efferman Posted September 2, 2010 Posted September 2, 2010 is 12:1 a gear ratio that is high enough? Quote
mahjqa Posted September 2, 2010 Posted September 2, 2010 (edited) Gearing something down, then up is inefficient. A worm gear is even more so. Can't you just gear something down a little less? Also, starting a topic with the title 'question' may not be such a great idea. It may get confusing if there's another person with a question. Perhaps you could try something a little more descriptive like 'question about worm gearing' or something like that. Edited September 2, 2010 by mahjqa Quote

Silcantar Posted September 2, 2010 Posted September 2, 2010 Is the worm gear supposed to drive the axle under it? If that's the case, you need a 12t gear. Quote

Would it be that hard to move the XL motor down one plate? It wouldn't affect the height of the tread sprockets. Quote
Milan Posted September 3, 2010 Posted September 3, 2010 Alasdair, is that project you are working on your big excavator? Quote
Zerobricks Posted September 3, 2010 Posted September 3, 2010 Well why cant you use studless, to get everything in place with a 8 tooth gear? XL motors and studded dont mix well, and especially worm gears are totally not okay for Xl motor. Quote
