I stumbled upon the photo below on Flicker, and thought of this thread. It would interesting/fun to list some of the flagrant/obvious/wrong installations.

Can you tell what's (apparently) wrong with the installation shown below?

Now, what else have you seen that "you think" is a no-no, at least at first sight?

Edit: I'm not sure what happened to the title: I meant to write 'Misuses of Technic Parts'

And, now I'm asking the MODs to change it to "Apparent Misuses of Technic Parts"

You're both correct. It's not a differential anymore if the two gears spin at the same rate.

Unless of course (that is why I said 'apparently' in my original post), the axles going through both small gears are offset by one half width (one in, one out) and the bushing is attached to one of the axles only.

Although that bush may seem wrong, Thirdwigg made this MOC and he is a great builder. It probably wasn't your intent, but this thread seems to be "making fun" of the error in someone's creation which they probably put hard work into and I don't think it is worth blatantly pointing it out for everyone to see :sceptic:. A thread discussing errors in TLG sets would make sense as they are meant to have quality control, but in a MOC everyone can make mistakes and it is absolutely natural

Just my 2 cents^^

I don't think it's a 7M shaft; the shaft axles are a 3M and a 4M (see the teeth of the bevels are offset) so the central bush is on the 4M one and serves to keep the bevels on their shafts. I expect with 2x 3M ones they tended to pull out easily.

The z24 crown wheel has been modified to cut down its hub so that it doesn't foul the diff cage.

Mounting it without a beam behind it (see the half bush) means its engagement with the diff will be compromised under heavy loads.

There is a single uni joint each side when 2 are needed to do parallelogram suspension, but it might be that the ball joint parts have been used instead e.g. the top shaft looks dark bley.

See how it works and learn without criticizing :classic:

I was not making fun of anyone, and my apologies if it came across that way. In fact, that is why I wrote 'apparently' when I asked the question. It may very well be that both axles are offset by L/2 (or M/2) and that gives the 'appearance' that it is a wrong installation, when in fact it is not.

I agree the title is a bit 'provocative' and in these modern times of political correctness, might not be appropriate. I'm thus asking a Moderator (Jim?) to change the title to 'Apparent Mistakes'.

How's that?

There is actually nothing wrong with it if you know how exactly it is being used..

This is a slick trick to keep the gears and axles from moving...

Edit: Nevermid, it has already been cleared up in post #6...

We have a very harsh crowd tonight. Either that or 'bad' readers. The emphasis is on 'apparently' in my original post, that is why it is between quotes

By your same token: 'Learn to read, before you make assumptions' :classic:

If anything at all, this thread is highlighting ThirdWigg's Ingenious contraption.

According to the timestamps, he made his comment before you edited yours, so you really can't fault him for something that apparently wasn't there... Or maybe it was...

When you told posters that they were correct in post #4, your "Apparent" notion had basically been eliminated as you had already drawn your conclusion...

In my opinion this thread should be locked or deleted as it is only going to lead to ugliness...

Sorry I didn't mean to seem harsh. I also posted before you edited the original post

No biggie, and no need for apologies. I edited the original post to change the picture size, but the the word 'apparently' was always there. Maybe it's my style that was a bit 'offending' but it was not my intention.

As I've said in some of my posts/replies in other threads, this is only a hobby, and no one should take the comments here skin-deep (me included). It's a forum for discussion, and opinions are never right or wrong. *Peace*

Again, I agree about the time stamp, but I edited my post to change the picture size. The word 'apparently' was always there. I do KNOW what I wrote, and what my intentions were. If we're going forensic and being judgemental, there is no point being here. Yes, I reckon that my style was a bit 'provocative' but okay, it triggered a 'healthy' discussion. I hope we all agree and can get back to the initial intention of this thread:

What are 'apparent' misuses have you come across, involving Technic Parts, of course?

I asked for the thread to be deleted.... I think it will be for the best... :classic:

Fair enough, I'll support that for the sake of keeping this forum 'civil'. Gotta be 'mindful' of the spectrum of 'sensitivities' on here. *Peace*
