I totally get TLG wanting to still sell this "flagship" set but needing to bookend the 8 year old minifigures that no longer match up with their newer sets and current branding. It's like a very popular car model on the lot that's still being sold with a cassette deck.
So they retire the set, Make a few minor updates + a mini-fig facelift to match the times and represent the current brand. Then sell it again thousands of times over. I own the old, probably getting the new.
