Through Google I found this Interview/Chat transcript from the 1000steine.de Forums.

It took place on the 9th December 2003 and appears to be a number of different people ask LEGO presentatives various questions.

Amongst other things it explains LEGO's motivation from changing to the new gray:

i've read this before... what i still don't know is why we have this dark grey and dark bluish grey. is tlc still using both colors, is one of them going to disappear, was there a production problem that lead to the existence of both,...?

The color switches were made starting 2004 for three colors:

Brown to RedBrown

LtGray to MdStoneGray

DkGray to DkStoneGray

And quite a few minimally used colors were wiped from the charts as well.
