  1. Wow, even though it's neat and rare 30 bucks is crazy. It would be much cheaper to just paint one of the black ones. Still, it's a neat find.
  2. Those doors on the side don't line up perfectly for me either, but it's a minor problem on an otherwise great set. I like the stickers, but I'm always opposed to using them in case I want to reuse the parts on a future MOC. As an aside, my local Target had all the Clone Wars legos at 10% off until the end of the day. That makes this beast only $107.99! I didn't check online, but it's possible there's a similar sale.
  3. These are incredible. I think the stadium is great, but the water cube is truly breath taking. Did anyone else see the Ancient Greek photo with the Storm Trooper slave drivers?
  4. I really like the exterior on this. The yellow is definitely quite striking, and in my humble opinion could use something to help break it up. I'm definitely no expert though, but I think if all the 'raised' details like the arches were kept yellow while the recessed details were white it would be striking. It looks like you have used tan and it seems to be washed out by the yellow. Then again it could be much easier to pick up in person. In either case excellent job!
  5. I really like this. I'm always interested in seeing how other people build castle walls and gates. They give me so many ideas for my own work. So, is this simply a single scene or does it fit into a large collection of castle scenes that fit together to form one gigantic castle?
  6. I think these are insanely over priced even at $75. The two old sets are still available at S@H and every story I've been to with a Lego section. The clones are nice, but if TLG thinks they are worth the extra $45 they are crazy. I expect the troop packs to come out next year around the 10 to 15 dollar price point and include at least 3 clones. For the $75 spent on this at Comic Con you could have both of the droid sets and probably 3 of the troop packs when they're released. I can understand the completist need to have this, but it just seems like such a rip.
  7. This is for removing dust from old sets... And this is for removing dust and paint from old sets....and the walls....and the driveway I've used those static feather dusters for display pieces. Hitting them once a week or so helps prevent stubborn dust buildup. Typically I just surrender to the new colorations of pieces once the dust has gotten too stuck on. I'm always needing support pieces for holding up part, thus these off-color ones typically get used in non-visible situations.
  8. I liked this article. It's a nice primer for someone wanting to build a well balanced table town. I especially like the tips for connecting baseplates. I never even thought about using trees and benches and random stuff like that to connect my plates. I've been trying to hide connections under walls and stuff.
  9. This is an excellent build. I'm a huge fan of the bi-ped walkers from SW and own at least two of every one released by Lego. This is by far the best one I've ever come across. Can it fit more than one figure inside?
  10. These are very nice and far more detailed then what I've been able to build. It looks like your neighborhood is coming along nicely. One question I do have is why you didn't build directly on the baseplates. Is this something that is standard? Being new to the city/town genre I haven't been able to pick up on all the standards of construction.
  11. Considering how many shops are on Bricklink I'd just move on to the next guy. Unless that shop happens to sell lots of stuff you need at a cheap price I'm sure there's someone else with comparable inventory and prices.
  12. This is definitely a nice set, and for the price the figure selection is excellent. I agree that the rubberband mechanism is weak, but I've found that to be pretty universal when Lego tries to use rubber bands to turn things. For wings and catapults and spring mecanisms they are great, but on wheels they are too slick to work perfectly. I think the lack of weapons is a bit sad as well. Even one more sword and a single headed axe for the dwarf would've been perfect.
  13. This really does look like a great set, but if it's pushing 100 dollars US it's gonna be a stretch. With only 2 figures and 500 pieces I would put it in the 60 to 70 dollar range at most and would hope it's much cheaper. Still, the set looks very solid. It might end up being a long term display piece if it does turn out as nice as the Gunship.
  14. This thing looks amazing. I'm going to have to figure out a way to add one of these to my lego chess set collection. I guess it's prebuilt though. I was kind of hoping that an expensive set like this would let you actually build it to get some joy out of it.
  15. I"ve never been one to stand out from a crowd, so I've never really gone for my own niche. If anything, I enjoy the modular designs portrayed in the Cafe Corner line of sets, and I've been trying to build my own fantasy version. I have a very simple building style(ie not ornate ), but it has allowed me to design a full range of minifig castle wall sections. The neat part is that the modularity of the walls extends to the buildings as well. Each building can be plugged into its neighbor or into the wall sections to create a truly unique city. It all started when I was asked to GM a pencil and paper RPG for friends and I wanted to give them an idea of what the buildings they were in looked like. Then, like all my projects, it just kept getting bigger and bigger. Alas, it has all been torn down, due to buying a home and moving, except a short section of wall and a gatehouse that I plan to incorporate into a new fortress MOC I'm working on.(a few of the buildings survived as well) Not really niche though.
  16. I think the KK sets suffered from a convergence of events that had much of the AFOL community in a tizzy. It used the new color formulations and lots of it. The bley was really bright compared to the older formulation, and this wasn't helped at all by the rainbow knights idea. This was also when Lego was really in the height of there movie backdrop castle designs. Most of the KK sets were empty framework buildings with jumbo wall pieces. The last problem(for me) was that the sets seemed to focus more on playability then build. There were lots of moving parts and catapults(even on the horses) and this left the build very scattered. All that being said, I liked the castle sets of that age for their variety if nothing else. I own every set from that line(well not the bionicle things) and I really like the variety of armor and weapons I now have available. The later series even had some really neat armor with chainmail details that looks great on a champion figure leading a squad of soldiers. They bring to mind the knights of the round table, and help to separate the commanding figures from the rank and file. Without the figures though, these sets weren't very spectacular.
  17. Very nice review. I finished building mine on Sunday, and I'd like to add a couple things to this discussion. 1. The bike doesn't fit well into the back. Either the door doesn't shut completely or the bike is lifted slightly off the 'ground' with the door completely shut. No big deal since I won't be storing the bike inside. 2. The doors are great, but they don't shut perfectly. It's a minor gripe, but I add it for completeness. 3. I agree on the horrid look of the skirt. I spent 20 minutes hunting for the standard plastic slope thinking I'd been shorted a piece only to have it dawn on me that it might be in the little white box. Not very pretty IMHO. 4. I got 2 complete sets of clone gear, 4 pistols and 4 of the curved saber handles. That's a nice pile of extras. 5. The canopies are all headaches to open correctly. It's probably mostly due to the newness of the pieces. With use they'll get easier to open. 6. I can't stand the flick fire missles, but that's just me. 7(and last, whew). This thing has the swooshability of an anvil.
  18. I seem to recall the set being about 100 dollars brand new, so if you can find it for that now it is well worth it. The steering was a bit goofy for me, which detracts from the overall swooshability(vroomability? ). Other then that it was an enjoyable set. I'm actually hoping they'll release a new version for the CW.
  19. Sorting by piece type and not color is definitely the way to go. It's tons easier to find that red 1x6 in a container of 1x6s then to find it in a container of red bricks. I use sterilite drawers for the larger piles of pieces(bricks, slopes etc) and these come in all shapes and sizes. It is also great when you have a need for a lot of one type of brick because the drawers are removeable. For smaller bits I use plastic racks designed to hold screws and nails and other various small bits of hardware. They tend to come in 20+ drawer configurations with drawer dividers for even more holding power, and they tend to run about 10 to 20 bucks each.
  20. Empty boxes is quite strange, but if it works then we're all winners. I've seen tags used for electronics and I know TRU used to use them for large items, but now that is left to the 'old style' TRUs. To get off subject a bit, I'm all for automated checkout lines, but I always use the cashier. It doesn't cost any more money and it keeps someone in a job.
  21. This sounds very similar to the first one. I'm glad I'm saving this one till later in my purchasing cycle. All the SW walkers have a skeletal fram with almost nothing inside. It's very disappointing, but I guess filling them in would up the piece count considerably. Does this beast have any good handholds for picking it up? I seem to recall a handle or something coming out of the top in the pre-release pics.
  22. Well yeah, but I also watch sports. I love how Lego releases new waves right before Football(and Football) season starts. That means I can wake up early on the weekends and catch an EPL game or two before watching some good old American Throwball. All the while I'm working on a MOC or a recent release. I love this and still use the giant tub technique for MOC building, but with large sets like the RGS I enjoy having things broken into workable sections.
  23. The sad part is that it took longer to type then if I'd spelled it correctly. Things are only worth as much as someone is willing to pay and it's easily possible that someone with more money then sense wanted only the figures and not the accompanying legos. What I really hope happens is that later in the Clone Wars run(considering the show is supposed to run for 4 years or so) we'll see cheaper sets with all these figures.
  24. I'm not surprised to see TRU has higher prices. It's the level of increase that is amazing. It looks to be a flat 10 dollars across the board. If you bought every set at TRU it would cost you so much more then buying at your local Target or Walmart(or even S@H with shipping). What's sad is that you could buy the 10 dollar exclusive fig and then your legos at another store and break even. I'm used to seeing TRU at 2 or 3 dollars higher and I'm often willing to pay that for the good selection and the lack of dealing with the Walmart crowd, but 10 dollars per set is unthinkable. Hooray for the local Tarjay that had the RGS in stock last night at regular retail price.
  25. Hmm, 2 by 9 eh? That's actually doable I think. I lucked into a huge sale on 32x32 baseplates at Walmart after Xmas last year. 2 dollars each! I bought them out and was planning a huge expansion to Puppet's Cove, but if you looked at my table it would appear a large Sci-Fi/Fantasy convention is taking place on a large grassy field. I'll have to shoo these rabble rousers away so construction can begin. Are most of your buildings built on 32x32 plates?
