Following on from the aliens being added in, it wouldn't be too far fetched to start bridging the older space themes. With an alien invasion of some sort, the 'classic' space researchers are under threat. The space police can't keep up, and eventually secure the help of the Blacktron forces to help defend. This lets us have a greatest hits sort of space run. A classic style space supply/research base. A large Blacktron ship, several smaller Space Police ships. Alien/Bad Guy faction could give a nod back to various alien races already included in Lego's history.

I love the detail on the flamethrower arm. I could easily picture a squad of these patrolling through the ice.

I'm behind you 100% on this endeavour. If there's anything at all I can do to help get things off the ground, just say the word. :)

Unless we have dedicated volunteers step up to run each faction under Bob De Quatre's overarching control, I can see why Bob has chosen to take things closer to the SoNE format. A quick read over the various GoH faction forums shows that they each seem to have a dedicated team running the faction's overall direction. The faction leaders must then have a place to discuss bigger storylines/challenges that will include everyone. At the very least, it's worth trying. We can always discuss morphing and tweaking the best aspects of both SoNE and GoH and incorporate those as people see fit. At all times though, I would like to see some sort of 'tutorial challenge' or similar put in place to allow new players an easy starting ground to get into things with. I found with GoH that it can be very intimidating trying to find somewhere to fit in and start. I'm not exactly sure how that would work, whether it would be a mentor deal with other players, or a series of simple challenges to help get players into the feel of things, just something to keep it more inclusive. Lastly, i'm glad to see this topic getting some good discussion going again. While I do like the Star Wars universe, I don't love it enough to commit to SoNE. But i've been a Lego space fanatic since about 1984, so i'd love to see something more generic catering to the rest of us :)

I see what mccoyed is getting at with GoH. If we broadened the factions to a more style based breakdown, it might be more acceptable. For example, perhaps a steampunk themed faction, a bio-mechanical style faction, and something that uses a more conventional style of spacecraft (perhaps mech heavy)? Within each faction there is scope for variety and storylines within each faction and also linking the three across a broader universe.

Excalibur TNG: Mafia School Conclusion
vampyre78 replied to Bob's topic in LEGO Mafia and Role-Play Games
Well done jluckhaupt and Tohst. After being nearly the first person lynched on day one, it was great to see Adam survive to see the purists identified! Thanks Bob for a great game, and thanks to all the players too! Look forward to playing more of these in future.- 47 replies

Excalibur TNG: Mafia School Day Two
vampyre78 replied to Bob's topic in LEGO Mafia and Role-Play Games
From my own suspicions after day one's voting which I raised earlier, as well as the reasons Adam raises in post #102 I'm placing my vote for Greg. Emily and Melinda both voted for Greg on day one and ended up dead, and looking back I don't think I paid enough attention to Emily's strong defence of Adam. We need to stand together, and vote together, for the Academy to survive. Vote: Greg Kennedy (Lego Spy)- 144 replies

Excalibur TNG: Mafia School Day Two
vampyre78 replied to Bob's topic in LEGO Mafia and Role-Play Games
I'm not sure that i've done anything to warrant so much suspicion on myself, other than trying to find patterns to the day one voting today. By the time I placed my vote for Adam, I was actually still very suspicious (turned out groundless) of Emily and couldn't see her reasons for voting for Greg. I've said before it didn't seem like there was much reason for anyone to vote for Melinda other than perhaps she was too vocal with her suspicions. Emily managed to convince most of us that Adam was town, except for Timothy, Jordan and myself. As Melinda had already been called out for changing votes, I was even less inclined to change my vote after that point. There really isn't anything solid that can be drawn from day one. While there are some suspicious patterns around the voting, there are too many variables (Isaac's motivations for one) to call. We ended the day with three people who were reasonably seriously accused of being scum, and 2 out of those 3 are innocent and dead. Theoretical question -- What if the sudden bandwagon on Melinda was only formed to save Adam? Given that scum can communicate with each other, it would be a sensible strategy to try if things weren't going their way. The more I try to look into reasons and suspicions, the more confused i'm getting! Oops, slight correction. There were four people accused of being scum, Fred had named myself as well. Of those, Adam and I remain. Jeff and Fred, although you have both suspected me today, based purely off your voting alone, neither of you are colluding with anyone. Unless your votes were part of an elaborate scum cover, but that wouldn't account for the bloodbath we had last night. I'm more inclined to believe both your opinions.- 144 replies

Excalibur TNG: Mafia School Day Two
vampyre78 replied to Bob's topic in LEGO Mafia and Role-Play Games
This is actually the best new information that's come to light today, and does make sense. I've been trying to figure out how we lost two last night and Emily being a vigilante gives the simplest explanation. If that's the case, we now know that her target was wrong.- 144 replies

Excalibur TNG: Mafia School Day Two

The only thing that keeps bugging me so far is that there was no real evidence or reason given for the initial votes on Melinda. These votes pulled the attention away from Adam or anyone else and also quickly piled on. Neither Willie or Greg gave much reason for voting Melinda. If Isaac hadn't flipped to follow Greg's vote, then Adam and Melinda would've been tied. What happens in a tie vote? I've already said before that I voted for Adam initially due to the fact he was the only one with anything remotely suspicious about him at the time. I didn't change my vote to Melinda as I couldn't see any real reason for it. The only thing I can see Melinda doing 'wrong' is that she accepted Emily's reasons and voted for Greg. This addictively annoying game called IRL: Work Edition keeps stealing all my time!!- 144 replies

Excalibur TNG: Mafia School Day Two
vampyre78 replied to Bob's topic in LEGO Mafia and Role-Play Games
Since the only motivation that can be confirmed by any of us is our own, i've had another look at the voting list from day one. This is just what I have observed so far... Isaac we know was a loyal student. Initially he jumped on the bandwagon for Adam (as did I), but then he was swayed to vote for Melinda later on. This left three votes on Adam, and I know that even after the bandwagon started on Melinda, I wasn't convinced there was anything solid behind it and didn't change my vote. I can't comment on Timothy and Jordan's motivations. The next oddity on the list becomes Melinda's votes. Knowing that Isaac was loyal, this leaves Adam, Greg and Willie who voted for Melinda, enough to get her lynched. All the rest of the votes (Jeff, Fred and Warren) were in no way co-ordinated with the rest.- 144 replies

Excalibur TNG: Mafia School Day Two

What a terrible 24 hours! First the Admiral, then poor Melinda, and now Isaac and Emily!! It's very hard to find a pattern between the three poor souls we have lost. Melinda and Emily were both very vocal in day one and accused a number of players between them before voting closed. The only pattern they left us is that they both voted for Greg. The only real evidence Isaac left behind relates to the confusion over Emily accusing Jordan, where he had become suspicious over the editing of the quotes. Not really much for us to work with. I think the med students need to pass out super strength no doze to everyone tonight!- 144 replies

With the day fast drawing to a close, I fear we cannot rely on the Academy's security forces to solve this. They only seem interested in guarding the Admiral's body and making sure it stays here in the room with us. We really need to start gathering together some solid information though, and fast. We owe it to the Admiral, and we need to restore order and pride in the Academy.- 215 replies

It appears I need to stop studying and sleeping! Blink for a second and the accusations have gone wild. Fred, without a lot of evidence to go on, I admit that I have probably gone a little too quiet watching the current debates going on, and not making enough observations myself. My vote for Adam stands based on what little we have to go on. I didn't mean to call out Emily, but I was very curious to see her thoughts given the accusations involving her earlier, she made some very solid arguments against others very early. I think the Admiral's death has shaken us all more than we'd like to believe, it's been a chaotic day with very little information to work with.- 215 replies

Warren - I think what Jeff is driving at is that we're supposed to vote with the format Vote Jeff (getdamonkey) Oh and Unvote Jeff (getdamonkey), it was only an example. For what it's worth, there's been a few of our fellow students who seem to have been far too quiet after this shocking murder. I really do have to get back to my studies for now though, my Father will be most upset if I fall behind in any of my studies.- 215 replies

Uh-oh, someone let my creativity loose... Use an existing, made up, or even blank star map, and grid it off. Grey out most of the tiles except for starting areas for the main factions, giving them each a few planets to start things. The rest is considered to be not settled yet. If we make the grid area large enough, anyone will be able to come along and pick a grid and colonise their planet. If a whole planet/race seems hard, players can choose one of the main factions and begin building facilities or fleets. Main storylines could follow expansion into unknown territory (unleashing unknown new forces etc), galactic and civil wars between the factions, pursuit of rare resources/artifacts. And on and on...Lots of opportunities for big and small build competitions. I'm sure there's already plenty of Sci-Fi builders out there with custom fleets of their own built and waiting. This gives everyone an excuse to flesh out their MOCs with some extra background story. Sorry for going a bit mad!
-
Some quick ideas for four main factions. Legate Empire of Great Order -- The Space police and any military force that aligns itself to the same principles, bonus acronym (L.E.G.O.) ;) Space Exploration Group -- Incorporating competing privateer research groups consisting of classic space and the futuron range. The Rebels -- (Needs a better name) -- Blacktron and any associated criminal factions. Anything with the specific focus of wiping out either the Legate or the explorers. Aliens -- Any alien, robotic or living planet that doesn't fall into the above. May be good, evil or neutral. :)
-
Given that the space themes from Lego already have factions built in, this should be a given! The explorers, the criminals, space police, aliens... With the recent spike in interest over the classic space theme, this would be the perfect time to start things off. People can create roving fleets, or MOC planetary colonies etc. There's as many possibilities, if not more, than the GoH has!
