Speed IR controller
MarcoB replied to Matt The Tuba Guy's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
That speed control has problems when trying to use it with something else than trains, hard to explain, but I tried it on sariel's page, who (more or less) agreed that also. It's not exact/fast enough to react on changes. Here's part of my post there: -

Fireing mechanisms

How about my old creation? But is my favorite!(If you want to destroy your city, literally ) -
Try to buy even numbers of items, keep the lots/total sum rate sensible. I.e. sellers do not like to collect long list of: One 1x1 red plate, two 2x2 blue brick, one 1x2 tile, 4x 1x3 black plate and get few dollars for the job ... Better to buy 10x, 10x, 10x, 10x of those. Especially with items that has no significant value when buying just few of them. One seller stop-listed me when I made my first BL shoppings years ago buying like that. But it has been removed later :) Also, Bricklink's forum is a very good place to ask help. I can almost for certain say, that those sellers who are active there, you can count on that you will get good service on their shop. Edit: And one more important tip. If you have problems, talk about it with the seller. I have had all kind of problems, but all are solved (exept one) peacefully.

Best AA batteries
MarcoB replied to davidmull's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
I have been really pleased with these rechargeable batteries: GP ReCyko Those stay charged for several months. -
I agree with this 100%! That's why I decided to build one to myself! Now I belive I have all the parts, exept those big red dishes on the backmost wagon. Can anyone say what they are? Part of that 8510 Roborider box? Please don't tell me that I will need two of those rare sets because I think there are two of those dishes, the other is seen on the video.

Supercool! I like the engines the most. It would be nice see that in action on some high-budget scifi movie!

LXF to Part List to Wanted List
MarcoB replied to dolittle's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
At least I know that .lxf files are zip files. Rename lxf to zip and you can open it with winzip etc. It contains 2 files: image100.png image100.lxfml First one is a image of the creation and the last one contains all the data. .lxfml contains rows like: <Part refID="2" designID="32524" materials="26"> DesignID? Is it a part number? material? Color ID? If you search bricklink catalog with that number, result is Technic, Liftarm 1 x 7 Thick. Someone who has created a .lxf file could easily compare the file data with the "real data". -
We also have cats, two 7 years old, red male, black female. Luckily they don't chew lego. But it's horrible enough if someone forgets little pieces on the floor, soon those bricks are found in various places around the house, like under sofa, under carpets or in any small hole which fits a lego. The male cat has also strange habit, it drops often his toys in the cats water bowl. Brics are found from there too

MOC: working power functions lift
MarcoB replied to apemax's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
I think you only need to winch one end of the string (other end is fixed). Or attach the string in the middle of the lift? -
RC motor & PF
MarcoB replied to MarcoB's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
OK, that really explains the behaviour AND why my receiver is still working! It's good to know that there IS a protective circuit in the receiver. Applauses for Lego! So you can use RC motor with PF, BUT that consumes receiver more than PF motor(s), and may stop to function (for ever) some day Thanks Zblj for the info! -
I build a RC car with one RC motor and with PF IR receiver etc. It was fun to drive with it because it was light-weighted so skidding was easy, you could do "burnout" circles too Everything worked fine but after a while car started to malfunction: Even I pushed throttle on, motor did not run continuously, it made stops (on/off) in about 1-2 seconds intervals. At first I didn't understand what is going on, assumed that something is interfering IR signal, batteries low or something. Then, by accident, I sniffed the IR receiver and it had a burn smell, an electronic burn smell. After that, I have not used RC motor with any PF parts.. Luckily, IR receiver still (seems to) work's, at least with PF components. This site also warns about RC motor usage: "Not recommended for use with a RCX which can't deliver the current needed by this beast." Well, RC motor consumes almost twice the current than a PF XL motor Has anyone came across the same problem? Does anyone know about the specs for power function components (current limits etc) ?

After reading more threads about Peeron issues, it came clear to me that there's still a lot of people who wants Peeron to rise from the ashes (the situation seems to be like that to me, don't know for sure). Well of course there are, stupid me I would like to have little talk about lego fan's needs for a lego part database. But first of all, some history about my site. I'm also fan of Peeron and very grateful for their (and users behind Peeron) big work. I used Peeron for years (and still using), but at some point I got frustrated it's speed (I'm a impatient person ) and to slow invetory updates. So I created a simple page for my own needs only, no databases of any kind. Then added more useful features, MySQL database and so on. Then I got involved with LUGBULK and someone asked who would be willing to create a ordering system because excel pages are really unpractical to use. My nameless site was suitable and LUGBULK order hanling system was designed and added (several other peoples were involved in that planning too). Then I began to think that maybe someone else would like use this site and basebrick was born. So I'm not trying to step anyones toes - I just want a site where I can browse my Lego collection easily. I don't care is it basebrick or some else. Exept that I'm a database fanatic (huh ) and my other hobby is web coding, so basebrick has been very interesting to create. It's actually my fourth web database creation and one other (Movie Collection) has been running for eight years now. So basebrick is here to stay, at least for my own use. Back to the point. At some point I was sending mail to Peeron asking can I do something to help, but couldn't figure out what to say ... probably they will never answer; "who's this guy?" Anyway, maybe Peeron could have some ideas from my site? Dunno. But the question basically is, what do I do with basebrick and what lego fans want ? Do they just want to wait and belive that Peeron will rise again? Well, I hope that too. REALLY!
-
I think that feature would be possible to create (and useful too), but it would take A LOT of database resoureses because it would go through ALL ~10.000 sets. Peeron would need Google hardware

Thanks for your comment. You're right, that should be better, I don't like that either. But one major problem is that those items can have id numbers containg numbers and letters. That's why sorting must be alfabetic. It's also a MySQL database desing issue. Anyway, I will invetigate more to maybe find a better sorting solution.

I'm sorry. I'm not trying to advertise, well maybe sort of.. Actually I'm just trying to offer LEGO fans something new and possibly interesting and needful. And the site is totally free. You referring to my post count sounds like I should have "talked" more before posting this thread? Well, I just browse here and talk more elsewhere (in a Finnish forum). But again, sorry I haven't asked your permission, just didn't cross my mind, and if you still feel that I have done "too much", delete this whole thread. I have no hidden agendas
