I agree with that. Release the engine and tender only and offer the carriage as a seperate entity. Then if you don't want the coach, and make your own - you can and keeps the price down. But if you want to, buy the engine and one or 10 coaches as well. Also, I think the PF is rubbish and the battery pack/wires and the new rubbish track is, well rubbish. It makes so much noise, slow, and I don't think the lego plastic bushes where everything runs will last very long, compared to a 9v motor unit.

Did this mod a while ago, by far the best. Two motors in the carriage, pushing the loco. Goes well.

Here's a new one...

It really annoys me that Lego never seems to push a product. There is scope for people to add extra coaches to the EN, but why don't they (Lego) release just the carriage set? Won't be hard, as all you need is a box, as the instructions are already done. The Enlighten Trains, you can order any amount of each. I have now a whole scale setup of the Oxford Train here. C'mon Lego, pull your socks up! I don't know...

Its not a small operation. I reckon they have more kits than Lego do at the moment, and other themes as well, which Lego have not gone into yet.
-
The problem is that Lego don't produce these sets now, and getting the Santa Fe, for example is nigh impossible. Also they've got a couple new designs which Lego never brought out. The problem with the Lego Group, is they are very slow to bring some designs to their full potential. Take the Emerald Express. Why don't they just sell the carriage as a separate kit? This train needs more than one carriage, say 5 or 6 plus a sleeper car, so one has to but two or three Emerald kits just for the carriage and sell the engine/tender. I say good luck to them and do fancy then dark coloured engine/carriage kits.

I know it's not Lego, but this company looks like they bought the dies from the Lego discontinued range. Has anybody bought them and what is the quality like, compared to original Lego. I normally don't buy non-Lego, but unfortunetly Lego never really have pushed the Train range well, but this company looks like a promising future... http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/lots-of-train-series...=item3ca7cf3912

Getting started in LEGO Trains - What to buy?
Brickimad replied to MrTools's topic in LEGO Train Tech
I'd recommend to keep checking eBay. ok trains do go for alot of money, but I managed to get hold of a Metroliner with box, oval of track for £40 (about £60 USD). and managed to obtain some other items quite cheap... I think motors are going for $25.- 191 replies

I've found with most of the 9v series that they are too light. The old 12v used a heavier motor and 2 ballast weights which kept the train on the track and helped conductivity with the power rail. The 9v is okay at slower speeds, but can derail or over-run points. The solution to this is obvious - use the old 12v weights from the old sets - also I've been buying weights from Ebay - and its made a difference. The worst 9v train is the crocodile, it's a B*&£er, two swivelling ends and light, so there now are weights in both ends - now it goes well. The only train which doesn't need it is the rc trains - as they have heavy batteries in them and find that it can go full speed round and over bends without derailing - unless you just use the engine - and its too fast anyway!

Exclusive Train 10194 Emerald Night (Exclusive 2009)
Brickimad replied to der seb's topic in LEGO Train Tech
Might as well post pictures of my rolling stock. This is the 9V collection, have twice as many 12V, so this table is too small. Included are: 2 Metroliners + 1 carriage + 1 engine, Emerald Night, Crocodile train, Steam train x2 with each caboose and coal tender. Rc ICe with extra carriage; diesel engine, tram engine; couple of hoppers, flatbed. I've got more upstairs in the 9v range, but these are carriages pulled by 12V system. All the engines have 9v motors in them, except the metroliners, where each engine on end have motors and lights. lights as well on the green engine, ICE and lights in cab of one of the Metroliners.- 559 replies

I'm quite impressed with your layout, Lego Trains come as a 2nd hobby, as one room in my house is a computer room, the other is a Workshop for Radio Controlled Aeroplanes, where I build, the other main bedroom is well, the bedroom! (with a few aeroplanes dotted around, including filling the walk-in closet!) Luckly the attic is a good size and have been gradually been converting it by adding floor, power and lighting, but ran out of space just for the 12V! The 9v sometimes get laid out in the sitting room, but even then its still tight. I've got about 20 12v motors and 16 9v electric, and 2 9v battery motors, with a few 4.5v motors scattered around. Looks like the problem you had with you layout is the wiring. What I did, before the floor went down, I put a multi-core cable terminating at various points to terminal blocks - labeled. So when I needed power or control, I just connect it and go.

Looking at the flexible tracks, I absolutely hate it! Apart from the asthetics, not very stable. Sort of going into Duplo area - making it easier. Give me the 12v and 9v track anyday.
-
Also the early Minifigs had no arms! We're luckly they didn't leave them off this time! LOL
-
I wonder how many people still use the 12v system? I think it was the best system out, especially the remote points, signals,de-couplers and of course the automated level crossing. Pity the 9v didn't employ the remote points, especially on larger layouts - as you have to manually switch over - annoying...

I've created a "Photobucket" account and managing to hotlink to that, so that's sorted! Thanks

Exclusive Train 10194 Emerald Night (Exclusive 2009)
Brickimad replied to der seb's topic in LEGO Train Tech
On the carriage, I've added a 9V motor, so the carriage, in effect driving the train, wierd, but it works and does not look far out of place... This the 9V conversion. The motors on the Carriage, which drives the train- 559 replies

Thanks. As you are the Moderator, I've got a couple of questions: I can't upload any more photos, as 100k per pic is a bit low and even after a couple of uploads, I can only upload another 14.12k more - not enough. My name is Paul, and will update my profile, as and when. 2. How do I include my name in my profile?

I've got mine, and put a 9V motor under the carriage, runs well and doesn't derail, helped by adding the old 12v weight into the loco(even though its quite heavy anyway). Not totally functional scale, but at least it worked. Helped by modifing the other bogey, to look similer
-
To tell you the truth, I'm not impressed with the new flexible track, looks wierd, not scale at all and am not sure it its compatable with the 9v/rc tracks. Also people say it's noisy and unstable at speed. I won't be bothering with it. My new Emerald Night runs on 9V track.
-
I hope Lego Make seperate matching carriage for the Emerald Night. Especially a Dining Car, Sleeper car and Post Car. ALso having a couple more passenger coaches labeled "Second Class" and "Third Class". My first one at the moment is First class and you do get Second and Third class stickers on the sheet. Can't wait

Exclusive Train 10194 Emerald Night (Exclusive 2009)
Brickimad replied to der seb's topic in LEGO Train Tech
Am also thinking of adding a second tender and using a 9V motor in it. By the way you sometimes can get replacement 9V motors of both types of ebay. Bought 2 quite cheap and run well...- 559 replies
