Classic product lines such as LEGO® City and LEGO Star Wars remain the bestsellers – but there have been improvements in virtually all product lines. The new play theme LEGO Power Miners got off to a very successful start, with sales well ahead of expectations. The improved sales picture is recorded on almost all markets, with especially the North American and East and Central European markets reporting big increases on first half sales in 2008. At the same time, the LEGO Group’s direct sales to consumers via its own brand retail stores plus internet and mail order sales increased considerably during the six month period. Declining market The total global toy market declined somewhat during the first half of the year. The total figure, however, represents significant regional differences – English speaking markets reported a decline, while most European toy markets grew during the period. The LEGO Group achieved double digit growth rates in consumer sales on almost all markets. The company’s market share thus increased. At the end of the first half year the Group’s equity was DKK 1,740m compared with DKK 1,049m at the end of the corresponding period in 2008. It is particularly pleasing to note the continued strong growth in our classic product lines. As the bulk of toy sales occur during the last few months of the year, considerable uncertainty remains about the full year result. But based on the fine results achieved in the first half of the year, we are optimistic with regard to prospects for the remainder of 2009.” Increased investment in capacity In the light of recent years’ growth in sales and expectations of sustained growth in the years ahead, the LEGO Group will make a number of investments in 2009 to increase its capacity. Steps were taken during the first half of the year to expand moulding capacity. New injection moulding machines were installed in Denmark, Hungary and Mexico. What a perfect combo — LEGO and Disney. It has just been announced that LEGO and Disney will team up next year. Toy Story, Cars and Prince of Persia all will get a LEGO make over. Toy Story Children’s imaginations will go “To infinity and beyond” when, beginning in 2010, they will be able to re-create the adventures of Buzz Lightyear and Woody with LEGO toys inspired by the Toy Story franchise. Toy Story-themed construction sets will be available on both LEGO DUPLO and LEGO System platforms, building the adventure and fun for children ages 2-12. LEGO System products based on Toy Story and Toy Story 2 will launch in January 2010, to be followed in May by construction sets based on the new animated feature, Toy Story 3, scheduled to hit theaters in Disney Digital 3D June 2010. Cars Lightning McQueen will rev his engine at the starting line of a DUPLO portfolio that will have young builders creating and exploring the high-octane world of the Cars franchise. The Cars-themed LEGO DUPLO line will feature iconic scenes from Radiator Springs and the Piston Cup Championship raceway and will feature favorite Cars characters like McQueen, Mater and Sally. Cars-themed LEGO DUPLO products are scheduled to launch in June 2010. Prince of Persia A line of LEGO System construction toys based on Walt Disney Pictures’ and Jerry Bruckheimer Films’ Prince of Persia: Sands of Time, produced by Jerry Bruckheimer, directed by Mike Newell and scheduled to release in May 2010 is also in development. The film, based on the best-selling video game franchise of the same name, stars Jake Gyllenhaal, Ben Kingsley, Alfred Molina and Gemma Arterton in an epic tale of Prince Dastan’s struggle to stop an evil ruler from unleashing a sandstorm that could destroy the world. Prince of Persia-themed LEGO products are scheduled to launch in April 2010.
