Another modular, another mod!

Modification objectives:

  • Make the building symmetrical
  • Enlarge the Diner for more seating while keeping with the symmetrical theme
  • Add more depth to the upper levels with offset floor plans

I also wanted to restrict the more showy art deco elements to the first floor diner by eliminating the jukebox style facade on the upper levels. Also modified the car to make it more true to the huge boat-like classic Cadillacs that its inspired by.

More depth in the upper levels:

First floor Diner with more seating:

There's a slightly larger gap between the wall and grill hood due to centering it in relation to the building:

Interior of the upper floors is about the same with a few minor detail additions like cups for the water dispenser, more free weights, a record player and tiled screening room:

Also modified the car. These classic Caddys are huge, like boats and hideous so had to make it huge, boat-like and more ugly. Its arch nemesis is parallel parking:

Awesome mods, but that car looks beautiful to me! I don't supposed you could show off a breakdown of what you changed? Or maybe even more pictures? It would look even more awesome in red or black!

Thanks. Yeah I know some people like them; Elvis, Springsteen, various elderly people . Anyway the changes include lengthening the body by 1 stud both fore and aft, full fenders (the laquer/metallic colored ones would work better but I ran out), making the body taller by 1 plate, changing the SNOT connection of the front grill and rear bumper from the angle plate 21731 (which leaves a gap) to regular SNOT bricks and the 2x2x2/3 plate w.hor knobs (99206) and various connection changes inside like getting rid of loathsome part# 11215. Oh and obviously adding a roof and windows. I suppose I could LDD a file for it but I've got a running list of brick to LDD conversions thats getting very long. Feel free to copy what you can from the pictures though. I can certainly take more pictures though thats easy enough.

This looks fabulous. The car looks great although I quite liked the original. But I like your building better than the original. It fits in well with the other modulars.

This looks really nice! You've added some much needed extra seating to the diner and I like the inclusion of extra food items on the tables. The car looks great with a roof.

I must get round to building my own copy of DD. It is still lying in my wardrobe unopened. :sceptic:

Excellent MOD, I prefer this one to the original build.

Did you use any additional parts, or is everything from one Diner set?

The only suggestion I have is to add a smaller building right next to this one with an alleyway to the backside - right now the minifigs can not reach anything but the Diner itself.

Thanks. Yes, I did use a bunch of extra parts. Mostly more Brick Yellow pieces for the upper floors and the grey pieces that make up the roof edge facade along with the obvious parts that aren't included in the set. There were also some leftovers from like the arch pieces for the side windows that weren't used which I tried to incorporate as the build for those windows was brilliant.

I get the concern about the access to the upper floors and the original Diner has it done well for a modular (unlike Parisian Restaurant or Assembly Square for example where they have to walk through other businesses to get to the upper floors). If I ever had them in a layout I'd be more inclined to address the access issue but as they're displayed on shelves its not as much a concern, they can just walk right around the side of the building. Getting to the other shelves is a bit of a challenge though.:tongue:

Another typical @koalayummies styled great MOD, although I really liked the jukebox section, you made it look amazing without it! This looks now in the exact style to fit with your MOCs and I love that car!

Thanks  LegoModularFan. Yeah I know a bunch are very fond of the jukebox design in the facade and part of me did want to keep it. Now that this one is done how I wanted to I may go ahead and incorporate that part again but in the center in keeping with this build.

Thanks Bricked1980! Yeah I don't know how you've been waiting on building it, the urge is just too much. I think you're going to love the Diner, it quickly went from not being sure about it to one of my favorites even before modding it.

A really good idea! A more mature building... the car is great too, would love to mod one of my cars too!! Really a great idea and build!

Thanks LegoSjaak. I may get around to posting up the build on the car but as a forewarning it was a bit of compromise on construction as pink is a rarity in my parts bins so I'm not sure how many other modular/city fans have enough pink laying around either.
