I'd like to see a woolly mammoth, the same size as the Orient Expedition elephants from 14 years ago. However, I imagine the chances of that happening are zero to none.

Also, maybe there could be a reimagined Fawkes the phoenix and a new basilisk for the Harry potter sets that are rumored for next year.

Well when it comes to Lego animal moulds, zero to none have as much chance as very likely.. We will have to wait and see what summer 2018 brings ;)

That’s a bit ungrateful considering the lobster ;)

Hehe, the lobster is the exception  A normal series now have 2 new animals per series, a licensed on the other hand have one if we are very lucky  But I am worried the next "normal" series would not follow the pattern, since it is not all than normal :sceptic:

Has anyone on this topic ever before suggested the possibility of a koala? That's an animal I definitely could see being introduced either in a new Outback subtheme for the City theme, or for a hypothetical "Outback Guy" CMF archetype for a future Collectable Minifigure series.

Now as far as recolors go, does anyone think that chimpanzee mold seen in the S5 Zookeeper and S7 Jungle Boy CMFs could be recolored and reprinted as a baby orangutan? :shrug_oh_well:

Yes, is has already been suggested :classic:

I would love a Koala, but I doubt they will do an Outback as City subtheme, as it is too nation centric. But I like your idea with the CMF.

Well next years city sets are definitely American because of black bear, puma and skunk. This years city jungle sets are somewhere in Asia where they have tigers, leopards and crocodiles  So definitely not out of the question that we get a series from "down under" sometime in the future :classic:

On the news front:
There is a recolour or a new dog in the The Justice League Anniversary Party (70919), if it is useful as a normal dog is still under the cloak

The new city sets will include a skunk in a normal set for the first time, a recolour of the big cat as a puma and a recolour of the bear in black! The reddish-brown bear seen in the prelims is still lost in the woods..

The nexoknight Knighton Castle 70357 has the pig in a new colour, but it has doll-eyes :sceptic:

Before City, the Town theme back in 1997 did have a five set "Outback subtheme", so yeah, I too could plausibly see it happening. Not only would we likely get a koala from such a subtheme, but a kangaroo and/or joey also.

we are certainly living in interesting times vis a vis animal moulds - with a number of things happening at once:

- city subthemes delivering 'big' animal moulds quite routinely

- animals that have been brick-built in previous sets (bears, orca...) turning up as actual moulda

- some judicious re-use of moulds with colours and printing (bears, and big cats)

- easy to access animals in CMF lines, that seem to be crossing over into sets and Build-A-Minifigure walls

- much more breed / species-specific moulds and printing (puma, french bulldog, great grey owl etc)

As to geographic spread, I possibly spend too much time considering what is covered and what isn't. We now have 'big carnivores' (bears and big cats) that cover the arctic, north america, south america (especially if you allow the leopard or panther to double as a jaguar), Europe, Africa and Asia. A black bear variant actually gives a passable option for many other species of bear than just the american black bear too.

So what's missing? A lion is pretty obvious. There is nothing that is Australian other than a crocodile (I'd expect a koala/cockatoo the best chance in CMF unless there's an outback series. I think this is likely to yield a toucan at some point for S.America too). Then it's really the big herbivores - deer are obviously overdue. I'm still holding out for a moose and a bison somewhat hopefully. And there needs to be some justice given to Africa with a rhino/giraffe/elephant really at some point.

Then there're the smaller more everyday omissions that could be cross-theme - wolf, squirrel, sheep, pigeon, crow and eagle would be my obvious list.

Excited to see what the next year brings in animal moulds though!

Technically we got a crow in the Lone Ranger line, though it being a hair accessory means you'll have to get creative with mounting it elsewhere.

It would certainly be nice if some of the inevitable animal suit CMFs in Series 18 could come with some complementary new animal molds as sidekicks, but I don't think that Lego feels like they need to change the status quo regarding that.

A dead crow hair accessory doesn't count in my book. Unless we are also calling the turkey ;)

Dunno though. The penguin came in the same series as the penguin suit, and the panda costume came with a panda toy ... i think a lot depends on how many new moulds there are.

Why dead crow ? I've always thought that the crow was actually alive as a companion for the scarecrow.

I agree, later when i update the chart over animal moulds for each year to include 2017, I think it will get a high score :sweet: 2018 also sounds promising from what we know so far..
If Lego make a lioness and and a new mould of the head for a male lion, they have used the big cat mould to its full potential I would say. The bear they can make a reddish brown one and maybe a panda if they stretch it, but then they are out of options more or less.. So sooner or later they will make something new from the animal kingdom

If the "black panther" movie has a normal rhino in it, I will be disappointed because that thing that Lego made looks like the luggabeast from star wars

A deer of any kind would be a Lego dream come true! My number one spot is obviously the roe deer, but I am afraid they will do like Disney did with Bambi and made him a whitetail deer even tough He was a roe deer in the original books.. Lego also seems to prefer American animals over European for some reason :sceptic: The reindeer and moose are on both continents so they are more likely I guess..

It is as dead as an herring! Live crows do not sit like that.. It is better than nothing, but if they make a crow that are "alive" the posing would be different and it probably would have printed eyes :classic:

Can't wait to see pic of the new orca to be released next summer (City Antarctica).

I've seen the subtheme referred to as both Arctic & Antarctica. Do we know which it is?

2014 research theme was Arctic (given the polar bear) so assume 2018 will swap poles and we'll see penguins, like the S16 CMF.

Here's hoping, but they never went south before. Fingers crossed for more penguins. And maybe a seal. I'm guessing krill are too small...

I have heard rumours of another new animal mould next year.. It is probably not part of this guessing game, but family members will be if Lego make them in the future

Has someone personally confided these rumors to you, or have you read or heard of them elsewhere?

Something in-between, so I will not reveal the source.. Several people should know about it, but since nobody are spilling the beans, I guess it is still top secret *huh*

I sort of can see us getting a new Dalmatian mold in the near future, probably either with the presumable return of City's Fire subtheme, or perhaps with a Firefighter CMF in a future series. A new, floppy eared dog mold can be recolored for a wide variety of dog breeds, Labradors and Pointers specifically for instance.

There is a husky in the promo pic for city Arctic/Antarctic. Not a big surprise that the theme will have huskies, but nice the get it confirmed :classic:

I know it doesn't pertain to animal molds, but does the arctic explorer standing next to that husky look like to you he's wearing a new hat mold? To me, it sort of resembles a bomber hat.

In Norway we call that hat "female private parts of a bear", so almost on topic

Yes must be a new mould..
