I was thinking an S motor would be a good solution for steering, valve switching and functions like that which would stall normal motors. It would basically use two small coils, one at each side of the motor and the rotor would just sway 90 degrees either way. A spring would center it. I think it would be great and small!

What you're describing sounds more like a solenoid to me ...

I think there is actually scope here for two devices

  1. A PF S-motor that has reasonably high speed, low torque, and maybe a built-in, very light, clutch for steering regular (not offroad) RC cars. This may be what the racers base does? (I don't have one) I know that's the kind of thing you often see in toy RC cars. I can't think of that many other uses for it though.
  2. A PF solenoid - basically an electromechanical linear actuator, that provides very strong linear switching. It could be designed to go in and out and self-center using a spring. Such a device could suit TrTr steering, pneumatic valve switching, etc.

We can dream :classic:

Mindsensors should really start producing PF devices. There is plenty of stuff for the NXT platform, but NXT elements, especially NXT motors, are sometimes too bulky for integrating into Technic MOCs.

On mindsensors.com it says:

"If you need something extra-ordinary, do let us know and we will consider developing it, like we have done for some of our customers in the past."
