XG BC Posted January 24 Posted January 24 This has been a long time in the making, i didnt have time for a couple of months but today i decided to finish it. it is a motorized portal crane like the ones from model railway companies such as faller. the cables are routed through a rigid hose and some technic parts into the crane the crane is powered by 2 modified tower pro sg90 servos, it can rotate and lift/lower the bucket. the color sceme is the same blue and white "DONAU-KIES-AG Regensburg" one as my hopper car. This is a fictional company and was created by the model railway company TRIX for their models. Since regensburg is actually on the danube river and there is a harbor where such goods are loaded, it makes sense to have a such a crane there (even though the actual ones are much bigger). Hope you like it! XG BC Quote
Thomas Waagenaar Posted January 24 Posted January 24 That's really cool! Especially the functionality, would love to see a video of it in action as well! Quote
zephyr1934 Posted January 25 Posted January 25 Excellent build, I too look forward to seeing it in action. Quote
LEGO Train 12 Volts Posted January 25 Posted January 25 Beautiful crane, perfect for docks. I really like the corrugated pipe to hide the electrical wires. I can't wait to see it in action on video! I agree with the beautiful color choice. Quote
XG BC Posted January 25 Author Posted January 25 There you go! https://flic.kr/p/2rTqUzD control system isnt finished yet, but ill see when i have time. Quote
LEGO Train 12 Volts Posted January 25 Posted January 25 Wow ...see the crane in action is amazing! Quote
Feuer Zug Posted January 26 Posted January 26 Stunning build. Normally, it's a solid design and good addition to a layout. By motorizing it, you made it a real show piece. Kudos. Quote
TeddytheSpoon Posted January 26 Posted January 26 Fantastic! Great way to add an extra dimension to playing trains! Quote
Toastie Posted January 26 Posted January 26 I totally agree with what all the others wrote: Usually sitting somewhere on a layout to give a touch of busy work, your crane does the work. What I also love is the mixing of studless and studful Technic pieces ... mixed with system bricks. Which sounds meaningless, because all bricks and pieces do systematically attach to each other. But in some particular forum, some folks get bananas when claiming that this is all one system called LEGO. Who cares, you don't. I don't. Thank you very much for sharing your really nice model! All the best Thorsten Quote
Thomas Waagenaar Posted January 27 Posted January 27 Seeing it in action looks amazing! Once you've got the control system down, I might need to ask you to share how it works exactly, I'd love to copy the system into a crane system myself! It's the perfect kind playability honestly! Quote

All the best Thorsten Thanks, combining system and technic is kinda needed here, or at least it makes a lot of sense. My skilift i built years back is also like this. technic for the functional elements and system for the decoration. I am usually not the biggest technic builder (never built a pure technic moc), but technic has an appeal for something like this where you need relatively big height and want to incorporate functionality into your moc. Thank you aswell, I will share the controls and how i do that when i get to it @Thomas Waagenaar. Quote
XG BC Posted Tuesday at 08:03 PM Author Posted Tuesday at 08:03 PM Yesterday i made a simple control system, its just one sliding switch for each motor powered by 3 AA batteries. also made a digital model (link is on flickr and in my signature here). Quote
XG BC Posted Friday at 04:51 PM Author Posted Friday at 04:51 PM So, i wasnt satisfied that the crane was stationary and couldnt move. i have added some track and train wheels so it can now move along the tracks. Havent done the motorisation yet. there is also a "cable reel" to house the cable for movement. irl photos will come later when i get the thing motorized. Quote
Thomas Waagenaar Posted Friday at 06:14 PM Posted Friday at 06:14 PM She's starting to look more impressive by the day! Especially with the functionality! Quote
XG BC Posted 16 hours ago Author Posted 16 hours ago there you go, the motor still needs to be hidden a bit more (or made black like in my field railway locomotive) and the pieces need to be made the right colors, but the functionality is working. the motor turns a small spindle which in turn pushes/pulls the rope which is ancored to either side of the track space and is held under tension. rjr Posted 14 hours ago Posted 14 hours ago That looks great! I like the functionality and overall look, must be fun to play with! Quote
XG BC Posted 12 hours ago Author Posted 12 hours ago (edited) oh 100% it is. maybe i will figure out a way to motorize the gripper aswell but that will come at a later date. As a kid i made various cranes like this, but never motorized them, and i tried to mod a servo for continous rotation but never succeeded back then either (i have it down now with these cheap tower pro ones where it takes me like a minute). And welcome to eurobricks! @rjr today i finished the crane, at least so far that i am happy with it i added ladders so you can go up to the cab and i spun the motor mount around so it doesnt catch on wagons anymore aswell as did some cable routing , still need to finish the control system.
