Bedankt! Once I focused on the classic themes (or more precisely, the very first classic themes) I then turned to some of the best source material for inspiration, including the Legoland Idea Book and even set 1592, Town Square from 1980.

Thank you thank you thank you! And I hope so too, but there are some seriously cool builds in the selection. I just hope there will be more trains one way or another.

 

The neat thing about the bridge is that it can add vertical elements to a layout without requiring a lot of bricks. I think I built this bridge for Brickworld 2013, where I used it to give an added layer of track above my train yard. It can easily cut across the short length of a table without being connected on either end to represent a track crossing a valley between unseen hills.

Oh !@#$%, I did not need to know that those things exist. I thought I was silly enough with my shorty cars inspired by Walther's OSCAR and PIKER. Now I feel obliged to go shorter.

(EDIT: all of this is PIKER and shorty car discussion is with regard to the passenger cars seen in the prototype video, they are not part of the BDP11 train that is the central topic of this thread)

The old idea books are great for some out of the box stuff. I have been buying some online and the designs are so nice in it, makes you want to convert it all back to the old days.

Indeed, if you look through the idea books from the 60's and early 70's you will see some ingenious construction techniques for the limited palette, e.g., using the blue era curved rails as a monorail system. And of course there's the iconic 7777 trains idea book. Most of them can be viewed here:

Reduce, reuse, recycle...

My Classic Train was not selected in the last round of BDP (amazing competition so, easy come easy go). Unfortunately, when they released the palette of parts for the upcoming round of BDP, they left off some critical pieces like the steam engine wheels and magnetic train couplers, as well as several other parts that could be worked around in a pinch, but there were just so many. As a result, sadly, I can't have another go with this model on BDP (I also had sketches for a lovely steam locomotive based on the previous palette that I now need to scrap, !@#$%).

Simply building the train digitally was good fun, and working around the limited palette surprisingly proved to be a welcome challenge. I already had the bridge and the 0-2-0 locomotive built, and now I've got a short list of improvements to make based on the BDP design. 

Anyway, one door closes and another opens...
