I am very happy about the reindeer/stag. Mounts for Elves galore. I have been trying to spraypaint and paint the patronus into a deer, but it is frustrating due to the flexible antlers. Paint breaks off flexible parts. I wish the new stag had a more brownish color, but it is ok.

Will you be creating a new elf faction for the new reindeer/stag?  I always like your idea's for armies.  It would work for Thranduil's steed from the hobbit movies.  I have a bunch of the blue patronus ones because I wanted to build up a faction of ghouls using the dementor torso's.

The moment images of the patronus were first seen, I thought 'I need one of those in a natural colour as Thranduil's mount.' I think I may have mentioned it at some point here on the EB boards. My yellowised Thranduil waits impatiently for his stag steed:

AmperZand that will be nice to see.  The reindeer will be quite useful for several applications for builders.  I can see some great hunting scenes coming too.

@Aurore That is going to be very useful for making custom figs.  I will be visiting the lego store this weekend.  Hopefully those will be in stock.

Hey y'all! Been a while since I checked out this topic!

Something I realized recently after helping my brother to build the Bowser's Castle set is that some recent parts like the 8x8x2/3 rounded square plate, 6x6x2/3 rounded square plate, and  3x3 round plate with cutout could be great for building castle towers, Forestman tree forts, and so forth with a sort of semi-rounded shape (something I've been trying to manage in MOCs with for some time).

They match up neatly with the curvature of other useful rounded pieces from recent years like the 2x2x5 quarter cylinder panel, 3x3x5 quarter cylinder panel with twin arches , and 2x2 macaroni tile which I'd previously tried experimenting with in MOCs. The new 3x3 plate with cutout in particular is great for locking the top of curved corner walls together.

Currently, they mostly appear in bright primary colors which might look out-of-place as the main color of a building, but each has at least one more subdued color option like Dark Orange, Reddish Brown, or Black. Unfortunately, the BrickLink prices of these parts (especially in those more subdued colors) are still pretty high. But I suspect we'll see lower aftermarket prices and more recolors for all of them over time, especially given how extensively the Super Mario theme uses them.

There is no reason that they need stay licensed, so I'd hope they would start appearing in more castle like colours in other themes too.

New Chinese New Year sets and a new Monkie Kid set have been unveiled (news and photos here on Brickset).

The design of the Chinese New Year sets seem very inspiring, the details and the printed parts are gorgeous. I see quite a few parts that could be used in fantasy MOCs, such as the lantern with the printed cow, the dark blue banana, or some minifig torsoes.

In the Monkie Kid set, the Spider Queen gets a new outfit, and there may be a new book cover print - or is it a sticker? Hard to tell on the photo.

Forgot the banana!

@Aurore, Thanks for the ‘heads up’. ?

I could be mistaken, but it seems the book’s cover is printed, not stickered. Book covers are usually printed.

The cow costume hood could be useful for creating a minotaur, though both LEGO and BrickWarriors have done minotaurs before.

The brick built nian creature is supposed to be people in costume, but could easily be taken to be/modded to be an actual nian.

It’s a shame LEGO doesn’t do a dedicated bamboo stem part. The brick built ones are clever but don’t quite capture the look of bamboo. Are the bases of the stems candle parts in a new colour for them? I wonder how many people would know what the brick built bamboo was out of context.

I prefer the previous torso and skirt prints for the Spider Queen over this one, but can see how others may disagree.

There aren't any minifigure legs or anything poking out the bottom of it, so I don't think it needs any modification to be an actual (mythical) nian.

^ Fair point! I’m so used to modding brick-built Ninjago dragon-robots and the like to make them represent actual monsters that I take it as given that any brick-built creature will require modding to make it look organic. On closer inspection, I agree that this nian won’t need it.

I think I’ve spotted another recolour: the extended hilt (lightsabre) that has previously only been in gold, silver and dark bley is now in black.

@Aurore, Thanks for the ‘heads up’.

I was aware of the new hat/hair piece. I hope LEGO eventually does it with the hair in a witchy colour such as purple.

The botanical prints slipped under my radar though. I especially like the second one with anthropomorphic mandrake.

@Aurore,  those are some interesting parts.  I think i will be ordering this week.  I need some parts for builds for the CCC over on classic castle.  Definitely some good parts to choose from.  Need some more grey parts for a castle and I need some more tiles.  I may be getting some parts from the mos eisley star wars set.

Black is a fairly witchy colour.

That one is nice. I'm not sure what the writing is meant to be on the first one, it almost looks like someone practicing their spellings. It looks like the same word written five times, then a longer one twice.

True but black hair with a black hat wouldn’t work well. The hair would be hard to see. I can’t think of a hat/hair piece by LEGO in which the hat and hair are the same colour.

The steed is not the same colour as the giant deer (megaloceros giganteus) seen in a couple of The Hobbit movies, but it's as close as you can get in LEGO System.

I haven't seen pictures of the Thranduil minifigure on the medium nougat stag anywhere else online, so it may be that the pictures above are the first.

That Thranduil rode a giant deer is a fabrication of the writers of the movies; it isn't canon per Tolkien. The movies' writers didn't give the deer a name but I'm calling him Nelphae-a-Nêl which is Sindarin (Elvish) for 33

And the medium nougat is closer in colour to the giant deer than yellow is to Thranduil's skin! :-)
