Hello all !

Being brand new at this I was wondering whether I can run a CARGO TRAIN 60052 along with the brand new Lego train sets from 2024 (or so) . I noticed that the remote controllers are different - but doesn't bother me.

I thank you very much for any help / input you would have about this.

You'll need both remotes of course (older sets use infrared, new ones use Bluetooth) but they can be on the same tracks, in the same room etc. with no problem.  Any sets that use magnetic couplers can exchange cars between them, they're compatible.

If you want to run double-headed/multiple unit trains then the new system is more suitable; they can have custom firmware loaded to communicate between each other and target the same speeds.

You can also retrofit your 60052 with the new stuff. You can get a Hub 88009 and Train Motor 88011 either directly from LEGO or from Bricklink. Then just swap them in for the battery box and train motor, respectively. Judging by the instructions for 60052 this is literally just a swap if you leave the IR-receiver in place, only needing to put a plate under the part that pushes down on the power button.

Of course this hinges on your willingness to spend the money for those parts, LEGO lists them at $49.99 and $13.99, respectively.

That was very helpful. I have followed your recommendations and placed the order for both directly from LEGO.

Being brand new at this a big thank you!

Guy.

Morning Guy,

Welcome to the world of Lego trains! Depending on where you are in VA I'd recommend checking out one of the Lego User Groups in the state if you haven't already, these are the ones I know of. They're all very welcoming and delighted to offer local support and advice. Most, if not all meet in person and online, so even if you aren't local to one of them there are ways to be involved and find out about local events that they are participating in/displaying at. I know RVALUG and Hardlug both have a number of train builders involved, not sure about the 2 northern groups.

Richmond area - RVALUG

Hampton Roads - HardLug

Northern VA - NovaLug

DC area - WamaLug
