What sets would you say are in the same league as the Medieval Market Village? That is, if I wanted a tableau that included MMV and 2-3 other sets, what sets could I choose that wouldn’t look bad in contrast to the amazing MMV? I have some thoughts, but I thought I would throw it out there and see what you guys think.

Well, assuming that An Unexpected Gathering is NOT the flagship set of the wave, what do you guys think WILL be? Personally, I would hope for Rivendell as the flagship set, and for there to be a smaller White Council set. I wouldn’t expect a Lothlórien or Dol Guldur set to be the flagship, since they aren’t even in the book at all. But since they will doubtlessly feature in the movie, I wouldn’t be surprised to see a big set for one or the other. I really doubt it will be the hall of the Great Goblin. Honestly, if I were TLG, I would tend to shy away from “underground” sets other than Moria.

I definitely believe the “other sets” posted on spielwaren-kontor24.de are fake/speculation. I think it’s irresponsible that they have been put on Brickipedia as fact. After all, it has already been proven that they had the wrong name for set 70003 — they had it as “Bag End” but it turns out it’s “An Unexpected Gathering”). (That said, if they ARE real, I suggest “Rätsel um den Ring” would be translated “Riddles of the Ring” rather than “Mystery of the Ring.” But I don’t think they’re real.)

It seems that new threads in this forum dedicated to speculation about future sets in general keep getting closed or merged with this one. I’m not questioning any moderator decision, I’m just curious: Would it be inappropriate to have a thread dedicated specifically to future set 79003 An Unexpected Gathering? I’ve seen similar threads before. Thanks.

Have you guys seen the new Rancor Pit set that can be added below Jabba’s Palace? I wonder if we could ever have a second set that could be added on underneath Bag End, maybe called Bagshot Row, which would allow you to work towards a more complete Hobbiton Hill. Just a thought; maybe it could incorporate elements from Bilbo’s Birthday Party (from the beginning of Fellowship).

I don’t like how Bofur lacks a beard piece. I hope most of them get a beard piece. I’m replacing all heads with old fashioned yellow smileys, so printed beards don’t help. I may have to track down some 852702 Dwarfs Battle Packs after all. Though really I’m going want a bunch of white beards. Hmm…

Ah, we had most of the Castle boats, but this one was my favorite, easily!

LOL. Respect? You know, I’m new here, but I imagined it’s safe to (mildly!) criticize commercially sold LEGO sets here without receiving retaliation in the form of personal attacks. Moderator? No, I have opined since the beginning of June that the Eomer figure can be used as a generic Rider of Rohan. The limit is not my imagination; the limit is my pocketbook. One would have to spend $90 in order to end up with “extra Eomer figs.” That on top of $130 for the actual Helm’s Deep set. A child doesn’t have the option of acquiring multiple sets, eBaying, etc. So I would say that’s a reasonable criticism.

His belly covers his whole torso. IMO, it’s Photoshopped, so it’s a little hard to tell how it will really look.

Based on what? MMV obviously does quite well.

All I’m saying is it would have been nice to have some regular Rohan Soldiers to man Helm’s Deep. As it is, Uruk-hai Army is basically a non-optional add-on to me. *shrug*

That’s an interesting concept, but in The Lord of the Rings Gloin states that Dwalin is still in Erebor.

I too am having a hard time trying to think of sets as “scenes.” When I was a kid, we would play out all kinds of stories with our sets. The Falcon Knights always started in the Knight’s Castle, the Crusaders always started in the King’s Castle, and the Forestmen always started in their hideouts. The story possibilities were limitless. The King’s Castle naturally came with the 12 soldiers who lived there. It’s REALLY strange to me that the Hornburg set comes with NONE of the soldiers who actually live there. So you really can only recreate that one scene (inadequately… no Rohirrim, no Dunlendings, no Huorns), rather than any of the other possible scenes in the entire history and alternate history of the Third Age and Fourth Age. But maybe I’m the only one who “roleplayed” with his Lego?

Dori is the strongest of the bunch, a decent fellow. He rescues Bilbo in Goblin-town, and thereafter Thorin considers it Dori’s job to carry Bilbo or rescue him any time he’s in trouble. Balin starts the story as simply the group’s look-out man. His importance increases after Thorin’s capture when Balin automatically becomes the leader because he is the second oldest Dwarf in Thorin & Company (178). Thorin, of course, is the oldest (195). They are the only ones who can remember Smaug’s attack on the Lonely Mountain, and Roäc the Raven remembers them. Balin returns to visit Bilbo at the end of the story. He is probably Bilbo’s best friend among the Dwarves. Dwalin is perhaps notable for his dark green cloak and hood, of which he has an extra set that he lends Bilbo at the beginning of the story (which is what Bilbo wears for the whole story). Mostly, rhyming names indicate brothers. IIRC, Bofur and Bombur are brothers, and Bifur is their cousin. They are the only ones who are said to be not of Durin’s line (perhaps descended from the folk of Nogrod). Fili and Kili are Thorin’s nephews. They are the “young” ones (by some 50 years) of the group. They have yellow beards, and all the rest are said to look like “grandfathers”. (Obviously, they are changing that fact in the movies, presumably for the sake of some very questionable sex appeal.) Oin and Gloin are in charge of starting campfires. In The Lord of the Rings, Ori and Oin go with Balin to Moria. Ori wrote the relevant passages in The Book of Mazarbul because he was the last of the three to survive.

There are quite a few characters crucial to the Balin’s Tomb scene that aren’t included in the LEGO set.
