torque without stressing axles.

You can get standalone packs of those wheels in different colors for $60-70. Look for "dirt crusher wheels" in Bricklink. They still aren't cheap by any means, but it's better than buying one of the RC sets just for the wheels.

You wanted instructions?

Here you go!

LDD FILE

EDIT I dont get it why links wont work...

www.brickshelf.com/gallery/zblj/Trial/Beast/beast.lxf

Remember the new unimog ball joints are missing and the 1x4 old styled thin liftarsm must be connected to chassis in the center of truck (couldnt in LDD, rather illegal connection) and connect the springs to chassis.

WATCH OUT HOW YOU WIRE THE CABLE TO REAR MOTOR. I wired it badly first time artround and janked it, causing the motor to loose contact. It has barely enough room to work, so be carefull, or use an extension cable.

Remeber once you click in the hing things on the ends of the axle the wheels hold extremely good, popping them out is very hard but not impossible.

Hi

interesting way to attach a wheel on an "axl" - with a PLATE as axl ;)

I am not sure if i would do this (i am a purist), but your method shows your creativity. And at the end you do not do thar just for a nice looking moc but for a very funcional one.

I will see if i get some of those crazy wheels for cheap...

I find this offroader absolutely stunning!! It "looks" simple on the outside, in terms of construction and design, but is nowhere near that!! I love how much flexibility the linear actuators and the 6.5 L springs offer when combined with the ball joint from the Unimog! Great work!

i have built a chassis with your steering system and if the vehicle is not driving the steering works not really funny. Because the tires are really sticky on the surface. did you have the same problem?
