One of the main toy retailers here in Ireland, Smyth's Toys, has some of the 2008 Castle Sets now up on their online catalogue Lego section here, including ones not yet on S@H. They won't be available till 10 March though. The interesting thing for those outside Ireland may be the prices, as Smyth's is usually RRP/S@H price. Hi there. Another recruit. I've come here by way of classic castle, where I've been for some time. I left my Dark Ages around Christmas 06 thanks to a wonderous experience of Munich at Christmas-time, including fantastic toy departments in department stores, with great Lego City vehicle sets like the days of old, and huge amazing Lego dioramas and train layouts. I'm currently working on my first proper AFOL MOC, a rock island fortress (I did make some custom train models from the Hobby Train over Christmas too, but solely using parts from that set). My Lego interests in order are Castle, City/Town and Space. I also have most of the Western theme which I consider pretty neat, and Ninja. I also have many Harry Potter sets because I a) like the books, b) like some of the sets, c) like the brick selection, minifigs and parts and d) got them cheap on ebay. In Castle, my favorites are: Lion Knights (the axe crests), Robin Hood, Black Falcons, Black Knights, Dragon Knights. I don't care much for the Royal Knights or the Bat Lord ones, and I really don't like the KK ones. In City: I actually like the recent sets more than many older ones, though some old sets are favorites liek the Restaurant, Pizzaria, Vacation Hideaway. In Space: M-Tron, Black Tron II, Space Police II, Ice Planet, Spyrian are my favorites. I do like classic Space too. I intend to get some UFO sets in the future, and I've no opposition to Insectoids. I'm not that pushed about Mars Mission. I don't like Fleshies, but I'll still get sets with them and use them alongside yellow guys (just ignore the colour difference). I think that's enough info to be going on with!

I don't like sets being "stretched" using "<insert that tiresome argument>" pieces; you know, like too little butter over too much toast. But I'm not against larger parts per-se, most of them are perfectly versatile, and it's fine for them to be in sets as long as lots of smaller parts are also used. 1x pillars are an example. Sure a bunch of 1x1s can be used instead and can be combined in more ways, but the fact remains that such pillar bricks are more useful than a stack of 1x1s in other circumstances. BURPs are great too for large rockfaces. It's merely an issue if a set is not enough else stretched around a BURP or two. Plenty of large parts are quite longstanding, like castle walls. So it is not a recent Lego phenomenon to use such large parts, and isn't a "dumbing down" thing either. No, the issue in my eyes is more the problem of Lego sets using lots of large parts to try and look bigger than they really are; you end up with a poor-looking set that doesn't have a good mix of different bricks sizes, including small and medium, for adding to ones collection.

Very nice model! I'd really like it. However, with an order for Town Plan, Dwarves Mine and a couple other sets kicking off the year, and more Castle sets and others to come, I'm not sure I'll be able to fit this one in. I do like the colours, as well as the building style for the model. I'm not a fan of insisting on smooth surfaces everywhere on Lego models. That's just not Lego-ish if you know what I mean, although it's perfectly good style for use in some circumstances.
