Plaid Beard Posted July 20, 2015 Posted July 20, 2015 Not sure if this is the right forum for this MOC, but it is our time period and it is made from pirate Lego! This is a MOC I did last year for practice, and I liked the way it turned out. It's a scene from Washington Irving's story, "Rip Van Winkle," which is about a guy who goes hunting in the mountains of New York in the 1700s, gets drunk and bowls with the ghost of the famous explorer Henry Hudson, falls asleep for 20 years, and wakes up to find his entire world changed. It's a wonderful story, and I do enjoy illustrating scenes from Irving's stories with Lego (he also wrote "The Legend of Sleepy Hollow"). Here's a good shot of the bowling pins (I think they actually were playing 9 Pins in the story). When Van Winkle woke up after 20 years, he thought someone had stolen his musket and replaced it with an old, rusty one. When he wandered back to his village, he discovered that most of his family was long gone, and that the American Revolution had taken place while he napped. Quote
James Wellington Posted July 20, 2015 Posted July 20, 2015 (edited) A nice little MOC! I have not read the story, but I do know of Henry Hudson (the Hudson's Bay is named after him, as you probably know). I like the vines rapping around the guy. Great job! Governor Mister Phes Posted July 20, 2015 Governor Posted July 20, 2015 Local Grammar Nazi here... "napping" has two p's... "Naping", while not an official word has a couple of interesting colloquial definitions according to the Urban Dictionary. leering over someone while granty grinning. "ticky is naping over me" The raping of noobs, often in online mmo games. "Ah mah gawd, naping with surprise anal rapes is fun." Make of that what you will... Quote
Plaid Beard Posted July 20, 2015 Author Posted July 20, 2015 Local Grammar Nazi here... "napping" has two p's... Good to meet a fellow GN! I didn't realize I'd spelled it wrong until after I hit the post button. I went back to the full-edit mode to fix it and found that I couldn't. If anyone can tell me how to fix it, I'd be obliged. PeroTheLegoman Posted July 20, 2015 Posted July 20, 2015 Lovely! Where did you acquire the sleeping head? Quote
Plaid Beard Posted July 20, 2015 Author Posted July 20, 2015 Lovely! Where did you acquire the sleeping head? Thanks! The sleeping head came from one of the collectable minifigures - it was a guy in pajamas with a teddy bear. One side of the head was yawning and the other side was sleeping. Quote

Jreacher Posted July 20, 2015 Posted July 20, 2015 haha thats a cool little MOC! I love how you added the bowling ball and pins and the vines covering Rip. Quote
dr_spock Posted July 20, 2015 Posted July 20, 2015 Nice little build. Did someone or something ripped up his pants? Hmm, could that be "naping"? Quote
Plaid Beard Posted July 20, 2015 Author Posted July 20, 2015 Nice little build. Did someone or something ripped up his pants? Hmm, could that be "naping"? In a past life, his torso and legs were apparently stranded on a desert island. And I found his hat in a crack in my living room floor, oddly enough. Quote
Captain Dee Posted July 25, 2015 Posted July 25, 2015 I like the story (and its other well-known counterpart involving some Crane dude) and I also enjoy this little creation. The minifig makes a good Van Winkle and the overgrown vegetation looks appropriate for the setting. The bowling pins are a good touch as well. I would like for all EB members to be able to edit the titles of their own topics for this very reason. I appreciate good grammar but I think "Grammar Nazi" is a pretty strong term. Actually, it makes me think of someone who wants to exterminate grammar altogether. Perhaps "Grammar Police" is a better term. I'd never heard of "naping" and it sounds a bit out of place here. I realize single-consonant misspellings are common with words like that. I know of people who have gone fishing and caught strippers. Anyway, the subject is fine and I'll take it in this forum due to the time period and Pirates-theme parts. Good work. Quote

Perhaps "Grammar Enthusiast" or "Grammar Aficionado" should be the new term. Thanks to everyone for the support and comments! I'm currently finishing off another MOC or two and have plans for a couple more, and I can't wait to share them! Quote
