Bought the City set with the big helicopter and gorillas yesterday, its a great build and the gorillas are really cool.

My biggest wish now in terms of African or Jungle animals would be a hippo.

I think we need all African animals. BUT we also need some adventure. That crocodile temple looks interesting and stones.

I have to wait a bit amd collect money to get that set also. Very nice to hear that you liked it so much!

Yes - you would think with Lego now knowing there is a huge demand for new animals then African wildlife still seems to be the theme still missing a lot of fairly standard animals (giraffe, zebra, rhino and hippo). If they do make a hippo though, it really should be possible to separate it horizontally so that the upper half can be attached to a plate so that it looks like it is semi-submerged in the water.

I was surprised that red pandas were produced as they are relatively obscure animals, so hopefully an African theme could also include gazelles, meerkats, hyenas, honey badgers, etc. Plus, bringing back the ostrich.

I understand the comment above in relation to including an aspect of adventure and I would still prefer to see a separate theme similar to the Adventurers (to include Egyptian pyramids and other global locations), rather than seeing Johnny Thunder figures in City sets, particularly if we miss out on all the other characters. Waiting for a Dr Kilroy in the CMF (in his explorers outfit rather than the museum curator).

Well, what is CITY in 2024...

I would say it is city + a mess... SPACE, ADVENTURE, Formula 1, Monster Truck, C.S.I., Sci-fi rollercoaster... (yes there is also some "basic" sets BUT whole theme is a 1 BIG mess.)

I think sets like the apartment building and downtown from last year are the sort of thing we need more of. (preferably more sets like that at lower price points, the downtown was cool but I could never afford one unfortunately)

What you are describing is basically every year of city since it began in 2005: Almost every year has waves that don't really make sense together (2014 Arctic meshing with 2014 Forest police or 2019 Sky police meshing with ANYTHING) and all waves have outlier sets that don't go with anything, but are cool regardless. (2020's Mail plane comes to mind here) So it's not a mess, it's just the nature of the theme.... and one could argue cities in the real world are a "mess" too, by your own definition. They are hodge-podges of different cultures, various eras of buildings, and disparate ideas blending together into one cohesive mass of a city. No two are alike, just like our LEGO cities.

I try to say that there should be a SPACE theme and also ADVENTURE theme.

Now those are too BIG for city.

Agree to disagree on that...

I am not sure why you are so fired up over this. I agree with Murdoch.

Space City sets can be discussed in both City and Space threads. Space CMF can be discussed in both Space and CMF threads. Now we can discuss Jungle sets in both City and Adventure threads. I know it’s confusing but it’s Eurobricks.

Its been that way since the 2010s. Then they took a break from 2020 - 2022 while promoting Lego City Adventures. Then it became a mess again. With that being said, LCA kept it together.

I don’t think City is a big mess to me. I would understand that there is not any slot avaaible for thier own theems like. Space and Adventurers. I just don’t care if they are put into City theme, I’m just happy that we get Space and Johnny Thunder.

I often hear that Space subtheme shold be seperated from City and be its own theme.  I simply shrugged it off my shoulder.

I always hear that City subthemes like Africa, Ocean, Jungle, Desert, and Arctic should have thier own themes but I shrug it off my shoulder.

I think those subthemes help City sell well, PLUS animals. Without subthemes, City might not survive long enough.

There was a time when SPACE meant earth like approach ... if you know what I mean. No it is actually sci-fi, fantasy.

ALSO this new Exploration BRAND is more than just "adventure". It is mythical like Indiana jones. There is main character from old classic theme. There are The Lost Crocodile Temple, with amazing stones...

...

CITY does not mean what it meant before. Adventure should be own theme. Also Space.

I think people say that they should be in their own themes because a lot of those sets are made and they take up space in the City theme (no pun intended) and there is no room to explore other aspects of City life. While I partially agree with them, I also look at it from a child's perspective as being a theme that educates kids on the awesome jobs you can have when you grow up; police officers, firefighters, airplane pilots, sailors, train drivers, race car drivers, astronauts, explorers and doctors. The theme in fact is mostly about real careers that you can't see by simply walking outside your door (i.e. sanitation workers or taxi drivers) and the explorers sets as a whole still hold true to that. I think if anything, the explorers subthemes helped City to evolve rather than go against the initial point of the theme. The trick is to look past the word "CITY" as its not 100% city life.

Personally I think it's also hard to argue that those sorts of subthemes are taking up too much room in the "main" City theme when there's still plenty of great "traditional" City sets being released each year. Traditional City subjects continue to flourish and innovate even with those other subthemes rotating in and out.

On the contrary, these are well funded research scientists who certainly have a base at a university or research institution in the city. These are not rough tough chads who live in the wilderness surviving by their brains and their brawn. These are more like National Geographic nature special filmmakers.

EXPLORATION should be own theme.

If you read this review - you realise that there is nothing to do with CITY. This full adventure theme. And now with amazing main character. Only machetes are missing, which is terrible.

I'm sorry, but the review shows it to be very akin to previous City sets. It shares characters with last year's ocean exploration team and the vehicle has a lot in common design-wise with other City vehicles—both ones for previous exploration subthemes and ones there have been for more typical City subjects like police, fire, or construction.

I feel like you're stubbornly fighting a lost cause, since exploration subthemes like this have been a part of the City theme for more than a decade now and the inclusion of references to separate themes like Adventurers doesn't fundamentally change that.

Since 2014 with the Arctic theme revival I believe.....

I’m getting tired of this argument - i stand with wide range  of City subthemes like Space, Jungle, Ocean, Desert, Arctic, Safari, Farming, etc. it’s still neat to have Johnny Thunderd in City sets and it’s also cool to ahve futuristic spacecrafts that are not in the present-day world (even tho there is lore from comic and tv show despit the desginers’ own interpolations).

Without those subthemes, will City theme survive longer?

Their argument is the fact that it is called City, but its set roster consists of large ranges of sets that DON'T take place in the city. I wouldn't say its stupid. I'd say its pointless to even argue about it as Lego has been doing it for a decade and doesn't show any signs of stopping anytime soon.
