Spacedude studio Posted July 11, 2023 Posted July 11, 2023 (edited) Hi this is my first ~ENTRY~ for the contest! This is my own ~MOC~ Verification dock. Here, in order to pass or sell, you must first show your permit! Every sailor must do that! NEW: You can see my MOC in this animation - Thanks for seeing my idea! Horation Posted July 13, 2023 Posted July 13, 2023 Ok, so your idea ain't bad, but there's not a lot going on. Theme What can one do here? Move the soldiers on the dock? Have them inspect incoming ships? There's no way for ships to go through, so one must wonder why said ships don't simply go around and land elsewhere. A gateway design with a hole in the middle would work better (since how are the ships supposed to go through the docks? Flight? Carrying 'em over the docks by hands?), with ships being forced through the hole in the docks, and it would be much more interesting for kids. Build The palm tree is well positioned, and the docks are a good contrast to the blue water. But again, consider adding some sort of gateway, ideally a colourful one, would look much better. Quote
iragm Posted July 13, 2023 Posted July 13, 2023 I like that it's clean and simple. It would be greatly improved with a small building of some kind. If you're going for old-school, it should have yellow sand and no modern parts (fish, dark brown barrels, modern torch holder). If you're going for modern, the dock is a bit simplistic. I do look forward to seeing more stuff in the future! Quote

The construction technique ,I used is with pieces I have ,so it's between classic and modern! On 7/13/2023 at 1:18 PM, Horation said: Ok, so your idea ain't bad, but there's not a lot going on. Thank you! My idea is simply for the boats to unload their goods here, this is all. Quote
Rogue Redcoat Posted July 18, 2023 Posted July 18, 2023 The entry looks pretty solid, I do have some suggestions though. First, the moc looks pretty bland maybe adding a crumbled building, some sand, and wildlife will fix that. Second, we need to know if this guy is a merchant, pirate, or both, try to add more of a back story. Anyway Happy building :) Quote

Mazin Posted August 9, 2023 Posted August 9, 2023 It's kinda appealing as a world/army building set, but it's kinda weird and a very incosistent set. A giant baseplace, with very little to do on it! My first and most logical suggestion would be to dump the baseplate and just use smaller pieces for water, directly under the jetty. Also, docks aren't realy dock's if there's nothing beside docks ;) So the easiest way to imrove it would be to add some cases with goods, foods i guess, stuff that sailors would like to obtain in port before continuing their journey, or all those things that soldier's might reposses, as part of their antismuggling operations perhaps. Plenty of options, as there's plenty of space on those black parts! Even adding a simple desktop at the top of the jerry, where soldiers could place a book with quil and inkwell to record and keep track of all the vessels coming in to port ( like it was done in POTC: Black Pearl ) would improve the whole presentation. hikouki Posted August 10, 2023 Posted August 10, 2023 Perhaps add some more barrels and soldiers? Quote
durazno33 Posted August 21, 2023 Posted August 21, 2023 One thing that could help you here is to tell a story here. You have a dock with a fishing boat coming into port. What other story elements could you add? If you add more fish to the boat, it would imply a good day fishing. You could have a shop selling fish which would imply that the fisherman sells his fish there. You imply that the soldier is checking for a permit. Maybe you could add another merchant minifigure that is doing the checking and the soldier is just the muscle to cease any improper cargo. Just a few story ideas to build out your scene. Happy building! Quote
