StarWars8Spoiler Posted June 14, 2017 Posted June 14, 2017 (edited) Made for a Rebrick contest, this 196 piece model is a miniature set in the style of LEGO's Skyline subtheme for Architecture. It depicts St. Louis, Missouri. From left to right, we have the Gateway Arch, Capitol Building, and Climatron. Across the back of the model, we see the Stan Musial Veterans Memorial Bridge, which stretches across the Mississippi River to St. Clair County, Illinois. This model was built in LDD and beautified through Bluerender. Please feel free to comment and leave suggestions! Thank you! Edited June 15, 2017 by ChristopherLee Quote
Murdoch17 Posted June 14, 2017 Posted June 14, 2017 Cool model, but Jefferson City is the capitol of Missouri! Sorry... Quote

Thanks for pointing that out. I guess I got mixed up because St. Louis has a capitol building itself right across from the Arch. Edited June 15, 2017 by ChristopherLee Quote
Herky Posted June 15, 2017 Posted June 15, 2017 This is awesome, I am not sure how you do it, but if you could share that LDD file with me, I will try to build this. I currently live in St Louis and am from Jeff City. You are both correct in that the capital was once there downtown, moved to St Charles til the early 1800s and then moved to JC. Oddly enough JC's original name was going to be Missouriopolis, how fun would that be. In any case, great design as the climatron doesn't immediately come to mind when thinking St Louis skyline. Most of the time you get the downtown buildings, the arch, a lot of folks include Busch Stadium, but there are unique buildings like that around. One of my favorite buildings is the Civil Courts building downtown, the base is your typical square brick building, but it is topped by an Egyptian pyramid. Forest Park with the zoo would be a cool build too as there are many structures there, but I think you did great with this. If you are on FB, you should post the pic to the Gateway LUG. Quote

From someone who once worked at the first state capitol, I can safely say that building is the old court house famous for part of the Dred Scott case. It was never the capitol, as the first one is on main street in Saint Charles as seen here. It was used until jefferson city was finished being built (it was originally prairie and nothing was there when the state joined the union), and then moved there. Fun Fact: The first state capitol only occupied the top floor: the Peck brothers store and house were on the first, along with a woodworking shop under the governors office. After being vacated, the buildings went though many uses until being taken apart in the 1960's, brick by brick, to their original 1820's form that you see today. Quote
AFOLguy1970 Posted June 15, 2017 Posted June 15, 2017 Very nice build! I once lived in the St. Louis area and have fond memories of visiting downtown. The suggestions I might make are to (1) Try to extend the base legs of the arch out a just a slight bit more to get that classic shape. Also, the courthouse aligns with the arch on its long side rather than short side. There are some nice photos from the riverfront including both. Agreed that the Climatron is not as well known, but it is a nice rendering of a central part of a popular city attraction. Another impressive structure to consider in the city is the cathedral. Quote

I get what you are saying but it is a bit nitpicky, technically that building was never the capitol building, you are right. The one in St Charles is technically the first building. The Old Courthouse building is now part of the Arch (Jefferson national expansion memorial). Not sure if you all know but they have just redone Kiener Plaza, I have mixed feelings. I used to eat lunch in the amphitheater there and look at that building every day. Now that is gone and it is all "new" but that area is super busy during game days; not so much any other time unless they hold some event there. The whole Arch grounds have also been redone. There is now grass there so you can walk all the way down if you choose. They want to build up that riverfront area if they can. Quote
