Why can't I 'unsee' that bottle cap as a 1x1 round plate...? Maybe I've just spent too many hours in Studio this week... I have no connection to this specific set myself but I can appreciate what you're doing, I've been doing some crossovers from existing sets to other themes as well lately (mostly to Blacktron 1 and Futuron). The Ice Planet version I built back in 2001 after seeing a similar built on Brickshelf and then forgot about it and used the parts for other builds. About a year ago I suddenly wanted to build it again and that has since inspired me to build ones for other factions as well. I have never been into Insectoids but there's something about the Bug Blaster that I like very much. Back when Insectoids was released I bought most of the sets for the pieces so that I could build Space MOCs. I discovered Bricklink in 2001 and that changed my Lego hobby forever because before that I couldn't buy sets from the old subthemes that I liked and had to rely on pieces from new sets and finds in thrift stores. JesseNight Posted February 16 Posted February 16 Oh so it really IS a round plate, that cap! Does the bottom actually fit on it, making them stackable? I envy you, finding BL as early as 2001. I stopped my youth Lego hobby with my final big Technic set in 1996 before moving on to other things in life. Haven't looked back to Lego until 2-3 years ago. And a lot of those 80s-90s set have been seriously rising in price over the years. Quote

And a lot of those 80s-90s set have been seriously rising in price over the years. They are unfortunately not stackable in any way, neither cap on cap or bottle on cap. Back in 2001 I didn't have a credit card so I had to send cash (dollars) to the sellers which was quite common in the early days of Bricklink. The prices were much lower and the first sets that I bought were Futuron and SP1 sets. Quote
JesseNight Posted February 17 Posted February 17 I do remember the early days of internet purchases well! But yeah, I've missed out on a lot still being affordable. Nowadays prices of wanted sets are crazy. And if it contains rare/unique parts in those colors, it's often cheaper ordering loose parts and building it in another theme's colors. Which I honestly don't mind doing as long as it fits. Quote
SpacePolice89 Posted February 17 Author Posted February 17 Yes, nowadays some 80s and 90s sets are super expensive. I try to look at local online marketplaces and thrift stores because they have old sets for very low prices because they don't know the true value and just think it's some random toy. I also buy bags with old bricks and try to build sets from those, what is missing I order from Bricklink. But this approach is very random and most of the time I want a specific set in good condition and then I have to order from Bricklink or Ebay. Quote
JesseNight Posted February 18 Posted February 18 Same. Had no luck with thrift stores yet aside from a small bag of random Duplo and a few Fabuland figures, neither of which I have much interest in. But there's a lot of thrift store hunters in my area, always after good deals just to resell it again on eBay. So I just keep theme switching (and somewhat upgrading) sets in Studio, seeing which theme gives me the best deals to build it in. I will stay true to the themes of course. If it's SP1, it's gotta have their jail cell on it. If it's M-Tron, it's gotta have magnets. Quote

I got the idea to build it from a picture of a similar build on Brickshelf I saw in the early 2000s (I also built it back then but later took it apart and forgot about it). The Space CMF series with the Ice Planet astronaut made me want to build it again and then I also wanted to build ones for different factions. Quote
