I did not measured exactly but i guess approximately reach 0.5mm and maybe little bit less...
You completely right, because there are so many obstacle;
-first of all the lego set made of plastic, and plastic is flexible. therefore absorb some energy and movement.
-gears in original set are not suitable for this purpose. If use a specific gears then would be more sensitive.
-also large motors are not sensitive enough.
even so there is a way to overcome to all difficulties, you can change the speed and angle when you arrived end of the object, and start again to backward. thus, you can get a solution for huge interval distance problem. of course you must sort your files before stacking process
