lostdriveway Posted October 15, 2015 Posted October 15, 2015 G'day everyone, I started working on my new city layout a couple of days ago so the attached photo's are the WIP so far. I just need a few more straight pieces to finish the sidings and also a quite a few base plates to cover the boards. I also need a name for my city so feel free to drop some suggestions! Looking down to the left side of the town - there is a cargo terminal on the left, fairground in the middle and farming on the right. Behind the fairground will be a mountain region. To the bottom of the photo will be a recycling depot and fueling depot. We then move into Main Stree - there is a space between the PR and the FB for the DO which I'm getting for Christmas. To the right of the station will be a bus terminal. Right hand side of Main Street - bus terminal and general business etc. Right hand side of the layout - Beach and houses to the far left, Emerald Night workshop on the right. Can you spot the Foreman sleeping on the job? She wasn't very helpful! So there you go - lots of base plates required - might throw in a mountain and maybe a tunnel in somewhere so I can build on top - I have the Mine set and Harbour set to build up as well!! Plus I need to find room for a baseball field!! Arhhhh lots to do lots to do!! Thanks for looking and don't forgot your City name suggestions! Quote
Lego Dino 500 Posted October 15, 2015 Posted October 15, 2015 This looks really good. My only suggestion would be to maybe add some inclines and elevations to the track around the mountain area, to help build up the terrain and to give a bit of dimension to the track. You can do this by inclining the track 1 plate every 16 studs of track, which is just enough that trains can climb without the motor stalling, and it looks like you have enough room to raise it up 6 bricks by the time it hits the curve on the left. Hmm yes that could work - I didn't want to do too much to the track because I hate how my Maersk wheel slips around the curves. Also means I need to replace the o-rings for traction and get some more train motors which is on the list anyway. Might have to change the siding on the farm side too but that's workable! Quote
Chilis Posted October 15, 2015 Posted October 15, 2015 (edited) Name suggestion based on your nick: LostCity ;) Looks promising but the traintracks takes up much space...Try to make some elevated areas and place buildings on top, let the traintrack go under the building like I have done.. you may find some inspiration in my City, ChillVille: www.instagram.com/chilis_no Brick on! lostdriveway Posted October 15, 2015 Author Posted October 15, 2015 Thanks Chilis - yes I will be adding some elevated areas now - that way I have more realestate for buildings etc! Quote
lightningtiger Posted October 16, 2015 Posted October 16, 2015 Looks nice so far, best to make room for the BB, DO and PR or are you going to start MOC'ing some buildings. Brick On 'lostdriveway' ! Quote
Lego Dino 500 Posted October 16, 2015 Posted October 16, 2015 (edited) For the mountains and terrain, one of my favorite pieces to use would be the 4x6 plate. You can get it in a pretty good selection of colors, and you can stagger the placement of it to create some pretty decent looking hills and shallow mountains, and you'd be able to reach about 2 2/3 a brick high for every 16 studs of length, which would also let you add in some realistic scenery to blend in any mountains and valleys. And you would have a bit more room for buildings if you removed the short siding from by the Fairground Mixer. Just a few more tips though, I'm excited to see more updates to this. Brick On 'lostdriveway' ! Thanks Lightningtiger - I already have the PR there on Main Street - the gap between the PR and FB is for the DO - the BB I'm still trying to figure out where to put it!! Yes I will be removing the siding from where the mixer is and also relocating the station - i will raise the outside track down that end and as a part of the mountain there cover the inside track with a tunnel. That could also mean that I raise that entire far side where the farm is to put that at a higher level.... Quote
lightningtiger Posted October 16, 2015 Posted October 16, 2015 Ah, yeah I see the PR and yeah you have an issue with the BB......easy extend the road by another 32 stud road plate and put it between the DO and FB......you better hope Lego never do a police station eh ? Quote

I actually hope they do a modular police station because at the moment the only police I have is the Dog Van so my local force don't have a base yet... I have seen a nice custom modular though which I might end up building! Quote
ilikeboomerang1 Posted October 17, 2015 Posted October 17, 2015 I feel that you could ''improve'' your roads by using the new DBG 32x32 roads. Also, why don't you sell your Metro Park & Service Tower and instead buy the City Garage? It fits way better with the new 6-wide cars. Quote
timmyc1983 Posted October 17, 2015 Posted October 17, 2015 This is a fantastic start nad it looks like you have a great area to work with. I would agree, and I know from experience, train track take up alot of room, so any way you can elevate or tunnel them is good, BUT that also takes up bricks too it's big commitment to make a proper town as so many have done on here!! However, i look forward to seeing your progress happy building Quote

Yes road plates are being changed for the new road plates when I can fit them into the budget. The Metro Park and Service tower is a big part of my childhood so it will never be sold! If anything I will be removed if my brother wants to claim it back from me! Quote

Or, you can have both and make it a Battle of the Parking Garages! Quote
ParmBrick Posted October 17, 2015 Posted October 17, 2015 Very cool!! This is a very good beginning! I suggest to buy or built a police station Quote
