[MOC] HYPNODISK!

So I thought I would spend a day to complete an old prototype hypnodisk I posted on brickshelf a while back. However because the disk is pretty much the same as the prototype posted a while back (besides the internal structure where it mounts to the turn table) it will likely not be eligible for the TC11 competition. But I'll post it here anyway just for fun  .

Anywho, here it is....

It has buggy motor driven spinning disk, 2 L-motors for drive, 1 M-motor for the self righting arm, 1 V2 receiver, 1 V1 receiver and 1 lipo-battery box.

Todays build started with rebuilding and updating the old disk from the prototype. Here you can see the internal structure a bit better.

And the completed disk...

That old turn table is well used and spins very freely. After that the drive motor and front wheels where fitted along with the disks drive motor.

The gears that drive the disk are meshed at a slight angle, but works well.

Then came the rear part of the chassis along with the self righting mechanism.

The m-motor has enough torque to cause both the white clutch gears to slip, so any larger motor would just be taking up space and weight. 

And after adding some quick body work it's finished. A lack of grey corner panels made it more tricky.

But enough of that, you want a video? i got a video, my first in fact, and it's tricky to drive this thing with one hand while holding the camera (phone) in the other, but you get the idea

I feel bad for that truck  Great model, if the judges allow it, it would be cool to see it in the competition!

Poor truck, the self righting system Is a cool touch, got to have that for the horizontal spinner-bots.

Why the U-J's in-between the wheels and motor?

Ouch!!! Awesome recreation of a legendary Battlebot. But a bit painful to see LEGO taking such a punishment. Although I know that is exactly the point...

I like using UJs because even the most rigid Lego construction can twist, the UJs allow that without causing binding of axles. Not really necessary as this chassis is quite stiff, just something I like to do.

Yup!  It's possible to make a more destructive robot, but I wanted to make it look like hypnodisk, which is pretty destructive anyway and my favorite battle bot. I think I remember the original was inspired by a lego model, so I guess it's come full circle  .

Both the form and the power of the original. Unfortunate that you can't enter it because it would be a strong contender for sure. I wish the RC motors were more... accessible.

This is sick,great job on this. I second the sound, it is gruesomely scary! 

I was sceptical about the manouverability, but it obviously works. Maybe You can still rebuild it in some form, and You can enter to TC11.

Some questions:

• How much does it weight?
• Dimensions?
• What would happen if the opponent is more heavy (equal or more than Hypnodisk)? Meaning here Newton's third law. Wouldn't cause an opposite effect, and turns into self-destruction - which is always a question for these spinner solutions?

Really good, it's a shame it can't enter the competition, but here my thoughts:

 

Excellent drive, it is really good how it pivot on the front like the real hypnodisk, I feared that real  grippy wheel will stuck it but a light back and lower grip well make it drive really good!

The kick is good enough to smash a small lego build, but i that that against some better build (and mainly against a vertical spinner or a great axe) it might break itself, not sure about that because it is really though on the external, how much does it weight?

Have to say that it is a really excellent build because I see no weak point (except that is lego and so it is not invincible xD) and it has a really good look congratulations! 

 

PS: I only need some angled connector and that old turntable but i'd really love to build it and mare it fights my bots!

allanp. Hypnodisk is absolutely brutal, and my favorite next to Razor. I was building a razor copy, but it kills itself when trying to crush stuff. You entry is awesome. Well done :)

It weighs 1.044 kg

Dimensions are 41 studs long (44 studs if one of the disks teeth are pointing forwards), 26 studs wide (32 if you measure across disk teeth) and 12 studs high.

Well to test against heavier opponent all I had to hand and built is the Technic research ship which weighs about 0.9 kg, so I added some weights to it to make it heavier than hypnodisk and....

I quite like those dark blue parts so I decided not to cause any more damage, but hypnodisk is completely undamaged. So I tried it against a sturdy table leg. The disk stopped with a loud bang as it hit the table leg but Hypnodisk is still undamaged with a very slight mark left on the table leg.

Thanks for the test, I think the ocean explorer is not a good reference in terms of structural robustness, but the table leg is.  I am convinced. 

( Didn't thought that it is in same weight class as my Bison (1070 gramms), it would be interesting to see them in a battle. )
