LEGO Architecture "World's Tallest" Custom Series
Doctor Octoroc replied to Doctor Octoroc's topic in Special LEGO Themes
Here's the Colosseum! This was a fun build. Trying to keep it to the right height at this scale and also provide proper contact between layers of hinge plates and consistent texture around was a challenge and while I would have liked to have a more cohesive series of slopes between the outer and inner "circles", it turned out pretty good. It has a solid inner ring and a nicely textured and varied outer ring to represent the ruinous state of the structure. -

Sure! Once I'm done with the Colosseum :-) -

Haha, that would be spectacular! By request, the Eiffel Tower! This is a similar build to the official LEGO set only at a much smaller scale - but the mechanics of the build are the same, using tiles with clips to construct the legs. The top half is much simpler, however, as at this scale there isn't much of a choice but to make it solid. It's not quite as elegant as the actual structure but I think it turned out great for the scale. -

Okay, maybe one or two more small ones...couldn't resist such a simple, quick and clean build! -

Thank you kindly! Building at this scale has certainly challenged me to use a lot of different methods I've never even thought of before. Here's another smaller model before I get back to skyscrapers - had a lot of fun with this one. -

By request, the Home Insurance Building in Chicago, IL United States. I used grill tiles between plates to create the windows. It would be great if there were 1x1 grill plates so I could have done windows on all four sides but it is what it is! -

Another one for the smaller series - the Taj Mahal. It's not quite as detailed as I would have liked but without sacrificing the proper angles on the four corners of the main building, there isn't much room to add details into the faces. The dome is oddly formed as well but I think it works better than a simple dome brick. -

I'll take a look! At first I was going in order from tallest to shortest and throwing in some notable shorter structures, at this point it's a bit more random. I'll think "I wonder what the Tower of Pisa would be like at this scale" then just give it a shot. Then there's the whole US 50 mini-series with the tallest building in each state - got about 15 of them done then decided to check out the historical timeline on the Skyscraper Page to see what fun classic structures could work. In comparison, many of them are super tiny - hence the Leaning Tower of Pisa is basically just a stack of seven 1x1 round plates with a bar through them. I have put the Eiffel Tower in my reference diagram so I'll definitely be giving that one a go in the near future. -

I've been working on some smaller, yet notable, structures recently. First up is the very tiny Leaning Tower of Pisa. This one is so simple as it only contains 19 pieces but finding the right combination of hinge elements was key in getting the lean while keeping a three-plate high base like the rest of the series. -

I'll add them to the list! So many suggestions recently, thank you all! And one more finished - the CTF (Chow Tai Fook) Finance Centre in Guangzhou, China. This one was just recently finished as it suddenly popped up on the Skyscraper Page database this week! -

Actually, now that I think about it - some of the other monuments would be pretty interesting at this scale. I did the Philadelphia Art Museum at a similar scale and that's similar to the DC architecture so it would be a similar build. I'll look into doing the Capitol or the White House at this scale and see how it turns out. The skyscrapers are becoming redundant and progressively more difficult at shorter heights now that I've gotten all the mega talls and most of the super talls out of the way... -

I'd be willing to give it a shot - although at this particular scale it will probably just be a stack of 1x1 bricks with a cone on top haha. -

Thank you! Yeah, I was fortunate enough to work with the writers over at College Humor on a series of ten shorts in their "TV RPG" series. The Game of Thrones one is by far the most popular one Breaking Bad was definitely one of the most fun to work on. not everyone can say they had to binge watch a series as part of their research for a job haha. Also, another one done - Deji Plaza in Nanjing, China. -

Another very clean build - I love it when the LEGO units and scale coincide this nicely! -

That looks like a fun one! Definitely isn't too short for the project, I've already done a number of buildings under 300 meters. Consider it on the list! -

They definitely bear a resemblance but at this scale they'd probably end up looking exactly the same haha. -

Thanks! The next few in the "US 50" series aren't very exciting, I might jump down to something lower on the list first to keep it more interesting... And on that note, I jumped back over to the world's tallest to bring you all another NYC classic, 4 Times Square! I love thinking about all the possibilities for the four screens on top! I just used standard 1x1 tiles for the time being. -

Yeah, I've been unable to find a way to properly render and put together instructions for the Burj Al Arab since it uses flex hoses which aren't easy to work with in any of the digital builders. But also, the build is very similar to another one I've come across - it's one thing to make minor improvements to an official model but putting out a model this similar to another AFOL's model seems questionable so I'm holding off until I can both figure out the flex hose issue and come up with a more original build. Also, another of the "US 50" done - Chase Tower in Indianapolis, IN! Another simple build. The further down in height I go with this mini-series, the simpler the builds tend to be. The Devon Energy Tower was an exception but thus far a lot of the tallest buildings in each state tend to be a similar style that all yield near identical builds with variations in the placement of side tiles and colors used. -

They're all in 'perfect' scale with each other - within reason, of course. Each LEGO plate height is equal to 25 feet on the actual building so some structures that are within 25 feet of each other are the same size, or depending on how they're constructed, the comparisons aren't all perfect - but very close. Here's a screen shot of them all lined up in LEGO Digital Designer: EDIT: Had to delete this photo as it's no longer in in the photo album. Obviously, you can't see the details on any given one but it'll give a good idea of how I keep them all within a reasonable scale of each other. -

New addition to the "US 50" mini-series, Devon Energy Tower in Oklahoma City. -

This one is pretty simple but with a lack of bright blue pieces and 1x1's rounded on only one side (one day, LEGO...one day...), I was forced to use 1x3 plates to keep the three main columns that make up the form together. It's not an ideal construction but the result of such a small scale for this particular shape of building. -

Thanks! I had two previous iterations which used 3x3 towers instead of 2x2 and it just looked a bit squat. It's a bit too thin but you can only do so much when each 1x1 unit is equal to about 35 feet! -

Another TV tower, another simple build with less than 50 pieces! These are nice spacers between the more complicated builds. -
