Technic Jim Posted October 28, 2015 Posted October 28, 2015 (edited) Hello all, This is my first MOC I've shown on Eurobricks and I hope that you like it. I would also like to say that this model was greatly inspired by madoca1997 and Nico71 and their wheeled snakes. The model is a 10 wheel drive snake with two XL motors geared down 7.68:1 and no steering. The model is built out of five separate modules each joined together with a 4610380and a 4610379. To stop it from swinging side to side I have used two 6L rods to join each module. The suspension is done by bending a flex axle over the join between each module which still allows 3 DoF but holds the model upright. There is no steering but I might try and add it at a later date with a servo and some string. Pictures: And a video: Please leave me your views and comments. Thank you, Jim Edited October 28, 2015 by Technic Jim Quote
A Gallifreyan Cat Posted October 28, 2015 Posted October 28, 2015 You could probably add steering with a few linear actuators. Looks good. Quote
Technic Jim Posted October 28, 2015 Author Posted October 28, 2015 You could probably add steering with a few linear actuators. Looks good. I tried that but it wouldn't allow the body to roll which I wanted it to be able to do Quote
Kiwi_Builder Posted October 28, 2015 Posted October 28, 2015 To get the body roll and steering, mount the ends of the linear actuators and the rest of the connections between the modules on a turntable, that way it can still roll while having steering. Quote

I could try that but it would mean redesigning the whole snake Quote
Zerobricks Posted October 28, 2015 Posted October 28, 2015 Simple, fun and cute! As others said, try to make it steer, maybe use small LA's instead of links? Quote
Technic Jim Posted October 28, 2015 Author Posted October 28, 2015 (edited) Thanks. I'll try using Kiwi_Builder's idea when I have time Edited October 28, 2015 by Technic Jim Quote
Technic Jim Posted October 30, 2015 Author Posted October 30, 2015 I've made this model in LDD and it should be attached below. It isn't very good because I couldn't get the motor to fit, get pairs of gears to mesh or add the flex axles. I've shown gears using different coloured bushings: Blue bushings are 8-tooth gears, white bushings are 12-tooth single bevel gears, yellow bushings are 12-tooth double bevel gears and orange bushings are 16-tooth gears. If anyone would like to finish it off for me I would be very grateful. Thank you, Jim. Wheeled snake.lxf Quote
Zerobricks Posted October 30, 2015 Posted October 30, 2015 You have to rotate the axles so the gears mesh up in LDD. I will give it a go in the evening. Quote
oracid Posted October 30, 2015 Posted October 30, 2015 Excellent solution! This is one of my goals as well. You target a stairs climber ? Quote
Zerobricks Posted October 30, 2015 Posted October 30, 2015 (edited) Here's the fixed model. www.bricksafe.com/files/Zblj/Lego%20digital%20designer%20models/Wheeled%20snake.lxf The axles had to be rotated for gears to be placed. One 5L axle was slightly too deep in the motor, thats why it didnt fit. In the future I suggest you to use 5,5L and 4L axles with stop where possible to keep the axles from sliding out. I'm sorry but I don't quite get what you mean here. Thank you so much for spending time on fixing this, it really means a lot (that sounds so clichéd and cheesy but it does so thank you!). Edited November 1, 2015 by Technic Jim Quote
Technic Jim Posted November 3, 2015 Author Posted November 3, 2015 I mean, is the goal to climb stairs ? That wasn't the specific goal but it can do that if the stairs aren't too steep Quote
oracid Posted November 4, 2015 Posted November 4, 2015 The problem climbing stairs, this is my obsession. Look at these videos and see that in yours at 1'55, you manage it quite well: Quote
Technic Jim Posted November 4, 2015 Author Posted November 4, 2015 The problem climbing stairs, this is my obsession. Look at these videos and see that in yours at 1'55, you manage it quite well: You're right, it can climb over pretty big lumps like shoeboxes but that is different to stairs because of grip problems. It is possible with EV3 though Quote
stigge72 Posted November 4, 2015 Posted November 4, 2015 Nice one. Like others before me, I'd love to see it with stearing. (And/or even longer... ) Quote

Technic Jim Posted November 4, 2015 Author Posted November 4, 2015 (edited) Nice one. Like others before me, I'd love to see it with stearing. (And/or even longer... ) I would but I don't have enough ball joints/wheels. However, I know of a website called bricklink... Edited November 4, 2015 by Technic Jim Quote
Technic Jim Posted November 4, 2015 Author Posted November 4, 2015 I'm going to break this model up soon, is there anything else people would like me to do before it is gone? Quote
Technic Jim Posted December 16, 2015 Author Posted December 16, 2015 Sorry for the bump but I lied in the post above; I haven't broken the model up yet and I took it out for a drive yesterday because it was the first bit of nice weather (not dark or raining) I've had come my way in a long time. I also took out my gopo and, with some previous footage, I have compiled a bonus video. Please leave feedback and I hope you enjoy the video: Quote
