Murdoch17 Posted December 21 Posted December 21 (edited) The Flying Scotsman with the five LNER coaches. I did not design this 7-stud wide steam engine, but I instead heavily modified it to suit my tastes from this Eurobricks thread from user @damangos ...although the pictures seem to have disappeared from that old thread, and his instructions link is dead. I did, however, rework my original 7 wide Emerald Night tender from 2014 instead of the 6 wide tender used by damangos in the original model, and I also reworked his model to suit my tastes and be a bit cheaper. The engine in question is now modeled in London and North Eastern Railway apple green livery and is made to look like the famous 1923-built Flying Scotsman (loco number 4472) before the takeover of the LNER by British Railways in 1948 and the installment of the double chimney and smoke deflectors in the early 1950s. The engine also lacks a corridor tender, making the model depicted from the period after it was bumped from premier train status by streamlined A4's in 1938 and before it was renumbered and painted all-black during WWII (1943). Although, truth be told, the elongated banjo dome spoils this look as it puts the loco in the post-1945 era, after it has been updated from an A1 to an A3 type. But it's my Lego model so what I says goes, and I say the actual history be damned - I'll do what I please with my train! The rear of the loco. NOTE: Four parts (two green 1x3 plates and two green curved bricks) are either digitally unplaceable or not in LDD, and the empty studs on the tender walls will say LNER, while the cab will have 4472 displayed on it - both in printed 1x1 tiles. These 1930s passenger cars are five London and North Eastern Railway corridor coaches, for use with the Flying Scotsman. Technically, only four of these cars are coaches only - the fifth car is a coach too, but it has a guard's compartment at the very rear of the train. Coming in real life as soon as funding allows. Thoughts? EDITED 12/21/25: Added revised coaches and new overall picture. Edited December 21 by Murdoch17 Quote
LL1982 Posted December 21 Posted December 21 Nice I have yet to tackle a steam train. Like this livery, so great. I would put some details around the locomotive maybe, to break the form a bit. I would also make the coaches longer I think. They appear short compared to the train. So maybe make 2 long ones vs 4 shorter ones? Quote

The real loco doesn't have many details on it besides boiler stripes that I can't do justice at this scale (You can see the real loco in this picture here.) It would be possible to do these stripes with stickers, but I don't use them. As for your coaches suggestion: the shorter (20-stud long each) coaches are because of my standard-size storage boxes (I like to put every part of a train together in one place if at all possible) and also if I wanted to do double-length ones, it would drastically reduce my coaches for it to pull as well - plus the train is too short in amount of coaches as it is! EDIT: I went ahead and added another coach to the train, and added a picture of the overall consist to the thread. Edited December 21 by Murdoch17 Quote
LL1982 Posted Monday at 08:11 AM Posted Monday at 08:11 AM I see what you mean compared to the photo. It's much cleaner engine than a Dutch one I rode. I would maybe add those 'wings' or boiler plates or what you call them on the front. That would look sweet. I am also not into stickers. I am considering having some printed bricks made for my locomotive to get the detail on. Especially that lettering you have. Brick build letters is also impressive but I never tried that. Quote
EWay Posted Monday at 12:34 PM Posted Monday at 12:34 PM Very nice, love the LNER version of the Flying Scotsman, wouldn't have it any other way! To follow up on the suggestion of details to break up the form, I think handrails would go a long way in that regard (example here), and red buffer plates would add a nice splash of colour as well, although I guess that might be difficult if you want to use existing Lego buffer beams with magnets. Can't say I'm a fan of the dome built that way - I remember seeing it on the original damangos version as well and recoiling a bit! To me it looks too blocky, might I suggest something like this? SD100 Posted Monday at 12:37 PM Posted Monday at 12:37 PM Looks good! FWIW, I have DaMangos instructions if anyone needs them. SD Quote

Those wings are smoke deflectors, and I chose to leave them off my model, and it doesn't match the era I'm modeling.
