The two dials of entries are the small ones, the large one with the back is that of the results.  To add one proceeds as follows:

- Dial at zero, one turns the crank of right-hand side until reaching the first figure, the dial of results posts the first figure then the dial at left is blocked, and the crank is turned, it is the right dial which to turn and one stops with the second figure.  The dial posts the sum of both.

Nico, There are some good ticking counter mechanisms that could be of use, there is my chain drive:

Great work. This is really amazing.

I would love to see a video of this working.

@ Nazgarot:  Nico71 used his Mechanical Calculator in this Great Ball Contraption (GBC) video.  It is a  "A counter for Fanabrique 2010. 5 digits (one is missing) with a 6t wheel connected to a 12/20 reduction to provide rotation of counter. Each digit is connected with 1/10 reduction. The system is very accurate because there is only one direction of rotation, so no dead point. I put a linear clutch on M-motor and on other to synchronise the wheel and the counter. http://www.nico71.fr...marble-counter/ ."

This is quite old moc but still nice to be featured by you david. I have been working for a long time on calculation machine, not easy to deal with dead-point-angle of gears (I assume play of gap in english words ?). I will publish my work as soon as the multiplication works.
