WvG_853 Posted October 14, 2018 Posted October 14, 2018 @Jim nice initiative, unfortunately most of the links are broken ... For example all the View briefing links. Quote

This topic has been moved from Technic. It needs updating. See the first line We are working on updating all the broken links. I will add a bigger remark Quote
WvG_853 Posted October 14, 2018 Posted October 14, 2018 Thanks Jim! Again, I applaud the initiative of creating a separate forum ... I may be tempted to actually move from my NXT2 to the EV3. Quote

I applaud you moving to the EV3 Quote

I may be tempted to actually move from my NXT2 to the EV3. Same here Jim; I think, this new forum is a very valuable >not only addition<, but seamless integration into Eurobricks!!! It will make recovering old topics and thus knowledge so much easier. However, I don't share the apparent "EV3 focus" that much. Well - in contrast. Let me elaborate (and: NO offense, this is my very personal view, as always!) The RCX, Scout, MicroScout, Spybot, NXT platforms can be programmed using Win10/64bit. There is a thread somewhere buried in the Mindstorms forum I know, because I composed it, but can't find it anymore. True, I know that any hardware (sensors etc.) are not available anymore from TLG. And that they have a vested interest in >not< selling them anymore. But: This is LEGO. And here is my philosophy on what that means (to me that is!!!): I just recently got hold of 7740 form the LEGO train 12V era. In used as in >used< condition. You know what? It is incredibly beautiful. It lives. It tells a story; from noticing the gradual yellowing of the old light gray tracks and slopes you could tell that is was sitting in "gradual sunlight" for a long time. I was just sorting the bricks according to their extent of yellowing, rebuild the train and there it is. I can even feel the window. The LEGO microcontroller series should be used as they provide functionality. A Scout speaks natively VLL code. VLL - remember? Code pilot bar code? The MicroScout light input coupled to the Scout light output? A NXT speaks natively RCX, PF, as well as RC train code when using the officially supported HiTechnic = TLG IR Link brick. In other words: The NXT readily controls an RC train. RC trains were a 1 year (or so) panic interim solution of TLG. The RCX can do so many things - when programmed in RobotC (freely available) - I have a PID speed controlled train on my layout - hauling what you want at constant speed regardless of inclines, curve radii and what not. And a whole bunch of MicroScouts throw - remotely controlled by a Scout - switch points. All I am saying is: All these intelligent bricks TLG was bringing to market work as of today. And that IS a huge accomplishment. Partly supported by TLG - upon sharing the firmware functions these days - but mostly supported by open source folks, sharing their codes/IDEs/firmwares for free. It is not always necessary to throw a Win10/64bit/MSExcel2050 spreadsheet to calculate how much time it will take that a 1kg mass hits ground surface from a 1 meter elevation - on Earth. In other words: Sometimes, a non-multiplexed, no sound output, plain vanilla input-calculate-output - and maybe feedback loop - will do. Using LEGO bytecodes on an RCX PBrick. Plus: These old intelligent bricks sell dead cheap on BL. BTW: I am going to acquire an EV3 brick soon. Just to have one as I love the history of line of LEGO bricks, regardless of intelligence or not - and because I have the freedom to do so. (I did not have that freedom most of the time of my life). Did the same with NXT bricks. I love them. I guess I will love EV3 bricks very soon as well. Without forgetting what was before. Ha. I guess this is what happens, when you have the 60 years landmark clearly on the life-agenda. All the very best, Thorsten Quote
Jim Posted October 30, 2018 Author Posted October 30, 2018 Hi Thorsten, The focus seems to be on EV3 because the active members here are using it. And of course because it’s the latest version. But other techniques or older versions or other solutions are more than welcome. That’s why I added the Robotics part to the forum. Would to see what you can do with an EV3 though Quote
