LEGO Star Wars 2023 Set Discussion - READ FIRST POST!!!
MaximillianRebo replied to MKJoshA's topic in LEGO Star Wars
The only way I could see Lego not including multiple named characters in the Yavin set is if it was releasing side by side with an Episode 4 Falcon, then you could put the main ANH crew in the Falcon and stock Yavin with more officers and tech crew, plus maybe the medal ceremony variants. As it currently stands though you've gotta look at it from the perspective of someone just getting into (or back into) Lego - rather than an AFOL who's been collecting for years - where it makes no sense to release a Yavin set minus several key characters and no way to easily obtain them. Maybe you could argue that the Trash Compactor fills that gap, but I don't see TLG pushing that sort of product synergy between dioramas and system scale sets. -
The appearance of the Pirate Snub Fighter in the Mandalorian and it's accompanying Lego set didn't turn out to be based on the R-41 Starchaser as some had hoped. This gave me enough motivation to finish off my own version of the ship, based here on its appearance in the video game Mysteries of the Sith (276 pieces in total). All I'm missing is a Mara Jade figure to pilot the ship ... Instructions can be downloaded here: https://rebrickable.com/mocs/MOC-149145/MaximillianBricks/r-41-starchaser/#details

Putting the Yavin set on the same page of the catalogue as the 4+ set does it no favours, especially with that tree. With the other trees that have been done in the botanical line and the Medieval Blacksmith there are much better official options out there; I guess end of the day it had to serve as a base for the lookout tower. No surprise the whole thing is done in the same style as Vader's Castle, hence why the Y-Wing looks the way it does. Will wait for more photos, especially from the back; hopefully the control room and throne room look decent (although there won't be much space at the top for much more than a dais for the medal ceremony). -

Given that this first wave of mechs is 2/3 identical to the first wave of the helmets (with the remaining one coming in wave 2), I wouldn't be surprised if they follow a similar trajectory. Even though there's no reason why they couldn't do mech pilots with uncovered faces, helmeted pilot/mech combos are probably much easier to work with. It would also give people who are wanting a figure to pair with their helmets an opportunity to do so, albeit a few years behind, and for a few dollars more (of course). -

How dare people consider spending some of their own money on a toy that others have shown disdain for? Maybe it's possible that these are nice simple sets (for sure overpriced, but where I am 20% off sales are common and I never feel the need to buy day one) that I could see myself throwing together after a long day at work. The Boba set looks great and while I didn't have any interest in the Stormtrooper set when it was announced the details on the build look interesting; as others have said it's almost something that could exist in-universe, and I'm a sucker for Mini-Rig style sets. Sure I could go Bricklink a Stormie for several dollars, but I'm honestly buying these for the builds, arm printing does not concern me. -

These don't look as bad as they could have. Yes they're completely non-canon and out of universe but for what they are there's a certain charm to them. The Boba one in particular looks great, especially the use of the various colours on his armour. The Stormtrooper one is growing on me and I might pick it up eventually. It's only the Vader one that doesn't hit, with the lack of cape definitely being a drawback. -

Have been watching some reviews of the UCS X-Wing (don't have it myself) and I think the issue with Artoo looking undersized in the ship is in part due to a matter of perception. The X-Wing is of course not mini-fig scale, but then again neither are regular astromechs. The problem is we perceive Artoo's 'correct' height as relative to a mini-fig when he's in fact much too tall. Artoo should come up to about Luke's waist but a Lego astromech is as tall as a mini-figs shoulders. When the X-Wing is scaled up we expect the droid when placed in the ship to be scaled up too, but this increase brings him closer to his actual scale relative to the ship (admittedly slightly undersized, but not by much). I wonder how a mini-doll would fare in this situation in comparison to an astromech height, and would it fit into the cockpit of the ship. -
Unpopular Opinions about LEGO

Like any software there's a learning curve. The search bar comes in handy a lot. I find myself typing terms like 'clip', 'bar', 'wedge', 'grille' a lot as it's much faster than trying to find the right piece in the 'Shapes' menu. One common piece that was tricky to locate at first was the 2x2 modified tile - the one with two studs on it that's regularly used in seats - is it a plate with less studs or a tile with more studs? One of the strengths of set design - Nice Part Usage (tm) - definitely makes digital design tricky as the point of NPU is using pieces for other than their intended design e.g. I found a MOC with a nice engine intake and was completely stumped where that piece might be found in stud.io until the designer pointed out that it's a wheel piece ... Like a lot of things Lego design and pieces are their own language, and like all languages it's one where new words are constantly being added. -

I doubt that will ever happen. Disney (not surprisingly) want as much control as possible over when information from one of their flagship IPs is revealed e.g. the internet breaking reveal of baby Yoda at the end of the Mando pilot episode. Yes merch is important to them - historically so in the case of Star Wars - but with these shows going back to the one episode a week format rather than dropping an entire season all at once, it seems they are back to chasing that water cooler moment and want to avoid spoilers as much as possible. It's also probable that the information given to Lego was true at the time it was disclosed, and changes were made much later in production - Mando concept art for example hints that a larger space battle in the final episode was planned but never eventuated on screen. Given Lego's speculated 12-18 month lead time on new sets, even if they were told about the changes it might not have happened until after they locked down their own design. -

Got it. I was looking on mobile and at first the guns looked like some of the third-party weapons like Firestar and thought Lego had produced their own, but it's just the 2L bar like you said on a lightsaber hilt. My bad. What you mentioned was the one I meant; I got the names mixed up. -

Box art for the new set, especially the back of the box, shows Concordia in the background. Is it possible the set is based on cut content from the episode where Mando and Bo fight of the Interceptors? Perhaps the sequence as shown to Lego involved more Mandalorian ships, and was later changed to be just the N1 and Gauntlet fighter. Either way I'll still be picking this one up, the TIE looks excellent and the Fang, while quite flat, looks decent. I don't recognise the weapon pieces beside the cockpit on the Fang, are they new? -

It hasn't been seen in shops here (as far as I know) but people have bought it already in the US for $100 USD. The upcoming Throne Room diorama is on Lego's website for $100 USD and $160 AUD so probably the Interceptor set will also be $160 AUD. -

Reviews are showing up for the May sets, and man that's a lot of light bley bricks and plates for everything except Endor. The build techniques in the Throne Room to achieve the window look excellent and I really like the new speeder bike design. The dark tan colour seems just right but maybe that's because my Kenner speeder bike is the same colour. I don't plan on getting either of the dioramas but might Bricklink the parts for a speeder bike when instructions become available. -

At that rate we should be getting anniversary waves 4 out of every 5 years, and we all know that's not the case. Even with the ESB anniversary, I feel that was mostly used as a way to launch the helmets line. Yes there was an AT-AT the same year; whether that was included before or after the anniversary branding was decided only the higher ups at TLG will know. -

Interceptor vs Fang Fighter looks pretty nice, but it's a pity the FF looks to have exactly the same colour scheme - grey and black - as the Interceptor. Some more colour or accents would have been great, but I guess that's more down to what appears in the show. Also Mando with the Darksaber and new helmet print for a set released next month is really going to eat into the Spider Droid sales in August... -

Personally I think the 4+ set looks great. Pricing aside, it's possible the best 4+ SW ever made as it actually hits the target market of people who may watch the show. Previous 4+ sets were all good but were based on media for a much higher age range. This set looks good, nice figs, good build and action features and is based on something 4+ kids will identify with. -

Unfortunately that's pretty much all YouTube channels that do Q&A style videos. The thumbnail will be a pic of a sought after character or a title like 'UCS Droid Escape Pod?' and everyone will click expecting some news or leaks but the video is just the creator speculating or whether the character or set is coming soon. Narrator: it isn't. -

I also feel it's another big bley build - I know that's how the source material looks but I feel there will be more interesting things later in the season. I have a feeling this will be another Trouble on Tatooine situation; everyone buys it for the darksaber and new Bo-Katan but the set itself isn't all that popular. How many Mando figs are/will be available now, is he the new Tatooine Luke? Also is it odd that it's up already on the Lego website, but the only photos are the one pic that everyone's seen and a 360 spin. No box artwork, no lifestyle shots, although admittedly the N-1 microfighter while having more pics at the moment also lacks anything more than renders of the set and figs. Maybe these will show up closer to the release date. -

Fantastic build - the overall shaping, the angles on the wings, the detailed and multi-level interior, all superb.

[MOC] Classic Space Nebulon-B Frigate
MaximillianRebo replied to Brickshipyard's topic in LEGO Star Wars
This is really excellent all round, not just the Medical Frigate but the X-Wing and TIE Fighter too. It's amazing how you've made it all happen with just the parts from two sets. I especially like how the Classic Space theme continues with the figs eg. Threepio's yellow torso and the orange torso for the X-Wing pilot (plus all the other characters).
