ukbajadave Posted May 18, 2024 Posted May 18, 2024 Inspired by this thread I eagerly typed my birthday into Google with the word "Lego" to see if I was a part or a set. Sadly I only seem to be a spare part for a Toyota Aygo Quote

Sadly I only seem to be a spare part for a Toyota Aygo Ha ha ha. You just got me to do the same thing. Sadly, no, there's no Lego set relevant to my birthdate -- but the customer support line gets pretty close. Quote

Sort of like some tall buildings not having a 13th floor (well, they do, it's just not labeled as 13th). I'd guess there's a lot of real life examples of numbered vehicle fleets skipping over #13. When the designers were putting the second wave together, I'd guess that someone threw out "hey, what if we skip 13?" as a way to add a teeny bit of realism/world building into the sets. I agree, but I do find it amusing that LEGO either thought that their customers would be superstitious about the number 13, or that the Power Miners themselves would be! I suppose that 2009-2010 was before Taylor Swift had popularised the number to the point that it lost its “unlucky” reputation. Quote
Peppermint_M Posted May 19, 2024 Posted May 19, 2024 Not gonna lie, I think centuries of 13 being seen as unlucky is not going to be altered by a pop singer... The set number thing sadly did not get me anything cool for my whole birthdate, it think we are a few years off hitting the numbers! Quote

I also had to look it up. What I still don’t know is why I previously didn’t know. Was it because…? - I’m in the UK and it’s a North American term - I have no connection with the drug subculture - I’m the wrong generation to know the jargon of teens/twenty-somethings - Some or all the above - Some other reason If someone could elucidate, I’d be grateful. I suspect that it’s a North American term and therefore LEGO’s designers, being mostly European, had no idea and the number is just a coincidence with no subversive meaning.
