OoC: Very silly question I feel I have to ask in a sci-fi setting: do we have each other's phone numbers? Merei tries the latch above her, ensuring it is unlocked. She isn't stupid enough to charge ahead without back-up... unless the man seems to be in serious and imminent danger. Which he might be! She tries to use insight to gauge how immediate the very clear danger he is in is.

Heroica: Glory Amongst The Stars - Rules & FAQ
Zepher replied to Waterbrick Down's topic in Heroica! The RPG!
Basically proficiency adds more dice (more chances to succeed, but not guaranteed) whereas items add 1 automatically succeeded die roll (as if an additional die had been rolled and had been a 4-6). Yes? -
“Pst. Kirwin.” Merei looks up from where she is crouched on the floor, looking at the tunnel. “I am going to do something foolish now. Please cover for me, and if I do not return, make some rescue attempt.” She begins to crawl through the tunnel, trying to pay careful attention so as not to wander directly into anything dangerous or disgusting.

Heroica: Glory Amongst The Stars - General Discussion
Zepher replied to Waterbrick Down's topic in Heroica! The RPG!
I know we've said it ad nauseum, but since we're reaching the climax I'll repeat: I'm really enjoying the vibe of the Mission 4 crew! Haven't done a lot of sharing or asking each other questions, but it's a real jovial and diverse team who clearly has each other's backs. -
Merei nods to Kirwin, keeping her deep roiling voice low. "Exactly what I was going to suggest, Kirwin. You handle the door. Let me know if you need any help. We will need to be quick," she glances over at Bers loudly dropping Sal and Mel's names, "he is doing the right thing, warning them. But I don't know how they will take it." She points through the window. "You may after all have a chance to test your driving skills. That seems to be our speeder. Let me know when you have the door open." Merei tries the double doored hatch next to the light, seeing if it will open, and checking its contents if it does. "Be warned, as well. There is something larger and gray in there."

While approaching directly doesn’t seem exactly like the stealth Bers previously advocated, Merei prefers it, personally, and so doesn’t say anything to stop her friend. She does however attempt to stealthily peel around the side of the tower while they approach, both hoping to stay within range should he need support and to get a peek into the windows and doodads on the wall to the right.

I was going to say this almost word-for-word hahaha. "I am in agreement with Yissam♥. My personal forte isn't sneaking - it feels dishonest, and in this particular case, while Carvrac is dangerous, we are arriving with a warning. A genuine warning, that they must receive quickly. That being said, it might be wiser to sneak to begin with, if only to get a better lay of the land. I too can help with the security systems. Then, if we feel it is smart, we can approach Carvrac and deliver our warning, or, if things go poorly, we can job into action and defend them against our sewn enemy."

Heroica: Glory Amongst The Stars - General Discussion

That was my understanding too. Engineering is like fixing a car's broken axel, but tech would be fixing the wiring that makes the radio keep playing randomly. Coding is the other similar one, but I think the distinction there is moving from hardware to software. Also really appreciating the tough battles you're throwing, still, WBD. Definitely makes people learn the system quick! I think the impulse is to attack, but I like that there are boost, defense, and even flee options that are equally useful. Does make the battle feel diverse, and again, I think as CP builds up a little bit we'll start to see people really specialize (as you said in the FAQ, Yelena and Zaria are pretty close hitters at this point, but that probably won't be true depending what paths they pursue). -
OoC: 1) You my have been totally clear that the warehouses are different places, maybe I just rammed them together in my head by accident. 2) As I said, my meditate was actually an illegal action - I assumed that I didn't need it prepped to use. So basically I never took it, and my earlier meditation works under the current rules, but not the former. "Thank you for the directions, Uliz. I would highly recommend you pay careful attention to what happened here today. If it is your duty to protect those in the building, you have failed." Merei says this as kindly as she can before leaving.

I want to be clear in that I wasn't advocating in cutting anything in particular just yet. Again, I've not been part of the brainstorming, and a lot of the classes seem super cool. I just was suggesting taking a little more time to observe how battles/challenges/puzzles/social situations actually run, and then modifying classes to fill the observed niches. Another idea I've had, and again just spit-balling because, again, was not part of the pre-thinking. Organizing classes around a single proficiency might be an interesting way to limit them/define what they are meant to do. I know that'd originally mean some re-aligning and reshuffling of abilities, and understand the want for people with different proficiency builds to have access to the same class & people with the same proficiency build to have access to different classes. But if we lower the threshold slightly, that might mean people would still have access to a few classes after a while, and would solve therefore address the above concern. Just a thought, even if it's just a kernel of one we could build off.
-
"No, Uliz, we were not responsible. You might be though. My understanding is that you are responsible for the safety of the tenants in this building. One had their hand cut off during your watch, by an assassin who snuck into their room. That same assassin is targeting people on the first floor of this very same building. Carvrac. Floor one warehouse. Will you let them know that we are coming to assist them?"

Heroica: Glory Amongst The Stars - Rules & FAQ
Zepher replied to Waterbrick Down's topic in Heroica! The RPG!
I’m of the opinion that you rule with the idea that everyone will treat things fairly and try to play the game, not game the system. If you see abuse you can refine, but I don’t think you need to pre-plan for it if you are in a trustworthy community. The relatively low 1-3 CP reward cap should make it pretty difficult to abuse too dramatically anyway. -
Heroica: Glory Amongst The Stars - Rules & FAQ
Zepher replied to Waterbrick Down's topic in Heroica! The RPG!
I'd like to suggest another minor rules tweak: I think quests should, inherently, give out 1-3 CP upon completion (depending on the length of the quest). I think that'd be a nice fun bonus to award, and would balance out quests that are a little longer (Boreal Express, for example, is running long and is mostly roleplay and mystery based so far, and that rocks, but the CP rewarded so far has only been 1, I believe). I like that progression will be relatively slow in this game - it makes it so newer players and older players can easily be on the same quest for a much longer time, and makes the math of everything much easier, but I'm thinking it might be mighty slow. Look at the classes, which require 5 proficiency. Assuming you start with one, you'd still need 2+3+4+5=14 CP to unlock a class, which looks like it'd take, at the current rate, well over a year... and that's assuming you rush only that proficiency and put no energy into anything else. So: my proposal I think will not be rule shattering, but just a little extra fun bonus. -
I hate to be a wet blanket on this, but I think it'll be a lot easier to start to define these classes as we get a little closer to having the proficiency needed to play as them. Right now we have ~35 classes. Heroica has only 16 players total, right now, so even assuming no overlap, that's 20 classes that get no play. I think it might actually be better to go in the other direction, whittling things down a little, combining "like" classes and plucking the best from each of them. I know it's fun to brainstorm, but I feel like each class should be able to really succinctly perform something others cannot, and what "roles" need to be filled or enhanced will become more obvious after ten or so quests. I know that's a real killjoy answer, especially as someone who has not been an active part of the brainstorming, but it's just my two-cents.

"Well done, Kirwin! I suppose all that is left for us to do is to go back down and attempt to figure a way into the warehouse. As my friend said, Sid, best of luck to you." Merei joins the others in descending. "Uliz can help us. We could explain the situation to him. He seems to value his clients' safety."

"That's our direction then," Merei says, glancing over at the computer as Kirwin and Bers talk about the assailant. "Would the Wings of Fury be able to defend themselves against this... sewnbag, or are they in imminent danger? How can you get us to them quickly? A secret entrance? A password we can offer?"

Heroica: Glory Amongst The Stars - General Discussion
Zepher replied to Waterbrick Down's topic in Heroica! The RPG!
Hahaha the BBEG just trolling in the comments section. And all Yissam♥‘s followers calling them out like “this is clearly the person you’re after!!!”. And Yisssm♥ absolutely not reading the chat. -
Seeing Yissam turn to magic, Merei attempts to determine if a healing spell will be of any actual use in this situation, or if the wound is too grievous.

It doesn't have to be this quest, or the next, or the next, but eventually some villain will absolutely have to reveal they've been watching the party's progress on live stream for the entire quest. And then I sincerely hope Yissam♥ learns nothing from the moment, and the exact same thing happens again. EDIT: Also, hope everyone in the US is doing well with the Ida fall out! -
"Oh, dear." Merei glances over at Yissam♥ and subtly nudges her AV Rig so it isn't pointed at Sid, if just for a moment - not wanting to dictating the other's moves but also allowing him a moment of grace, and her a moment of decision. "This looks like a bad scene. My name is Merei. You won a contest. Please tell us what happened. Here, let me help you." Merei walks over to the dwarf and helps steady her hand, though, no good at medicine, does not actually inject the shot. She leans in to Sid. "You and I have business, but this is more pressing. Where is the assailant? Did they... did they go down the trellis?" Merei cannot get her mind off the damn trellis.

OoC: If you don't hear from me for about 24 hours, unless it's like deeply plot important, you can always feel free to move on! "One more question, Uliz, before we are truly out of your hair..." Merei says, realizing neither she nor Uliz actually have hair. She stands in the elevator's doorway, so the doors can't close. "We saw a camera outside the building. Does that belong to you? Or do different residents monitor the front?"

After waving at Yissam♥'s camera, and after seeing Uliz turn around, Merei lowers her voice, standing close to her friends. "Yissam♥, I appreciate the plan, both in style, execution, and results, up until exactly this point. But I am concerned with how Sid will respond, given that Sid isn't actually expecting us as guests. Do you think you will be able to continue to bluff your way in with them? I'm afraid I will come off as overly infatuated with the trellis and climbing, but I'm nervous if we don't climb up we may discover that he's climbing down and out to safety. Or at the very least, we should keep an eye on it, even if we don't climb. Though I suppose if they have a speeder, they could just fly away..." Merei begins muttering to herself. "No. This is why we don't deal with hypotheticals. There is a trellis. There is a speeder. We are being announced. We cannot imagine what will happen until we see it." She gives Yissam♥ a thumbs up. "Carry on. See if Sid will invite a famous streamer, and co-stars, up."

@Duvors I sort of only skimmed mission 2 & 3, so following the opening of 5 is my personal introduction to Enson! I'm really enjoying him, with his good nature and reserved official manner. Just seems really charming, and I really like the way his proficiencies tell a story about him, as well as his selected spells.
