[MOC] The Ethics of Artificial Intelligence
Dave Shaddix replied to Dave Shaddix's topic in LEGO Sci-Fi
I got very lucky with a series of purchases and got those 1x6x5 panels and those 1x2x5 bricks for next to nothing. Oddly enough, I think I could go for more! -

I know its a mosaic, but it's sci-fi! The completed brick built mosaic for Phoenix Comicon. It is 96x128 studs, or 30"x40", mounted on 1/2" plywood and ready to hang. Leonard Nimoy is scheduled to appear at Phoenix Comicon, so I had a specific audience in mind when I started planning this out. So until May, this thing is looking pretty awesome on my wall. MOC: Fantasy Island: Island Bungalow
Dave Shaddix replied to WesternOutlaw's topic in Special LEGO Themes
Nicely done. I had this theme on my table for a while after I wrapped up my Giligan's Island project. Fantasy Island seems like such a great theme for LEGO, I am surprised that it hasn't been done well before now. Again, nice work here! -
I actually saw this one coming... Why wouldn't you use a harpoon to shoot a squid? Or if you WERE a squid, what would the 'serious weapon' be? A harpoon! It's meant to throw a little whimsy into the scene. It is a harpoon, not a rifle. ;-)

Thanks for the words guys, this was a fun project. That's exactly what I used.

This is the rebuilt version of my earlier kachina which I was never quite happy with. I removed the legs and extended the kilt all the way down to the base. This modification allows the figure additional height and stability. This updated version also corrects the proportional issues in the earlier version. --- Palavitkuna or Red Kilt Runner: The Runner Kachinas or Wawash Kachinum appear during the spring dances to run with the men of the villages. If the man escapes the Kachina by the end of the village street, he is awarded a prize (usually some form of bread). If the Kachina should win the race, the man is whipped by the kachina with yucca leaves. Palavitkuna is distinctive in the color of the kilt that he wears. For more photos, visit my flickr stream

The Long-haired Kachina is one of the most pervasive of all kachinas. It is danced from the Rio Grande to the Hopi Mesas in almost the same form. Their purpose is to bring rain, and it is said that they seldom dance without the appearance of a soft gentle rain to help the crops grow. They appear in a group and sing a very melodious song which may be one of the reasons that they are such favorites. They are often used for the Niman Kachina on First Mesa coming with the Kocha Mana. In fact they have danced in late August on First Mesa in direct contradiction to the feeling that only Masau'u can be danced out of season. Probably this was due to the presence of the Tewa people who do not have a closed kachina season. More on flickr

The collection to date. I started building Talavai last weekend in preparation for a show at the Tempe History Museum and then built Palavitkuna and Angwusnasomtaka respectively. I had been thinking about building a kachina for about two years now. I feel that my collection and skill set were finally at the point that I could build a kachina with the accuracy and reverence it deserves. See the whole set and look at each individual kachina for more information.

Excluding the shuttle, about 19 hours. Mostly concurrent. The shuttle took about five hours and was built a few days beforehand. The diorama was built purely as an afterthought to showcase the shuttle. This is my first real attempt at space/sci-fi and I am mostly happy with it. Its a fun genre to build in, I hope it keeps my attention. Well its Customs, so they are looking for contraband or any clandestine activity. In this case, I used the crate of white flowers as discovered contraband. I was thinking spices, but back story really pisses me off. I prefer to let the viewer read the snapshot in time as he sees it. I think this would have been a better pic as a thumbnail or intro...

After an anonymous tip, Customs agents raided a Bounder Class shuttle craft landing at Mountain Station. Full Set

Thanks guys, this was a fun build. To answer the middle leg question, it does move but it does not retract. I am considering a retractable leg for my next hack at this, but we'll see how it goes. Power Functions may be the best way to handle that.

Last week I decided to teach myself how to build spheres and contoured shapes (the football, Mork, and plenty of unphotographed tablescrap). Around 6:30 last Friday night, I thought it would be cool to apply my new knowledge and build R2-D2. I thought it would be even cooler if I could take the model to my LUG meeting today. So, using a voice command R2-D2 as a reference, I sat down around just before 7PM and started building and didn’t stop until just after midnight when I had a 12.5” astro-mech droid sitting on my desk. It’s not movie accurate, but its close enough for me this time around. Bear in mind that this is my VERY FIRST attempt at building anything like this. Given my self-imposed time constraints, available brick and lack of experience, I think it turned out pretty good. I may certainly revisit this project later on and take my time to get a much cooler little droid. Deep Links

I've been experimenting with shapes and contouring. When a ball turned into an egg, I said SHAZBUT! ...and built Mork. The future may the eccentric Orkin in his civilian attire and possible with his friends Mindy and Exidor. I may experiment with new body designs too. more

My contribution to the VV Missing Man for BrickWorld 2010. This will first appear at Phoenix Comicon on Sun, May 30, then it's off! Not being a space builder, I'm not totally comfortable with my 'space skills' and color blocking. All and all, I am happy with it. See more...

Well… here it is. I've posted random bits and pieces of this project as it’s been coming together, but until now, I have avoided sharing its scope with the masses. What you are looking at is an exceptionally small and incomplete portion of a much larger project. I've seen plenty of LEGO bands, but none of them have managed to capture the 'feel' of the moment. The concept here is to authentically capture the mood, energy, and movement of a live show, catch that snapshot of the moment. Other than constantly running out of what I need and waiting for BrickLink orders to trickle in, a major stumbling block is engraving/printing. Apparently logos, etc. may not be printed or engraved on LEGO brick unless it is for a convention, etc. I’ll have to substitute with decals, but that’s just not the route I want to take with this, so I am open to suggestions. The red backdrop may end up turning into a mosaic. My goal is to have this completed and photographed by late summer so I can break it down and haul it up to Seattle in October. There is still much to be done.

I've been kicking around the thought of doing a Cafe Corner Standard building of my own for quite some time now. I finally decided to take some time away from an ongoing project and put this together. For a first attempt at this standard, I'm pretty happy with it. For more pictures, visit my Flickr page

This is a great dio man! I'm not big on the genre in general, but this one kind of makes me want to try my hand at it. Thank you for the inspiration! And in response to the other discussion in this thread. I too have noticed how so many great builds get lost in the masses here. I guess the new guys have to fight their way to the top. No biggie.

Thanks guys, we ALL like shiny things.
