  1. Yes... that's another thing. I always have a few things in mind, even if I have no idea when I'll be able to work on them. To cut down on the effects of shippings costs on small orders, I'll search through the store I'm buying from to find other things, even if it's not related to what I'm working on at the time.
  2. I like using 1x2 bricks instead of 2x4... it seems a closer-to-real size for minifigures. So I went on BL and found someone selling them for just 2.9 cents each... so I ordered thousands (and 1x1s to fill around doors and windows). That's was the start... then it was the occasional order to fill in the blanks, so to speak. I also visit the LEGO store occasionally, and when they have interesting parts I'll get a whole bunch, even if I don't have anything specific in mind at that time.
  3. It's easier with modern LEGO bricks. In fact, the really impressive part of the Modulex MOCs is the fact they pretty much only have basic brick shapes, it's much more limiting and, to me, requires a lot more creativity. From the looks of it, that angled wall is simply resting there and not being "held" by anything, but Polish Guy can correct me if I'm wrong.
  4. I got this set last year and I really love it, so I need to say that I'm really happy for all of you who got one this year without the secondary market mark up to over $100, and make sure you get the bakery this year so we don't have the same problem next year!
  5. tedbeard is wise. LEGO is an expensive hobby, but part of life is knowing what to prioritize. There's about $500 in sets I could buy right now if I wanted to, but they must come after everything else. I've got two kids, too. When I went through college (a computer science major, but I was "in" the college of engineering at my university), LEGO was a popular subject... we'd look at things we found on the internet or in the news and we'd say "wow!" But nobody had any because we were poor college students... yes, I bought computers and peripherals (which were very expensive back then, relatively speaking) and didn't buy LEGO. Now I have enough that I can occasionally indulge myself. I can think of worse hobbies (as can my wife). Put it away if you must, but don't sell it. Even if you don't want to play anymore, you may have kids.
  6. Large green plates (not base plates) are pretty expensive, and I certainly couldn't even order enough from even three or four bricklink stores. I asked because I wondered what people thought and was wondering if other people did it.
  7. Gosh! I don't know why everyone gets all bent out of shape, it was a simple question. I was planning on doing it anyway. But now I have to ask if foam board can be used to make an even brick height.
  8. So that you could put another one on the other side.. but then the question why you wouldn't just use a 3L pin.
  9. The problem isn't getting filler bricks, it's that the castle is already built on base plates, not regular plates, so they won't attach anyway. I do want it to be more solid, too, because it's got several layers of modularity, the one I'm concerned with now is the 16x16 base plates.
  10. The problem is that my structure is on base plates. I could get filler bricks to lift it up, but they don't connect to the bottom of base plates. So I'm wondering if anyone else has used wood boards, planed to the width of a brick, to build up their MOCs. I did a castle, but now want a landscape and want a gradual descent to a shoreline.
  11. Very nice, and to scale, too, as the real one uses narrower gauge tracks... Great job.
  12. The Name of the Wind.
  13. Snake? I thought you were dead. Pretty cool, Plissken... very jungly. I wish I had more forestmen.
  14. Definitely looks like a good plow... even if it's the right size, I'd hate to cut the post off, which is the only way I can see it working... unless I use one of these: or one of these as the minifigure's body, in which case that's how he could "hold" it..... not a bad idea. It might be a bit too big, though... although not any bigger, I think, than that plate. Any idea if the holes near the tip go all the way through? Good way to tie it to the "ox." I am thinking about just using a minifigure axe: , but am not sure how to attach it. I wonder if I have one of those bionicle weapons in my bionicle drawer... I don't have any of the sets it came from, but I have a lot of miscellaneous pieces anyway.
  15. Well... you would know something about 2011, wouldn't you?
  16. So I'm working on my microfigure scale castle and, while I've finished enough pieces to do the outer wall, I'm working on a few other modules. I'm happy with how my horses and the bull/ox/whatever came out (see the pictures), but I'm having problem making it look like the microfigure is plowing the field. The wedge is the plow, of course, and that's the smallest wedge there is. Any suggestions for a better plow? I may just use string to attach the plow to the "ox," but if anyone has any other suggestions about that, too, I'd appreciate it.
  17. Amazon.co.uk has Emerald Night for £99.00 Are you saying MSRP in England is cheaper than that? I'm finding this hard to believe. Edit: (looks on LEGO UK...) so it is... you guys ARE getting ripped, but I rather think you're getting a better deal on EN as opposed to a worse deal on Hogwarts' Express.
  18. Why would TLG care about you adding a middle-man to what they sell you? They don't have to pay a licensing fee for the EN. Besides, the Hogwarts' Express is like $80 in the U.S.... 20% cheaper than the EN. Is it really that different England that HE costs MORE?
  19. Another winner, professor. It is a bit smallish and it would be nice to see the whole classroom with Professor Trelawney droning on about The Grim to Harry, but I can easily picture that as her private space in the tower. Edit: on further review I need to add: I really like the potions bottle!
  20. It's just beautiful. I love the Falcon. I'm wondering if the TIE fighter wings couldn't be more hexagonal (although I guess you'd see studs). I'm also wondering how the Falcon would look with a clear dome cockpit instead of gray... looking on BL it doesn't even look like a clear one exists, though (although the larger 2 brick high one does... but that would just look strange).
  21. Uh oh... looks like the cheerleader's been a bit too cheery with the football team. So... I was searching for "photography" and came across this thread, I was wondering what people use to take pictures. The lighting in my house typical... not good for most digital photography. Using flashes often makes the pictures look terrible. I'd like to make a light box, but don't have a lot of room. Moreover, the castle I'm building now is too big for a light box. So I have one of those display boards: I'd like to get an alternate color (for now I have a light blue roll of paper I can use). I was going to get a couple of clip on lights and rig some kind of diffuser. Then I could put the display board in front of a WIP without having to move it. Was wondering if anyone had any other ideas for photographing their LEGO on the cheap.
  22. Death Eater Battlepacks... minifigs with death eater masks... I love modular castle building, so a modular Hogwarts sounds like a grand idea. Modular style #4 Privet Drive. Modular style 12 Grimmauld Place. Ministry of Magic, with the main hall with the flue networks, hall of prophecies, offices, tribunal, department of mysteries... the room with the veil.
  23. I just bought one (presumably) from Amazon.com at MSRP (which is, in fact, $60, according to Peeron). I say presumably because I'll have to have it in hand before I can say I definitely got one for that price. There is another thread in the finds/deals section of EB... it's been appearing sporadically at Amazon, from Amazon (not a third party) for MSRP. It's been like that for the past few days, apparently, it appears for 15 minutes to an hour or so before disappearing. What does that say about Target? I don't know... I've seen it listed at Toys R Us, too (but not in stock). I don't know anything official, but since LEGO has the new one available on their website (but not for sale or even preorder, but you can put it on your wishlist), but they DO NOT have the old one, I'd have to say it's gone, as far as TLG is concerned. They might possibly have had some inventory left over they sent to some companies, but even that seems unlikely as they were listed as "sold out" on the website last Christmas. Last night I posted I was able to order one at MSRP, as did a number of people at FBTB.net... you need to be quick, though, and one guy said he'd been refreshing his browser all day waiting for it. Within minutes after me making that post, the deal was gone. He's in Germany. Europeans are already enjoying Series 2 minifigs, too. People in other countries will find that laughable... not only are sets often cheaper here, we probably get more sets than any other country. It's true that they've misjudged us on collectible minifigures and other Christmas sets... people get very annoyed that we only had city Advent calendars while everyone else was getting other themes, but we've had all the other holiday stuff, as far as I'm aware... the train, the toy shop...
  24. I used to use other names, but lately (the past couple of years), as an old fogey, I decided to just use my name and not hide behind internet anonymity. Yes, I know, I'm no fun.
  25. It's quite simple, really... G.T. stands for "Great..." and something that begins with a "T."
