for me it is more about the build

Which is indeed true for most AFOL's.

I am partial to that, as for me its also about presentation - and a brick-printed curve in my eyes looks better and more realistic than a brick-build curve (the slots in the macaroni-bricks irritates the hell out of me). But I cant call myself a true purist AFOL, as I also tend to combine with non-LEGO if I find something that suits me better. Not only custom bricks and clones like MB, but even Playmobil have been put to good use.

If only LEGO would make those...

I agree imagination is everything, but where times have changed, when specialised pieces are involved, and if you don't own many other sets, I can see how a large specialised piece could prevent you building anything other than what the original set was.  Take the City Airplanes.

We could make a good topic out of this if people suggest a part and someone else suggests an alternative use which others might not have thought of.

Here would be a good starting piece.  Part 93541

Yes, I have one of these, feel its going to sit in my parts bin forever!

As for the questions specialized parts.....feel in the long run will hurt the hobby.  Lego is supposed to be a hobby you build stuff, you should build a airplane wing not just get a large prefabbed wing.  For TLG sales drive what they offer.  Kids much like the larger specialized pieces so I'm ok with them offering.  Glad they still offer stuff to make your own things for folks like me!
