Review: 10128 Train Level Crossing
WesternOutlaw replied to WesternOutlaw's topic in LEGO Train Tech
Am I mistaken? I thought the caboose clears the bridge? I'm going to have to break it out and check. It sound like you remember the crash well. -
All aboard! Train fans hop aboard their Emerald Night, Super Chief, BNSF, Swiss Crocodile, or any other Lego train. We're heading to a most exciting place for railroaders, the World City Train Level Crossing (Set #10128). This beauty of a train crossing came out as part of the "World City" town collection when trains were in and town was out (or at least the towns we all knew and loved). Train Level Crossing Set #: 10128 Theme: Trains / World City Year Released: 2003 Piece Count: 325 Minifigs: 2 Track: 3 (9V straight) List Price: $50 (USD) The first view of the box immediately catches train fans' eyes with the bright red signal tower and crossing gates: While the backside of the box provides no alternate models, some nice imagery is included: The instruction book provides the same image as that of the box: Page 45 of the instructions shows an image of the completed set: While the set does have some wonderful printed pieces, it also includes a sticker sheet for the signs: Hey look! It's Conductor Charlie with Bennie from Mystery Ship? (oops... flashback!... splashes water on face to concentrate on set review) Wow! How about seven tools included within this set? Not many sets have this many accessories (and none attached to a plastic wheel): This set only includes the latest technology in train signalling. These are all printed pieces (no stickers). I love the computer: What if any of these gadgets break down or the train stalls at the crossing? Never fear, a track and road repair vehicle provides a quick fix. This great little maintenance vehicle has wheels for road plates, and adjustable train wheels for trackside travel. It's even 4-studs wide with classic town doors! A wonderful crossing makes sure tabletown travel is safe for the citizens of Train Town: The crossing beams/arms can be lifted with a small lever at the right side: They rest in a component at the other end: NOTE: I never put the stickers on the crossing signs. Let's have a look at the great crossing tower: Train figs can go inside the 1st floor or up the stairs to the 2nd floor: The 2nd floor has a door and a very nice modern roof. The time 10:21 is prominently displayed on the digital clock: Inside the 1st floor is an adjustable screen computer: And on the 2nd floor, the main switching system. Isn't that a great printed brick? A stepped bridge with four sets of stairs provides a safe walk over any train (including the new Emerald Night). In fact, all of my trains have safely made it under this bridge including the My Own Train Caboose that is probably one of the more taller of rolling stock. The clearance along the side of the track is 4-stud wides on each side allowing a wide train to pass through: Here is the complete set: And a shot of the new Emerald Express Night passenger car running through: Lastly, an image of this fantastic set in Train Town: Summary Train Level Crossing is a wonderful set for train fans. The color is an excellent choice and compliments the Train Engine Shed (set #10027) nicely. The yellow maintenance vehicle adds a high level of fun and playability to the set. I like the added details like the computer and switching brick that are great pieces for any town fan. My only complaint is the use of stickers for the crossing signs. This is one set that I'd highly recommend for any Train Town. Those participating in Murder on the Emerald Express may even see it again soon.

Murder on the Emerald Express: Characters
WesternOutlaw replied to WesternOutlaw's topic in LEGO Mafia and Role-Play Games
Congratulations to the following 12 individiuals who have received a ticket aboard the luxurious Emerald Express. These individuals will be participating in the Murder Mystery: Alice Batbrick Captain Zuloo Darth Legois Dragonator Hinckley I Scream Clone ImperialShadows JimButcher Sandy Svelte_Corps WhiteFang Character descriptions will be provided soon. I look forward to seeing you on board. NOTE: For those of you not selected; unless one of the individuals above would like to give you their ticket (by personal choice), you will not be participating in the mystery. Should these individuals choose to sell their ticket on Ebay or other auction, I know nothing. I will; however, keep an "Extras List" if any of you want to be on it. You may be called for a small part and/or participation should it be needed. -
Interesting thoughts. I intentially left "BOTH" off as a choice, because many City/Town fans do think of them as one theme. This poll requires a hard decision.
-
Here at Eurobricks, Trains & Town fans get the best of both worlds with great topics, MOCs, and set reviews of both Trains and Town. But if you had your choice, which theme do you really prefer? Do you enjoy the action of controlling a Lego Train quickly along your railway? (or) Do you prefer the more peaceful aspects of a stationary town in which you roll the vehicles along the streets? Choose between your favorite theme in this Eurobricks Trains & Town Poll.

I'm not exactly 20 anymore, but watch it! There's a lot of adult collectors of Playmobil just as well as Lego who create custom Playmobil MOCs. Some Playmobil collectors create Western Mysteries and even use Playmobil for Garden Wargaming. Their trains are equally fun! I'm a big fan of old Western Playmobil and have spent considerable amounts of money on Ebay to buy older sets. Playmobil isn't a "construction toy" like Lego, but it's fun as well.

Nice review Mikey. I've added a poll to this review, and it's been added to our Trains & Town Review Index. Thanks for sharing! Part of me misses the old Classic Town 4-stud wide tow trucks, but this is still a nice set.

Although some discussion has taken place in the fantastic review of the 10194 Emerald Night with pictures from both Captain Zuloo and Holodoc, as well as discussion in the Emerald Night thread, I thought it was important enough to create a new thread re. a fix to the wheel locking issue. EB member and Lego Ambassador Mark Bellis has mentioned this problem and the correction HERE. For whatever reason, his response didn't sink in until trying it today - thanks Mark. I spoke with a Lego SAH Customer Service Rep today re. this issue with the train: SCENERIO I am running my Emerald Night with passenger car on 9V track (with no electric power) in a medium sized oval (18 straight track + 16 curves). My layout contains no flexi-track or elevated track. I am using the new Power Function system. PROBLEM My Emerald Night was running rather "choppy", esp. around curves, and when placing the train in reverse, the train would sputter, stop, and lock when it came to a curve. How disappointing and frustrating after a few rebuilds of the wheels. I thought the issue was the pistons and/or the technic beams sticking out of the wheels. SOLUTION Within the first book of instructions, on page 51, is step 49. This is a CRITICAL step in making sure your Emerald Night runs smoothly. Notice the separate picture of the two wheels in the red square. One side of the wheels have to be placed in the 3:00 position whereas the other side needs to be set to the 12:00 position. I missed this step completely trying to line up both sets of wheels at the 12:00 positions. Also note: the middle wheels need to have the smooth/flat side out. RESOLUTION After correcting this issue, my Emerald Night runs much smoother and faster around curves and can go in reverse without locking or stopping, even along curves. Mark: you tried to tell me this, and I missed it just like in the instructions. I think this may help those of you with the same problem. Good luck with running your Emerald Nights! Murder on the Emerald Express: Characters
WesternOutlaw replied to WesternOutlaw's topic in LEGO Mafia and Role-Play Games
Piqued your interest for an intriguing train mystery? The ominous Emerld Night will be leaving the station in the near future. Consider this "teaser" a post to express your interest in attending a Murder. Those interested will have to "try out" for this little mystery through private invitation before receiving their ticket. I look forward to seeing you on board (or not)... :skull: -
Great review Svelte! I love these airplane promotional sets. I just wish Lego had them in stores. I was really thinking this was a regular (non-promotional set) when I first saw it. I guess not. Your review is fantastic. Great pictures, of even the build! - very nice. I also like the scene Bonaparte mentioned. Very funny.

Pros and Cons of the various types of trains.
WesternOutlaw replied to Madcat2000's topic in LEGO Train Tech
Interesting topic Madcat. I have the Emerald Night, but I still like 9V. The big "pro" is ease at adding a 9V motor to any train (quick and easy). As you mention, 9V was a long-time system, so compatibility is also a big plus. I'm interested to see what others say. NOTE: You'll notice a little "Train Tech" logo above, which means this topic has been added to Train Tech. -
We try to keep pinned threads down to a minimum. You can find Train Tech, and other Trains & Town Indicies in the T&T Main Forum.

Great job Coop! This is really nice. When I first looked at it, I thought, this is the Emerald Night. Then I realized that it has the 4 large train wheels on each side. You did a fantastic job in adding the additional wheel set keeping the same look and design of the actual set. Your MOC has been added to Eurobricks' new train resource, TRAIN TECH. Sweet!

There's a new train resource on Eurobricks! What is it? you ask. It's TRAIN TECH! What is Train Tech, you ask? Train Tech is your #1 comprehensive resource for train topics. Although this is a new train stop for Lego Train fans and it's in its infancy stage, with all the new chatter about the Emerald Night and revitalization of Lego Train interest, this index will bring you the latest topics re. trains, tracks, and power systems. Reviews and MOCs will also be divided and linked for easy reference and searches. Do you have some ideas to make Train Tech better? share them here; and/or share your thought regarding Train Tech. NOTE: TRAIN TECH has been pinned in the main Trains & Town forum.

In fact, it's a town built around the Emerald Night I really prefer the look of the green baseplates over the older grey or newer bley. The only problem is that the road section is wider with only six studs on the sides. Doesn't give you much building space. The advantage is they work for wider vehicles. Yes, you're absolutely right SC. I built the World City station because it's my only one, but I just ordered the new one this evening. It's a really nice set, but I didn't know it came with newer bley bricks though? Good point about the farm. I have moved the two components (silo & barn) together, and it looks much better. The tan bricks for the farm house were used to build the Indiana Jones/Desert Adventure Hideout, then used again for Grimwell Manor. Thanks for the feedback everyone. I added the Train Engine Shed Sunday and have the new station on order. Can't wait to make some changes again. These WIP creations are fun! In the picture, the town looks so small, but in fact, I've placed two large boards on my regular table making it much larger. The images mask the true size of the creation. More to come, perhaps even a Train Mystery... :skull:

Great entry Svelte! I love the name alone. When I first saw the name, I thought it was going to be the old Chocomel building. You've really created a nice MOC here. Great use of the Farm solo pieces. Lots of fine details bringing back my memories of the first Charlie Choco Factory.

Wow! This is spectacular. I love the colors and the charm. This is better than Lego's modular sets. Excellent masterpiece!
-
Mine too. I discovered that elevation/climb makes this worse, even forward. If I reverse the train around curves, the engine sputters and locks. I'm wondering if I may have not built it correctly. Everythings seems to be according to the instructions. Any thoughts as to what is causing the problem?

I've been busy since last night, building the beautiful Emerald Night, and breaking out some train sets for a town to host the new set. Well, this one is a mix of Classic, World City, and Farm with lots of green representing more of a small country town (with the exception of the World City Train station that's got a more modern look. I'll share a few more pictures, but here's the town. I still need to build the Train Engine Shed, but this didn't come out too bad: NOTE: Building around track is tricky. Here's a shot of the "older" down town area:
-
For those of you who have this running on their tracks (Cap'n Z/Holodoc, others): how is your train maneuving along turns, and how about reverse? I find that it's somewhat awkward around turns, esp. at higher speeds, and reversing the engine, it sometimes sputters, or gets locked and stops. I'm sure I built it correctly, but not too impressed with its maneuverability. Aside from turning on the track, it's a beautiful engine.

I would recommend creating a Flickr or Brickshelf account. There's also some great tutorials for new members HERE, including one re. deeplinking images. There's no specific profile field for name, but you can add to your signature or other profile fields if you want to share.
