jovel Posted June 29, 2011 Posted June 29, 2011 (edited) This is my power functions robot named Grumpy.Like other robots he has some basic functions like:-driving back-/forward -turning -lower and raise his arms-open and close his claw to pick things upBut that wasen't enough for me. I wanted him to have some personality. To do that I added some head movements. He can shake his head left/right and move his neck back- and forward. While driving he always looks in the direction he's going. He can also move his eyebrows up and down. For all these functions only four motors where needed!More photo's on flickr. vmln8r Posted June 30, 2011 Posted June 30, 2011 Great work! I love how you've kept it compact by using every part efficiently. The video is also very impressive - especially the white background and those super-smooth camera movements. Any tips? Quote
grohl Posted June 30, 2011 Posted June 30, 2011 This is one of the cutest LEGO robots I have seen. The scared expression in his face is priceless. Quote
dikkie klijn Posted June 30, 2011 Posted June 30, 2011 One of the best lego robots I've ever seen Also nice how you left the technic bare at place like the tracks, it gives a raw look Quote
Jurgen Krooshoop Posted June 30, 2011 Posted June 30, 2011 I immediately liked this fellow, he's got character Quote

Splat Posted June 30, 2011 Posted June 30, 2011 This little guy definitely has character Great work, and great vid too. I'd be interested to see how you get him to go in the direction that he is looking... Quote
Zerobricks Posted June 30, 2011 Posted June 30, 2011 He is so cute and tidy! And he can clean your room! Great work right there! Quote
GuiliuG Posted June 30, 2011 Posted June 30, 2011 Awesome ! I admire how you manage to put all these functions in such a small space ! Quote
le60head Posted June 30, 2011 Posted June 30, 2011 Wow! Great robot! The thing i love most about it is it's character! Great work, keep it up! Quote
Dutch_EE Posted June 30, 2011 Posted June 30, 2011 (edited) I can take a guess at how the movements are made with 4 motors, 1. The drive motor (maybe XL) 2. A M-Motor that drives a subtractor (also connected to the head, this motor moves it left and right) 3. An M-Motor for both of the linear actuators 4. An M-Motor that closes and opens the grip. (this could do the eyebrows, maybe with a clutch) For as far as the eyebrows and tilting of the head I think that they are linked and that the 'scared' look happens every time the robot goes backwards. (and an other motor is in a stop position) Edited June 30, 2011 by Dutch_EE Quote
bord4kop Posted July 1, 2011 Posted July 1, 2011 Great work there Jovel! Really impressive build  Quote
jovel Posted July 1, 2011 Author Posted July 1, 2011 Thanks for the nice comments. It was indeed hard to put everything so close together. The left arm is the only place without any technic in it I made some extra pictures to show the inside: The XL motor drives the 24z from a 'old style' 4 long diff. One of the outputs from the diff leads to the top to move the head back- and forward, the other output leads to the botom to a adder/subtractor ( driving back- and forward ). The same goes for the medium motor in the front. One of the diff outputs leads to the top to make the head shake left and right, the other output leads to the adder/subtractor for turning. The upper medium motor is for controlling the claw. The lower medium motor is to raise and lower the arms. The eyebrows will move when the head goes back- and forward ( also a little while turning but not that much ). Quote
