letsbuild Posted May 1, 2017 Posted May 1, 2017 (edited) Welcome to the (hopefully) first Annual Motorized Set contest, where this year's theme is Crawlers. A few questions that will inevitably arise: What is AMS? AMS is a contest where any Eurobricks member may take any released lego set, and modify it to meet the year's challenge. What is this topic for? This topic is for discussion, WIP photos, and questions on the rules. What is this year's theme? This year's theme is trial trucks/rock crawlers. How do I enter? Entering the contest is easy. You send me, in PMs, two pictures and a video of the final design, along with a small blurb that describes your design, and I will post it in this reply. That way, voting is more organized. How long do I have? The deadline is June 1st, exactly one month from now. How do I win? To determine the winner, the topic will be edited to add a poll with the name of each contestant. What do I win? The sole prize is bragging rights. No prize will be sent out to the winner. What will I be voted on? You will be voted on maintenance of the original functions of the model, the off-road capabilities, and originality. The base rule for AMS: No third-party parts. We would like to equalize the field, and allow more people to have a fighting chance. Does that include Buwizz and Sbrick? Yes, it does. The majority of builders own at least one IR receiver. The Sbricks and Buwizz don't have that kind of user base. What parts can I use? You can use any parts from your collection, as long as they comply with the previous statement. Good building! Let's Build! Edited May 2, 2017 by letsbuild Quote
Marxpek Posted May 1, 2017 Posted May 1, 2017 Fun idea! the idea is to take parts from just 1 set and make it a crawler? we can only use the parts provided by that the set we pick? or can we add pf and/or wheels to that? Always up for a challenge! Quote
offroadcreations Posted May 1, 2017 Posted May 1, 2017 (edited) Looks fun! What is the deadline to PM you the entry? EDIT: Haha, just remembered I did this one time to the 9395! I'll still be making a new one for the contest, of course. Edited May 1, 2017 by Offroadcreat1ons Quote
Aventador2004 Posted May 1, 2017 Posted May 1, 2017 Thanks @letsbuild for finally putting this contest into a topic. I was thinking it would be unorganized. Quote
syclone Posted May 1, 2017 Posted May 1, 2017 Everything looks very well organised now, great work. @Marxpek , you need to maintain the set looks as close to the original as possible , but not limiting yourself to the set's parts obviously. Quote
Marxpek Posted May 1, 2017 Posted May 1, 2017 @LXF thank you, that doesn't leave me with a lot of options though, since i only own 1 Technic car, (the 9398 crawler, but... that's no fun). I suppose i can make a crawler crane or crawler BWE? :D anyway, challenge accepted, i'll find a way or a suitable set! thanks for creating yet another fun event! Quote

TechnicRCRacer Posted May 1, 2017 Posted May 1, 2017 Ugh, if only the August sets were released! Quote

You could use bodywork of the vehicle, this was a pm contest before this topic and that was suggested. Quote
Marxpek Posted May 2, 2017 Posted May 2, 2017 Thanks for the tip! But I have found a set in my inventory that i forgot about and it might work, working on it as we speak ;) Maybe i'll fail, maybe it will be ugly, but that doesn't matter to me, it's the process that is the fun! Quote

Yes, but the vast majority of the users own a IR receiver. That statement is not true for Buwizz and/or Sbrick. Quote

That is true, maybe they can still be used, since there is no prize I will work with what I have. Hopefully no one steals my idea, I will add axles and wheels to 42065. This should work well. Quote
Marxpek Posted May 2, 2017 Posted May 2, 2017 @Aventador2004Even if someone would "steal" that idea (great minds think alike, perhaps someone already started on it before you did..) but it shouldn't matter i'd say. Would even be fun to see the difference in approach and execution in the end, a nice comparison! (and no, i am not using that set myself, i'll keep it a surprise until its finished, or until its requested for this event) Quote

JJ2 Posted May 2, 2017 Posted May 2, 2017 This sounds interesting, count me in One question, is there a scale limit and can you use foam inside tires to make them grip better? I'm pretty sure almost everyone has some type of foam. Quote

If the foam you put in the wheels is sold by TLG, go right on ahead. Otherwise, no, you can't. Quote

Marxpek Posted May 3, 2017 Posted May 3, 2017 @JJ2 You mention that foam in the tires will give more grip, could you explain why? (even though it's not allowed here) This is the first crawler i'm attempting, so i have just scratched the surface of what crawlers need. But i was always under the impression rock-crawlers and off road vehicles drive with very low tire pressures to get more grip (tire can "wrap around" a rock), why do we want to make the tires harder in Lego Technic? They will give the tires more grip to the Rims, I have put wheel foams inside 9398 style tires that have always slid on the rim and they barely do that anymore. Quote
